In my opinion one of the worst things about hetalia, when I was in the hetalia fandom, was that since the show is generally about up and running countries, fans would use current events and tragedies as fanart fuel or roleplay stories. They would take it as an opportunity to further advance ships or sexualization of a character. They'd care more about the fictional personification than the real world situation and victims. During the Paris attacks, I remember someone posted a long paragraph about poor, weak and broken fictional France on a roleplay account, but then when called out about it, she basically defended herself by saying she wanted to use it to make France (the character) seem weak and hurt so her England roleplay partner could help "fix" him. She said she wasn't thinking about the real world France but just liked the story of it and wanted to create her take on it. This was like, a day or two after the attack actually happened. Ick. As a former hetalia fan, I sincerely hope I never was like anyone in this video and I'm almost positive I wasn't. ...Funnily, I'm actually a history major now.

Regarding the issue of using real-life events, I think the general agreement for Hetalia fans (that I've seen) is an explicit agreement to not use current events in anyway, out of respect and propriety. But I guess there's always the insensitive jerks.

Were married with marriage problems and the OC happened to be pregnant with Prussia's kid... As a Prussia fangirl I just left the group and bleached my brain by how the RP was all over the place and how they tried to kill Prussia... Again. But other then that experience the fandom is quite nice I've meet some of my best friends through the fandom.

Honestly the Hetalia fandom can be pretty embarrassing at times, I was almost ashamed for being part of it even though I'm one of the more peaceful creatures. I remember there was a panel of Hetalia voice actors, and an audience member forced the voice actor of America to say "England looks dead sexy in a miniskirt" and was cheered on by the rest of the fujoshis. I physically cringed at that shit bc the voice actor looked so uncomfortable doing it. Also, this one girl asked the voice actors of America and England what their thoughts of the USUK ship was (during the same panel). She was also cheered on by a sea of roaring fujoshis. This was the savage answer the America guy gave: "Again with the supporting thing, I don't care. Every girl asks me that because they want to live this fantasy. Like you want me to go, 'Oh my god, do you know how much I love that? Do you know how much that turns me on? ' Do you know how much I go home and tell my wife 'Oh honey, you should have seen this drawing of this character that I play and this other character that this other dude plays and how they were getting it on. Oh my god, check this out baby.' Never happens, never will."

I'm not saying that I dislike or hate the fandom, but if you're watching a historical anime at least learn from it instead of doing the exact opposite. Hetalia sparked my love for history, and up until now I cherish it. Despite it being almost two years since I last watched it, my love for history is unmistakable. CJCroen1393 It is, considering the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. What I mean are ships like PruCan and FrUK. They aren't the most historically accurate ships. FrUK is a relationship between two countries WHO GENERALLY were ENEMIES against each other for several decades. PruCan is a relationship between Prussia and Canada. Historically, Canada and Prussia didn't interact much, perhaps even none at all.

Aaaah, yes. What a nostalgic feeling, hearing of these cringy fangirls. I'm still a Hetalia fan, but luckily never got too deep into the fandom. I started watching it when I was 14 or something and met a lot of people over the years on conventions and meet-ups. But guess what: 90% of them were sane about Hetalia. The other 10% were these typical weirdos you could meet on any convention. Or people who would take the historical part of the show WAY too serious and would discuss literally everything or tell you how incorrect your costume was and stuff. (or doing nazi jokes but everybody would simply cringe because we're in Germany and these were just embarrassing.) Luckily, most fans have grown up. I'm 21 now, most of my friends who still like Hetalia are at least 19. Do we sarcastically mock each other when we cosplay? Of course. Do we go onto the Internet to write endless essays about how ship xyz is garbage? Hell no, because we have shit to do and fcking respect other opinions.

There were tons of PSAs about how bad it was at the time to do and those cosplayers got called out for it too. One of my friends, this girl I know (not gonna name her), she was an extreme shipper of yaoi and the male characters. I haven't made a youtube comment in a while, but hope you don't mind me chipping in. I was at that photoshoot (around the 3:40 mark) 10 years ago where the Germany cosplayers were doing the nazi salute. This was right when the fandom started getting out of hand. One person started the salute, who was a known troublemaker in the fandom, and most of the others who saluted were kids. The salute lasted for literally 5 seconds, because the humongous group of people taking pictures mostly stopped taking pics and started screaming "NO!!! STOP!!!" A few older people there immediately went to inform them what they were doing was wrong, because the kids had no idea. (The troublemaker just laughed and said it was a joke, and obviously, we grew to dislike her even more) During and after the con, there was a lot of discussion on New England cosplay boards about what happened. We tried to defend the young/ignorant so they wouldn't be ripped to pieces online (btw, thank you for using a pic with blurred faces), and make it clear that what happened was not okay and needs to not happen again. It was a big deal, trust me. Nazi salutes never happened and/or were never tolerated at New England Hetalia photoshoot events ever again. What happened sucked, and was not good or funny in any shape or form. But we didn't sweep it under the rug, we apologized for it, and we turned it into a learning experience and a clear message of what the cosplay/Hetalia community would never tolerate. Then the fandom went to utter shit and most of the adults left. Hope you don't mind me providing some context to a photo that got passed around a lot to try to shame all the Hetalia fans who were good....

