This presentation provides an overview of thermal protection systems (TPS) used on space vehicles and a brief description of the environments to which they are exposed. The types of TPS will be discussed as well as their current availability. Challenges facing the TPS designer will also be summarized.

Stan Bouslog earned his B.S & M.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. In support of NASA programs he has been an analyst for both aerothermodynamics and thermal protection systems (TPS) and conducted hypersonic and arc-jet tests. He has served as the Aero/Thermal Manager for the X-33 TPS, supported the Columbia Accident Investigation, and also served as the Orbiter TPS NASA System Engineer and the Orion Heat Shield Subsystem Manager. Currently, he is the TPS Senior Discipline Expert at NASA JSC.
