I’ve recently taken up birdwatching, bought some binoculars and a bird book, I’ve had ALOT of negativity towards me for taking up this hobby, not sure if anyone else has, I have read online that most people think birdwatching is creepy. I’ve had names called like ‘peeping Tom’ etc On my walks I get a lot of funny Looks, I don’t point the binoculars at anyone. Human beings attitude is stupid. But I have had a few people being positive towards me asking what I’ve seen etc so not all negative. TBH I’ve totally given up on caring what others think, don’t care anymore, bought some bird feeders for my garden loving it :) London,UK

It's a good thing it's never too late to start! I would definitely call myself a casual birder. While I will definitely look for them when I'm outside, I don't go on trips to see rare species, and I'm not nearly as good at IDs as some of the people I know. But, just like many of the hobbies I enjoy, we don't have to worry about competing against other people, only ourselves.

My then girlfriend (now fiancé) bought me the Peterson field guide for my birthday and it’s been a hit ever since. I’ve had so much fun looking for birds and learning about their lives. I recently uploaded some video of Osprey at a local Lake in my area. I’m trying to figure out how I can better capture images of them when I see a new bird.

I love birding… it’s very peaceful for me. I just got some new binoculars and went out for this weekend to the forest and a river and I’m seeing a lot of different species cause I’m not in my original state of California I’m in Oregon. Just got into it, more officially but have been interested in it a long time. My favorite bird is definitely the (real) Roadrunner. So much more awesome than the cartoon. And my favorite spot is Bosque del Apache near Socorro NM.

My father loved bird 🦅 watching. He belonged to the KOS Kentucky Ornithological Society. He attended many spring and summer bird count weekend meetings. He got his life long friends interested, Dr & Mrs Wendall Kingsolver. When I was old enough he would take me out with him. Years later I found out that the Kingsolver’s daughter Barbara was a NY Times best selling author. We also had many adventures bird watching. My father encouraged me to keep and maintain a life list. He helped me start one but I’m not sure what ever happened to it. I wish I could locate it. I remember him sitting in our front room playing an Audubon society record of bird songs over and over. You could blindfold him and he could probably identify more birds just by listening than most people could looking for them in the exact same location. Sadly my father passed away a couple years ago, but when I see birds I remember the great times birdwatching with him.

I got interested lately because birds and squirrels love my leftover fries at McDonald’s. God created them for many reasons. The main reason I’ve become interested is before my wonderful Christian dad would become distracted as he approached his 90s, dad would stop listening to my stories and focus on the birds. It was one type of moment that I wish I’d of slowed down and took it all in. But dad is gone now. Great memories.

I've always enjoyed birdwatching, and I have a life list of birds I've seen. So far, I've seen 261 species of birds.

I started birding a month ago, I have bought a long lens for my camera and noticed that it is very good for photographing birds, so I created a little booklet with more or less 150 common species that can be found in my area (northern Portugal). The goal is to "catch'em all", and complete the booklet. So far I have shot 63 species from the booklet and other 7 that weren't there but I still keep track. In total, 70 different species in a month. Portugal is a nice place to photograph birds because we are in the route of many migrating birds and also many of them pass the winters here. I have already noticed some birds that I start to see a lot more now at the end of summer than I did a month ago.

2:05 I never thought of the binoculars as optional, but I suppose I bird almost as often without binocs as I do with! For beginners it might be a good idea to "bum a scope" off someone at a prime spot until you get more familiar with ID at a distance

Absolutely! I think the great thing about birding is that you can be doing it while also doing other things, so you might not have binocs or a scope. I've used my telephoto lens on my camera as a scope a fair number of times, too!

Since we are social distancing, I’m not at work (I work at a day program, that is work/school for special ed adults, we do fun pass times like puzzles and movies, we do easy work like picking up trash and stuffing envelopes). Ooh, hornbills are amazing! It's difficult for me to choose my favorites, because I love so many of them! But I think black-capped chickadees and red-tailed hawks might be my favorites because they were the first I learned to identify. However, I also really love the sandhill cranes and the sounds they make as they return in the spring during migration.

Yes! If you'd like a good field guide, I recommend the Peterson Field Guide (linked in the video description) for North America. I'm not sure about the best bird books for other parts of the world, but the Peterson series is a good place to start :)

I heard a different chirping sound than the normal bird sounds im used to hearing coming from my back yard here in the Mojave desert of Calif. I located the sound and on top of a telephone pole wire was a yellow breasted bird with a black throat about the size of a starling which iv'e never seen in this region before, the closest bird in pictures that it looks like is the "hooded Warbler" which is supposed to be an Eastern states bird? i couldnt tell if it had the black on top of its head,but it did under irs throat.Before i could get binoculars it flew off.

Oh bummer! It's so frustrating when they fly off. Occasionally you can find Eastern birds in the West and vice versa if they're young and dispersing or if they get thrown off by storms.