@@shanabrown3760 I actually only cosplayed England (so I was in the crowd taking pics during that). For that convention, I didn't have any Germany cosplayer friends. There was a 14-year-old Germany cosplayer who was a cousin of a friend of a friend (we hung out a little bit during the con, but didn't talk much). She cried later about making that mistake and not realizing what the salute really meant. I won't identify too much, because it has been a long while to try to stir up that drama and drag people down.... But two of the biggest instigators in starting the salute (who were adults who should have known better) are towards the top middle. One my past friends (haven't talked to them in a very long time, were more fandom friends than anything) is in the bottom row, now realizing what's going on behind them and wondering why people are screaming "No! Stop!"

I was 11 or so. I was an innocent kid who didn't have the internet until recently at the time and my family were far to poor to buy new movies regularly so I watched _a lot_ of kids shows like Scooby Doo and Spongebob. When we got internet, we also got a Netflix subscription. I watched Hetalia and my god it changed my life. I was so into the show I decided to look up my favorite character (Switzerland) on the internet... Oh God. I found endless pieces of yaoi, dick pics, scat porn, piss porn and weird shipping. This stuff doesn't faze me anymore, but it changed my perception back then.

Thanks to Hetalia, I got interested in history. I adored Nordic 5 to the point that I got into Norse mythology. I don't regret that tbh. I've kind of forgotten about Hetalia but I'm still interested in history and different cultures, so the anime and manga did a lot of good for me. I have to say I really love Hetalia and Germany's my favorite character. He has been one of the reasons I started studying German seriously and loving Germany as a country. However, the worst I've observed in the fandom in Spain is that most of them have like hierarchical structures where certain people feel more important than others, just because they arrived first in the fandom or because they just feel superior. I haven't seen it in other fandoms. That's a reason which makes you wanna enjoy the show yourself and not sharing anything to others.

I loved Hetalia as a goofy parody on countries around the world. It was fun and hilarious. But the ships killed me. And I think the creator kinda fueled the fire. Germany and Italy, America and England, and Greece and Japan just to note the ones that I saw being promoted. I mean, I get that they were trying to portray the relationships between the countries and what they're like, but it almost came off as the creator was fueling it.

When I was 11 and 12 I was a huge hetalia weeb. One time I went to a convention and me and my girlfriend at the time cosplayed usuk. This person dressed as france started calling me names and wouldn't stop putting themselves all over my gf and sexualizing her despite her obvious discomfort. That was the straw on the camels back that made me ditch hetalia for good. I had already dealt with so many stupid weebs and awful people at that point. I do miss those days though. I used to be a hardcore USUK shipper... Then I discovered FrUK. Now I can't stand USUK. It's just too weird for me, same with Franada (which I never got into). I also like some rarerpairs you can hardly ever find material for, such as GerFra and SuDen. (And Prussia x France, which is so rare and so good when it's actually good that it hurts.)

