I have family and friends who regularly need my hot sauce, flakes and chili powder, so I'm doing more to see if it's enough. Your videos are a weekly date for me - interesting, practical and easy to understand - thanks!. I am trying shredded leaves to mulch my garlic this year. Last year they blew away after 3 days😢. This year I have covered the leaf layer with a single thin card layer (Leaves haven’t blown away...yet). Is this an OK approach please??
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha awesome, thanks Graham! Yeah, dried leaves are definitely hard to keep down, especially when every 2nd day is a wind storm this time of year! I've had success with really chopping up the leaves fine first, or, as you've done, put a heavier layer of another mulch on top. Should be ok.

Would wood chips / landscaping bark be a bit too heavy for them?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Wood shavings can work... I'd say the bark nuggets and chips are probably not the best way to go.

This is my first time planting garlic. I bought a dozen hard neck and soft necks at the farmers market late in the year, and planted them ground (not raised), but I only had wood chips around at that time. They virtually stayed covered in snow during this winter. The weather has started warming up, and I have noticed little leaves poking up thru the wood chips. I removed the wood chips, picked weeds (almost none), added fertilizer (2/1/1) and watered. Then I covered them with partially composted straw. From the worm bin. They seem to be thriving, but it’s only been a couple of weeks. Any suggestions for the rest of the spring?

My garlic was planted in a fabric container in October and has green shoots. Is that normal? Also, I mulched with shredded coconut husk. Should I cover them at night since temps are in the low 20s? I’m in zone 7
@TheRipeTomatoFarms4 жыл бұрын
Totally normal. Often they will sprout up with shoots before the winter frost. No big deal, but we're after roots more than shoots at this point. Garlic is super hardy, don't worry about those temps. If they are planted at least an inch deep and have 2 inches of compost, you're golden. Don't worry about the green shoots that came up, if they die off, no big deal really. Cheers!

Easy remedy. They are too warm and need more light. Your indoor Garlic is in full growing mode. It can't be treated like the dormant stuff outdoors. Its fully growing and needs supplemental light, good water, and maybe even nutrients, depending on what your soil is like. :-)
