You made such great points here my friend! Not that I’m a long time gardener(just 6 years now) but I’m 100% for the mulching being an absolute must. I hardly weed anymore since my 3rd year of gardening when wiser folks than I told me first,what is mulch,and then second ...always do it! So grateful for that wisdom! One other thing I’d mention for new gardeners is to just start small. Find a few plants you enjoy and give it a go! No need to overwhelm yourself and get discouraged just because you bit off more than you can chew in the early days of your gardening adventure. 😉🙂

Totally right. Start small, even in containers. Get a feel for it. What is moist soil vs what is wet soil. Get familiar with the life cycle of a purely vegetative plant (lettuce) vs a crop where you need blooms (tomatoes and peppers). So smart Derek! Cheers!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms hehe yeah; what’s ironic is that my region isn’t prepared for such rare snowstorms like this and as a result, we have no plow trucks, salt trucks, or procedures for dealing with crises like this. Basically we are stuck until the ice on the road melts and power and water access is back. Also many schools have shut down for at least the next week, which is also ironic since the widespread power outages made the backup remote learning technology via internet obsolete

Greetings Jeff, question regarding weeds, I recently moved and my backyard has bugs so I’m utilizing the yard by sections clearing areas out little by little. The weed Is cut then utilized for mulching wouldn’t I be transferring the bugs? How should I manage this situation? Thank you in advance for your answer(s). Bye, God’s Blessings!

Question for you. Do you get a ton of weeds using fresh grass cutting to mulch? It scares me to mulch with grass. I have never mulched my in ground garden & have had success without it. This year I want to try as I am putting in raised beds and drip irrigation. But worried about excessive gras weeds. Thanks for help & great video.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kittie, I've never had the grass sprout after cutting and using it for a mulch. For sure there could be weed seeds in any grass. However, I am ALWAYS mulching. My beds are continuously getting smothered with another layer. So it just doesn't factor into it really. Cheers! :-)

So I am confused about when to transplant outside. I have a 3x5 indoor grow tent with a light. My tomato and pepper seed packets said to start 6-8 weeks before the average last frost. I am in zone 9B and my average last frost is Feb 30th, March 1st depending on the source. I started my plants 5 weeks before the last frost and some of them are already 8 inches tall looking like they are ready to go outside now. I have also read not to transplant tomatos outside until night time temperatures are consistently in the 50s. I am just seeing contradictory planting advice, can I plant after my last frost date, or do I have to wait until night time temperatures are in the 50s.
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
Right on Ramone..you're on a great trajectory! Its not the plants that are "ready" to go outside that's the issue......its is the OUTSIDE ready for the plants? Peppers and Tomatoes need the outside temps to stay above 50-55F at night. Its a physiological requirement for these tropical plants. They don't care about frost date or what the calendar says. They respond to stimuli like heat, light, and water. And if the temps are too low for a warm weather plant, it'll kill them. :-)
@ramonebrown57043 жыл бұрын
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thanks, so take the advice of waiting until night temps are consistently in the 50s. I checked the 10 day forecast and my lows are all in the low 40s. I feel the advice on the seed packets is a little misleading. Had I started my seeds earlier as the packet suggested they would be 3 weeks ahead of where they are now, with another 3-4 weeks before the temperature is right. I have one tomato variety in particular which is really thriving in my little tent called Orange Jazz. With tomatoes, I think rather than following the advice on the packet it would be better to start 3-4 weeks before the last frost.

@@ramonebrown5704 yeah, the windows are pretty loose though. Start too early and your plants are a little large... Not a bad thing. Start late and the plants need to catch up a little bit... Again, not the end of the world. As you get more seasons under your belt, you'll find the magic date for you and your situation. Best of luck!

I don't make mistakes. When it comes to gardening, I prefer "learning experiences." In 2019, I grew in fabric containers, like Smart Pots. I could plant more in the fabric pot than I could have if the pots were plastic. The plants don't get root bound in the fabric pots. That's one thing that I learned. Last year, I didn't grow a garden, container or otherwise. I did consider setting up an indoor garden; but, don't really have the space. Maybe for sprouts, I do. If I were allowed to put out my fabric pots this year, there are things that I would do differently from 2019. I would trellis the cucumbers rather than let them sprawl. I'm still learning about bell peppers. I'd love to be able to grow them; but, over the years, since I've lived in Washington, I do not have much success. Tomatoes, on the other hand, are the easiest for me to grow, especially Early Girl. They seem to do really well as long as I give them enough water.

I live in Miami, FL. I like planting tomatoes but I don't have success. The plants are healthy but they flower and then they get eaten by unseen pests. What can I do?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms3 жыл бұрын
Oh no Lilliam, that's not good. Especially after all the effort has been put in. I think we would need to diagnose the pests first. It seems like the plants are on the right path, hit an advanced stage, then attract a pest. What does the damage look like?

Yeah I'm not going to mulch. I'm so sick and tired of people saying that mulching is a game changer. It just doesn't work for me. There's always hundreds of ants. Red southern Georgia ants. Do you want to get bitten by them... I know I don't.