I didn't know much about Hetalia at the time, but the whole idea of personified nations literally fueled my love of history a couple years back! I ended up getting a 93 on my state history exam and moved up from having the 9 and 10-grade history classes (cause I was failing) to having another astounding 94 test score in the 11 grade. I'm dead serious. I finally just recently watched the show, and boy, it's way gayer than I expected it to be. But I enjoy it very much. Which have long since changed to other historical periods in time. I used evidence that Germany does not represent Nazi Germany at the time, but the people and culture. I actually have a very positive story because of my Hetalia phase! I was a freshman in high school, standing in line, waiting to go into my math class, when someone approached me and shyly pointed at my America pin and said, "Do you watch Hetalia?" I smiled, said yes and that I loved the show (I was really into USUK back then and, by coincidence, the person I was talking to looked a lot like England). We talked about what we both liked the show and the person told me that he had recently started cosplaying England and I laughed because I was part of my friend's new cosplay group, as America. I asked him to join my friend's cosplay group and he agreed. Well, long story short, I'm now two years into college and I've been in a happy relationship with this guy for just about 5 years now! Although both of us have grown out of Hetalia (and cosplaying, in general), I still look back at this time in my life and think about how lucky I was to have gotten into the Heta-fandom. If it weren't for Hetalia, I wouldn't have met him and who knows how different everything would have been thereafter! :D EDIT: Wow. This comment from several years ago blew up! To answer the question I’ve gotten most: no, we aren’t still together. The relationship started going south about a year later. Then, he actually broke up with me on my 21st birthday, kicked me out of his apartment, and forced me to move back in with my parents- all in the same day. I’m serious. It didn’t end well. Haven’t really spoken to him since. Currently laughing at my original comment because it totally fits the “Hetalia is hella cringe” message of this video lol. But, I guess it’s true that had I not gotten into that relationship, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I met someone new, while playing Pokémon GO at the park (again, yes, I’m serious) and we’ve been together for over a year and a half now. I genuinely love him so much more than I ever thought I could love anybody. Sometimes, I really feel like I may have finally met my future husband. He is my best friend! We have our very own apartment now and I really wanna adopt a kitten. I even showed him the dusty box of Hetalia merch under the bed at my parents’ apartment from when I was in high school and he didn’t leave me lol. He actually finds Hetalia to be pretty funny, but we both agree that it’s not really for either of us anymore. Had it not been for Hetalia, I would’ve never been here, lying in bed, on a Monday morning, during COVID-19 times, telling you all about the funny life I’ve lived. Go figure. Something similair happened to me, you see my family moved 5 times (i live in Germany and were moving again next year btw) so i had no friends when we moved into the middle of some shooping part in town. My mom meet some people who live near our neighborhood and these moms often go to the park together to drink tea and chat, so whenever i went there my brother would play with the kids while i would sit on the swing alone there was this girl i didn't really like (can't remember why) Anyway this girls grandma invited us to her house on her birthday (my moms friend is the girls aunt and her other friend is their neighbor) I was bored and started drawing on paper towels the girl saw me and asked me what i was doing when i showed her she took out a sketchbook and gave me a site we talked while drawing and found out that we had a lot in common and were in the same fandoms (MLP,Sonic x,Pokemon,American dragon....) I got into it when it was still very small, when everything was still a strip on Himaruya's website. No anime, no manga, heck, the Canada strip hadn't even come out yet! There were less than 100 fics for it on FF dot net. It seemed like a growing paradise... Little did I know the hell it would become. Though I distinctly remember the wank and drama surrounding the Nazi cosplayer salute featured in this vid, there was one fanfic in particular that made me nope the hell out of that fandom. Though I'd moved on to other things, I never forgot my enjoyment of a certain ship. Imagine my surprise to find a much smaller, much more welcoming and friendly Hetalia fandom. No more do I see vicious FrUK vs USUK vs RusAme or GerIta vs Germancest shipping wars. No more wank. It couldn't be better than this. 👍

See this is why I'm so glad that I got into it when I did, which was only about the year before last. Then again, that was just the show and then subsequently the manga, I only actually entered the fandom a few months ago (I was a bit scared, to be honest) but I found the current fandom to be extremely accepting and welcoming, and speaking from the perspective of someone who likes history itself, I find it nice to not get attacked whenever I post a historically accurate head cannon or fanfic that may slightly mess with characters a bit. Overall my reception of the current fandom is... Great! I just hope it doesn't blow up again, for whatever reason.

I joined around three years ago, just as the crazy fans were dying out. I was on the lower spectrum of obsession (mainly flocking to fanfics or art) but to hear stories of those taking obsession to a new level was actually quite frightening. To kow that there are people out there that crazy is ridiculous yet true. Today, however, the fandom itself, though not dead in the slightest, is definitely a much friendlier and less crazy place. Hopeful those who join the fandom from now into the future can have a safe and happy experience and be able to avoid seeing the scars of hate left on posts, art, or even stories made back in the days of toxicity.

During our lessons on Germany, an actual Holocaust Survivor came into class to talk about the war first hand. Also, I have a very embarrassing story. When I was in a sophomore in high school, I had taken AP European history. I, at the time, wasn't a huge hetalia fan (I liked it when I was 11-13) and thought my whole 'hetalia phase' was cringy ASF. The teacher had asked the entire class what the Baltics states were. I IMMEDIATELY knew the answer, but I didn't want to be ~that hetalian who knows the answer~ but NOBODY else knew. So I raised my hand, and answered Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia and the teacher smiled. And he had no idea. That the Baltic trio was my favorite hetalia trio and I only knew because of fucking hetalia. Hetalia doesn't teach you much history wise, but it can probably help you name the Baltic states.

