So I only need to be concerned about the sunlight requirements in the latter part of its cycle! Awesome to know as that gives me a better idea where to put it. May I suggest a Garden Quickie on crop rotation, is it necessary, when to or not to, why we have to....so we can consider this over the long winter months planning out our spring gear up?

Exactly sandy. Locations that are in complete shade in fall and winter and would seem terrible for garlic can actually be a great spot, provided the sun gets there by spring!

Last year was my first year of planting garlic. I harvested in July this year. It was an ok outcome. I'll put them in a different spot this year using your suggestions. Maybe it will be a FANTASTIC harvest next year! Thanks! ❤️

I'm a 1st time gardener. I got a Greenstalk to plant my garlic in. I already received some garlic Baker's Creek and have it in the fridge. I'm in 10A, so I won't plant until Nov or Dec, I think. I'm still learning and trying to figure this out. Thanks for all your help!

In the video, it looked as if the garlic in ground was planted more closely together than the garlic in bags. Is there a reason for that or was it simply a fluke? Meaning, can you plant in bags as densely as in ground?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Yup, its always the same spacing...4" (10cm) apart minimum, up to about 6" (15cm)

i plant my garlic in dirt... lol. all kidding aside, i probably wont get anything out of them because i didnt know they had to be planted in the fall. i have seed garlic ordered for this fall.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Ha ha yes, dirt is good!! As for the fall, yes, that it when hardneck needs to be planted as it needs a winter chilling. Softneck varieties however can be planted in the spring in warmer climates.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms oh ty for that; no one ever differentiated before. it was probably hardneck. i have both hard and softneck ordered. should i save the softneck for spring or will planting it in the fall give it a head start. i'm in nc zone 7b. all my food is planted in pots and will overwinter above ground.

so how do you know if your soil is good for garlic planting and maintaining good drainage?
@rosemaryus-ct6151
@rosemaryus-ct6151 Жыл бұрын
my two cents: if ur not sure about the drainage u can put in a raised bed. no matter how high or low it is, if it is above grade it's going to drain better. and if the dirt is the devil to dig in it's probably clay; u would need to amend it with something better like compost, sand, perlite, etc. well, those things never hurt either lol. if u fertilize regularly that always helps too. another giveaway is to put ur soil in a pot and water it down. come back when it's dry. water it. the longer it takes to drain the more clay is in ur dirt. i've seen water sit on top for a couple of hours; yeah that was clay lol... i cut the dirt by half with compost i made every year. eventually i had great dirt with great drainage.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Well with drainage, you can usually just look and see the soil during the wettest months. Soil that doesn't drain well will be wet and soggy and possibly have standing water. Soil that does drain well will not. Really, a visual test is all you need.

I did mine in grow bags last year and they were ment to be elephant garlic and they the size of a baby turnip! Not enough water WTH 🤦‍♀️ This year I have 4 different types and I was thinking of putting them in raised beds- only palette collars not high beds What do you think? Beds or bags and water better?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
The beds will likely produce more uniform, larger bulbs as the buffering for extreme temps and moisture changes will be greater.....I just really like the versatility of grow bags.
