My fiancée and I are getting married in a week and do a lot of indoor gardening. Our goal is to be growing all of the herbs we cook with by the end of the year, the basil was what I started us with. Mostly my idea but she looovvveess harvesting basil and I'm glad for her involvement in my favorite hobby/future career.

I love fresh basil I never knew until this year.! I went on with rosemary plants and oregano, oregano died totally my fault. The Rosemary on anyting is pretty good potatoes for some reason being the best. Herbs can add a lot of depth that my forty-year-old ass never realized. Easy to grow and doesn't take up any room comparatively.

Haha, perfect timing as always, Jeff. I've got a bunch of basil plants growing in solo cups in my garden window. They're all 8"-10" tall, very bushy, ready to snip & make a big batch of pesto or new plants. I took a few to my coworkers & told them what to do for endless basil, gave them a little course in growing/propagating herbs, and they're totally psyched. 😊

Grew sweet basil for the first time this year. They only took two days to sprout and due to my error, they took a month to start growing their second set of true leaves. Finally corrected my mistake and boy did they take off. Now they are on their second round of flowers while I have the first dozen flowers drying for seed harvesting. Bees have been loving their flowers.... while the caterpillars and snails have been loving the leaves but I have so much basil that they aren't harming my plants. All the caterpillars have disappeared though but the basil has been remaining strong. The 100°F temps haven't really affected them so long as I keep their soil moist. Will plant them against next year that's for sure. Surprised me with how resilient and hardy they are.

In one month it's almost 2 feet. Its in a big pot. It's very happy. My basil will be growing indoors and cuttings in glass. Now i know what to do. As well as in my pasta dishes. The video is beautiful and educational. In the video you are showing the watering from the bottom when planting from the seeds. I would like to ask how long you can water it this way? In my case, I planted the basil from the seed and I'm watering it from the bottom - putting some amount of water in the dish and the pots with basil in it. After few weeks I repotted it in a bigger pot and I'm still using the same method of watering - from the bottom. But I noticed that the stem is becoming week and unstable with brown color at the lower part of it. I assume it is from overwatering. What is the time I normally should stop watering it that way? Thanks ;)

Hi, thanks for the video! Just wondering, when pruning the plant, that creates two extra stems that grow out, and on top of that extra stem is another one of those nodes that can be pruned. How does one keep the basil from getting taller and taller since at every prune, the stem segment increases by one? Thanks!
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Жыл бұрын
Actually, if you don't prune, the plant will get super tall and skinny. By pruning, yes new nodes come out, but they are easy shorter and they double in number. Pruning is the ONLY way to prevent the basil plants from becoming taller and taller! :-)

1000% you can. The Basil in this video was FROM the supermarket! If you are talking about the already-cut stuff.....be aware, that once cut, the Basil needs to go into water right away. The stems at the store have likely been cut for too long...but its worth a try!

One question I have is when could you have potted those cuttings? You waited until day 26, with huge roots, but at day 6 you had small roots, which i wonder if you could have planted it then and it would have been fine? It did seem that the roots were a little small , but I think they might make it, I'm not sure. It would probably be best to wait a little longer. 26 days seemed too long. Those were some huge roots.

@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason, thanks! I replant them into their larger pots when their roots have filled the current container. Some people go by leaves....say 4-5 nodes of true leaf sets....but roots tell the story. By constantly topping the leader shoots off, you are delaying flowering the whole time. That's the best way to do it, rather than waiting for the early signs of a flower stalk and quickly cutting it off....by then its too late and the plant is dead set on flowering mode usually.

I think you just hit on what I'm doing wrong. Wet feet. I bought some basil from the produce market, plunked it into water and it grew three plants with good root systems which we transplanted. All was well. It was so good we have tried two more times. UGH. Everything turned brown and died. It is possible that I need to trim those bottom leaves and THEN put it in water. I'll give that a try and see if things improve. Thanks.

Hey Jason...it basically re-sets the plants....so almost as long. Sometimes they flower a bit earlier, but I wonder if that's more of a seasonal change because you're taking a cutting later on, rather than the plant being inherently older.

You keep cutting the leaders to PREVENT the flowering, thus prolonging the life and harvest of the plant. Eventually they just say to heck with it and flower/die....but that's when you take cuttings and start a new plant, repeating the cycle.

I've noticed a HUGE difference, in "success rate" with making sure the dirt/soil, I'm planning on planting INTO- ..IS soaked & wet, FIRST! I have also noticed, there's a BIG diff when it comes to keeping a SMIDGE of water, on the bottom of the dish/water catcher (dishes for house plants to not drain/leak all over your floors..) ..as far as, "making SURE they 'take' to their 'new dirt home'." If I leave them, (just as watered down, when I first pot them up..) ..and they end up drying out- ...then, "THAT'S it" for the plant! Literally, regardless of what I've tried, NONE- will "come back", after that drying out / "lack of care", "phase". So, now.. I just "MAKE sure" that the bottom tray, (ONLY for the 1st week & ONLY about ¼ inch from the bottom up) ..to ENSURE, their survival & success is easier- on "them". ** A FAN, is also blowing on my porch, at all times while they've still got, "wet feet". My Creator, what a difference following this SAME, ("make sure the soil/dirt is wet- BEFORE transplanting"- strategy) has made! There was a, "Canadian Garden Vlogger", who- also mentioned this, a year or so ago- and tbh, it COMPLETELY made sense. I mean, you ARE going from water to dirt. As, we- 'humans', go from Hot-BURN-your-skin-off, 'summer' into 'fall'- WE, "HAVE TO"- "adjust / adapt".. So, it *SHOULD be*- "common sense", that- "Plants need to adjust, to different environments, too."