I joined the fandom about a year a ago, glad I missed the whole horror. I love history and geography, and personifying country is an interesting idea and the possibilities on how many shows there can be. I know it's a comedy but I would also like to see the more serious and dark part of history (I think it's me), but not to frequent just some mini-arch scattered here and there. In the end I think it's my most favorite anime and no hard core weebos or the haters will ruin it for me. I just hope Latin America get created ASAP.

well there are two latin american countries to be featured in hetalia. first was Cuba, then years later Ecuador was introduced. he was based on an Ecuadoran friend that hidekaz himaruya(the creator of hetalia) had when he studied in new york during college. Though Mexico has been mentioned from time to time in the manga but never shown. I think the reason why no more latin american countries were introduced the creator said in his blog that he doesn't know a lot of latin american history. also he found out about the fan created latin american characters the fandom made. I like to think that he decided not to spoil their fun by introducing more latin american countries, since many fans became attached to the fan created ones.

I had always hoped Himaruya would research the fanmade ones after being informed about LH Chile and maybe use them as inspiration for canon characters. Of course, there was one dude who made like, and entire graphic novel with, you guessed it, Hetalia. My poor, poor teacher didn't know what Hetalia was, and he hung it up in his room for the "amount of effort" that was put into it. It's still there, and it makes me cry seeing it.

The fandom was so horrible it actually made me stop watching the show for a very long time. I can watch the show now and greatly enjoy the characters, so you could call me a casual fan at this point. I'm surprised you didn't mention the jackasses who legitimately HATED the female characters of Hetalia for basically no reason other then the fact they were female. I also had a friend(not my friend any more due to reason unrelated) who is still deeply involved in the fandom, she legit treated Dojins and fanfics as cannon! Like she was fully aware they are fanmade but still thought that way. It was impossible to have a conversation about the character England in particular without her bringing up FRUK or USUK (she shipped both weirdly enough, which I think is kind of hilarious considering how much those ships battled) and citing stuff that happened in a fan comic. She wasn't the only one, lots of people apparently lots of people got way into pretending fanmade shit about the characters was cannon, I mean I get headcannons but seriously! There is a difference between how you want a character to be and how they are. There was also the idiots who decided to make fanworks of the characters getting sexually assaulted and the fan girls going,"omg! Soooo sexy! It ain't rape if ya like it ;3" and shit like that. It happens in a lot of fandoms but I remember the Hetalia fandom being one of the worst when it came to that. And don't even get me started on how toxic the RP portion of the fandom could get. I am very grateful to Hetalia itself though. It actually helped spark my love for history and culture. It even inspired me to make my own personifications of the solar system. So despite the bullshit the fandom put me through I have a soft spot for the show and its characters.

Today in the hetalia fandom, we’re just a bunch of chill anime fans hanging out in the deep dark corner of tumblr and youtube reassuring each other that the fandom will rise again (which it will). There is peace among the shippers, since most of the more aggressive shippers left the fandom, and there aren’t any ship wars. Since the fandom started to shrink we have learned to cooperate with each other to build it up again. And we let are passion for the series motivate us to keep moving forward. We are still strong!

I've only been a Hetalia fan for a year, I've actually never really met another fan, let alone a crazy one. Hetalia helped me a lot, both with History and Geography, it got me even more interested than I already was. It helped to imagine the characters when we spoke about either historic events or the country itself with its culture, it made everything more fun for me. I also got better at memorizing where the countries were because of this XD. I ship characters, Yes, I do. But I'm not crazy about it. I ship GerIta for its cute side, specifically giving Germany another side that we don't get to see that much. I ship Spamano for the tsundere Romana and the ever so cheerful Spain. I ship Usuk because they have so much history and went through so much hardships together. I have other ships too, but I'll stop before everyone does think I'm crazy. The thing is, despite shipping these characters, I can still see them apart. I can still see Italy and Germany as best friends and very good allies, I can still see the good and almost brotherly friendship between Romano and Spain and I can still see England and America as simply brothers. I also got so much more interested in other cultures, this show helped spread my horizon so much farther. Not to mention all the good fanarts I've seen, and it's not only art. It's also MMD videos, fantastic cosplays and very good RPG games that fans put so much work and time in (They are very much original). The point is I loved this show and it helped me a lot, I really appreciate everything I earned because of this beautiful show. Thank you for listening.
