This is an excellent tip. Many scan tools have a separate I/M readiness function, which might be quicker and easier to access than going through the OEM diagnostic menu. For scan tools without a separate I/M readiness button, reading Mode 6 data on the OBD-II side of a scan tool may also be faster than going through the OEM side of a scan tool.

Best advice for folks looking at used vehicles. This does not mean that there won’t be any issues whatsoever, but this will tell you a lot about the vehicle and the folks selling it. 👍

Good video. I also learned on KZbin when I buy used to go on your test drive, make turns left & right all the way to lock, listen for cv noises. When you get back, look under warmed up car for any leaks. Have someone rev engine while you look at exhaust to see if any smoke (burning oil). This worked well for me on 2 used Subarus that we ran with zero problems. One with 133k & 99k miles, neither use any oil & everything works. 👍🏻

Yup, this is a good trick, I know someone who bought a 18 buick encore that had a cracked turbo housing which sets low boost code and trigger CEL to come on. The crack is not too bad so usually takes many drive cycles to set the code, either the seller or the previous owner cleared the code and the vehicle was sold to her with this problem. Luckily GM had a special coverage on this year and model so she got the turbo replaced for free.

I've seen an obd data parameter in my car that says "miles driven since code clear." That's another good one to look at. Of course that could mean that something was recently fixed and codes were cleared as well. It will not always be something they're trying to hide.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one preaching this to customers and viewers. We see WAY too many vehicles brought in for inspection AFTER being bought. Never do that folks, unless you're buying something really cheap that just runs and drives knowing it will only last a short time. Any serious vehicle investment should be checked by your mechanic. Two biggest issues, frame damage poorly or never repaired, or worse covered up and trouble codes recently cleared hiding major issues.

In Sweden you have 3-6 months guarantee if you buy from a car company. So you dont really need to check for hidden faults. Also a mandatory car inspection once every year. If they find something that had been there for atleast a year, well then you can claim your warranty =) If you buy private, well then its up to you to check things, bit also here you are covered with swedish law

It's been my understanding after doing my own maintenance on my 96 Chevy Lumina van using the GM factory shop manual that the check engine only comes on if there's a problem with the emission system. It won't come on for other general engine problems like a fuel pump going bad or a bad sparkplug, e.t.c. But my vehicle is 28 years old so that might not apply anymore.
@deerhunter85332 күн бұрын
Bad spark plugs will cause a misfire. You will get a p0300 random cylinder misfire or a specific cylinder misfire code. Both of this situations are considered emissions related since they will affect the emissions of the vehicle

I tell people to buy what they can afford to pay off in 3 years, and to only buy new. Nothing worse than having a breakdown, out of warranty, and paying for an expensive repair, as well as the note on the loan. If that means buying a no options Toyota, as opposed to a loaded up premium car, so be it. One needs a ride to work. It doesn't have to be in a Mercedes to make it.

Carfax isn't total BS, it's just not complete. But it does tell you what was done. When I bought a used car last time, it told me that the oil changes had been frequent and regular. It told me major services that had been completed. That's good information to know, not BS. It just didn't tell me what it didn't tell me.
