Thermostat cycles per hour of the heat pump #2

I'm in Montreal, Canada. I recently had a heat pump installed, which they call locally a thermopump. I just found that in the heat setting, it was cycling all the time (turning-on and off).. the gas furnace was always having to turn-on to warm the house to the desired temperature. But in the summer it was cooling perfectly. Electricity here is cheap compared to other forms of fuels, that's why I had a heat pump installed. I paid $6000 Canadian dollars all included for the Lennox XP-14, so I called back the HVAC company and insisted they send a technician to make adjustments. Now the heat-pump functions for one hour, then turns off, then the gas furnace will only kick-in if not enough heat has been produced. And you are right in saying the heat pump needs at least a few minutes to produce it's luke-warm heat, that is, to reach it's correct operating parameters. Mines keep going on and of when it reaches its temp it shut of and comes back on about 2 min after its a Honeywell thermally stat

Hey GFM I'm 19 years old im about to finish school and I'm already thinking about what I can do next after about 7-10 years as a tech. I want to increase my knowledge and responsibility as well as pay. I got my section 608 universal certificate and I'll be getting a certificate of completion for attending a tech school. what are some other certificates I can earn to benefit me as well as what are some paths I can take?

You need every related license you can get. Most of these licenses are local or state so I can't give specifics. Natural gas license, electrician license, all the manufacturer licensing are a few. Hope this helps and welcome to the industry. GFM

I've noticed that my heat pump cycles a lot right now in the cooling season. I live in northeast Georgia and it's pretty humid.

If you have an electronic thermostat, the cycles per hour may be adjustable in the installer setup. Mechanical stats are usually non adjustable at 3 cycles per hour. GFM

If they cycle rate is set to 2cph and the heat pump is sized moderately wont it cause the system to over shoot on mild days or have large droops on colder days. I guess what I'm saying is If it's set at two but demand needs 4cph at that time will it over ride that setting to maintain steady temp or cause big swings?

I live in Colorado and I have an 80% FHA furnace with a Honeywell T4 programable TH4110U2005 stat. My 80% forced hot air furnace seems to cycle too much making it far less efficient as the blower is a power hog. Can I reduce the cycling by changing the ISU 370 setting to limit this and will this change the algorithm for deadband control? Lower CPH = longer run times. Or will I just see the deadband control (+/- 1 deg fixed) take over and continue to see the same amount of cycling based on thermal loading factors (outdoor temp, heat loss, wind speed etc). Hope I am making sense. I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you.

Your thermostat has no direct CPH setting as many do. You can go into installer setup and set the system in the hot water heat setting as this setting usually has lower CPH than forced air. GFM

When is it too cold for a heat pump? I have a 2015 Goodman,3 ton (I think thats right) 14 seer.I was using it tonight and it was still heating just fine and the outside temperature is 7° F.

When the temps drop, the pump will usually continue to operate but may not keep up with the load. The backup heat will automatically come on to keep the temp up. Merry Christmas GFM

My thermostats swing too much. The rooms get hot and then cold etc. They run the circulators and the furnace has an aquastat and a tankless coil for domestic hot water. What do you think?

Narrow the differential. Measure the run periods, both off and on.

Hi i live up in michigan, bought a 10 year old house and had a heil observer system installed when we moved in, the thermostat was set at a default of 4 cycles per hour and can go down to 2, the heat pump lock out is set at 25 degrees before it will switch to propane furnace. What do you like to set the lockout at for the colder climates and do you recommend the 2 cycles over the 4 for the heat pump operation

I usually say the lockout should be set to when the supply air is uncomfortably cool. The 2 cycles for the heat pump is about right. When the furnace is in propane mode you might like 4. GFM

I think simply talking about cycle times per hour only is slightly misleading. I think it's more important to determine how long it runs and how long is period it is off. It's simpler I believe with a single stage 80% furnace. With a heat pump, I presume the off cycle has to be long enough for the gas pressure to bleed down and equalize. Short cycling could be a major issue. This is not so much the case with a single stage furnace. I'm not sure they can even short cycle, at least the type I had where the furnace was mostly dominated by the internal limit control. With a two stage unit, it's more about how long does it run in Stage I, and then in Stage II. I know that with my new furnace I would really like to have more detailed recorded diagnostics on the exact run times, and in what mode. As it is, I have to watch it carefully in the daytime while I'm awake. But during the night when it's the coldest, I really have no idea exactly how it is cycling. I installed my furnace myself, and that's considered sort of a "no no" by the manufacturers. Of course it depends on a person's experience and ability to analyze what's happening and dig for information, particularly when the accompanying documentation is very marginal. I'm questioning exactly how good is a so called "professional" installation. It takes a lot of time to properly tune up a furnace. Just clocking the meter for gas consumption takes quite a bit of time and effort. Is there some sort of recording unit that can be left on these domestic furnaces so that the technician can leave it after an adjustment, and come back the next day to see how it's actually performing?

Honeywell Installer Setup Number 0220 options 1-6 First Stage Compressor Cycles.. I have a 5 ton oversized system, changed from 3 CPH to 2. Hopefully it helps in 110f AZ 11 month summers.. Was on/off all day and never comfortable..

My honeywell digital wifi heatpump thermostat cycles way too quickly and the cph setting has no effect. I'm very disappointed in this thermostat because it cycles several times per half hour and runs a short time while it's on.

Are you sure the thermostat is doing the cycling. It is possible the unit is cycling on a safety. GFM

​​​@@grayfurnaceman It's the thermostat, I hear both fan and compressor relays click off/on. Compressor run is only about 4-5 minutes to satisfy thermostat. Thermostat is mounted just above handler return (at floor) by a couple feet, there's one return and airflow seems to be plenty, perhaps excessive if anything. This is while running in cool mode. In heat mode, aux heat is engaged about every cycle as t-stat temp dips below setpoint by 3 degrees. In heat mode, this 10 SEER r22 system can supply all my heat down to about 20F outdoor ambient without engaging aux heat strips. Maybe I need to relocate the t-stat further away from the return but I was counting on cph setting having some effect.

@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Remove the thermostat and cap the hole behind with insulation, taped over with duct tape. You may have airflow coming out of the wall during operation fooling the stat. GFM

@@grayfurnaceman Okay, we've had some milder weather but it looks like the cycle length has increased considerably since covering the large hole in the wall behind the thermostat. This hole behind the thermostat was large enough to mount a duplex electrical outlet (to give some idea of the size of the hole) and just on the other side of the wall is the air handler (in a utility closet). Both sides of the wall are drywalled but still there was that large hole behind the thermostat, so I installed a gasket between the wall and the thermostat with a small hole just large enough to pass the control wire through. The gasket was made by cutting a shape from a clear plastic soda drink bottle. So thanks for your help isolating the root cause of the relatively short cycles for this compressor, it appears cold room air was being drafted through the thermostat housing and into the closet, which runs at a slight negative pressure (enough to pull and latch the closet door shut).
