Having recurring issues with oncholysis, I find that I have the best results getting my nails to reattach/grow out if I file them every 3-4 days or so, keeping them so short that there's little to no free edge. Also keeping the proximal nail folds pushed back does wonders, especially since my cuticle is super sticky and wants to hang onto the PNF. My damaged nails are almost all grown out! 😊

I have never known anyone who is so knowledgeable about nails! I have stopped picking the skin around my nails for nearly a month now and my hands look so much better, thanks to you! I push back the cuticle every few days and use lots of oils and creams to nourish my nails. You're the best and a wealth of information.

I went for a gel manicure in April and was recommended Builder. Not knowing what it was I said ok. I hated it, hated the feel of the product, so I went back 2 days later and had it removed. She wrecked my nails, just like this lady’s, she used acetone but then electronically filed it off. Two nails separated from the bed and one cracked off halfway. I found your channel and have kept my nails very short, and have been been oiling my cuticle area and following your advice and have let them grow out and I’m 80% of the way there, luckily my nails grow fast. To the woman whose nails these are, if you read this. I have extremely sensitive skin and nails. My natural nails are genetically thin and weak. I have had three major nail disasters because of my skin. These disasters were irritations to acrylics I wore for 15 years, 2 years later a reaction to thermal polish, and years after that a reaction nitrile gloves. All of these took forever to heal. The first two took a year each and the nitrile gloves reaction a little less. The nitrile gloves caused fingernail infections (took 4 before a friend and I figured it out) and after the infection healed, I ended up with onycholysis. So I have gone a long time on three different occasions with ugly nails. That doesn’t include the multiple times I have had onycholysis on my thumb nail. That nail matrix or something was damaged decades ago from acrylics. So I can totally relate to your problem and how embarrassed you might feel about your nails. You will get through this, I promise. It is surprising at how many people don’t look at another’s nails. I doubt anyone that does notice, would say anything. I certainly haven’t had anyone say anything to me. I am a gym rat and have done serious weight lifting for a couple of decades. Reaching for equipment and using your hands a lot is hard on nails and does make nails more noticeable. I can totally relate. During my disasters, I found concentration curls depressing because I always enjoy nice looking nails with that exercise. I do really echo Anna’s advice. Cut and file your nails short. I’d file as short as you can. I have also trimmed off all the lifted part, even if it is far back. It’s ugly, yes, but that is the only way mine has grown reattached. It Will also help keep the area under the nail dry. The dangerous part of onycholysis is the moisture getting trapped and leading to a bacteria or fungus infection. Oh, and using a blow dryer on cool is a good way of drying under the nail, if needed. Anna’s advice about not wearing polish is what I do, too. I don’t know about my nails because the 3 disasters badly effected my nail growth so I couldn’t wear polish, but when my skin acts up, it gets even more sensitive and even things that don’t bother it can irritate it more.

Anna, the most helpful advice of yours for me personally was to use Kerasal ointment. I use it as a cuticle treatment every evening before bed on both fingers and toes, and also as a balm on my feet and their calluses. Well, my feet are never going to be perfectly smooth and soft like a baby's (I'm 57), but it feels to good to be taking care of them in a way that produces results and is gentle. Anna! I agree that these are allergic reactions. I am very sensitive to some products, have had 'burning' over the many years of different methods/application types. This last 2 weeks, I had an allergy to a facial cream, and my one nail began to ache... the more irritants, the greater a reaction. I removed the product, nail had lifted, much like the pics here. Love that you considered this... BTW, when my nail (s) are injured, they grow faster. Love watching your vids!

Hi Anna and MSL! I’ve had multiple occurrences of onycholysis. My thumb must have a damaged matrix or nail bed, because it will get onycholysis if I bump it the slightest or something similar. Your advice about keeping the nails short, no product on it, and cutting/clipping out the lifted part is the only way mine has grown out reattached. The one time I had lifting near the tip but didn’t clip/file the lifted part off, I got a bacterial infection under the nail. Stupid me remembered too late that the hyponychium is a guardian barrier the same as the proximal nail fold. I lost the whole center of my nail from proximal nail fold to tip. It is ugly and takes forever, but with lifting and damaged nails, it is best to go naked nails, oil them like mad, clip them very short, and clip,lifted parts off-even if the lifted part goes way, way back. I’ve had to clip it almost to the proximal nail fold.

Hi All. Those are my horrible nails! I very much appreciate Anna's assessment and expertise. I am grateful to her and all of you who have offered advice. I have made an appt with a dermatologist. I cut my nails very short. I haven't taken the polish off yet ( I have to brace myself first lol) but will before I head to the dermatologist this week. To answer a few questions; ridges- I've always had them and they have gotten worse with age- both my mom and grandma had awful nails that split, cracked, ridges so it's in my DNA and they were of the mindset to cover them up and make them look nice outwardly, my mom was thrilled when acrylics came on the nail scene, little did they know; so now I am totally bewildered because looks like I have some slight separation at the very edge of my big toes and they never had gel so???? Could this also be a reaction to something I handled or touched? I started using a new skincare line a few months ago...I stopped using that line and am now using Cerave as Anna recommends, Eucerin lotion, Kerasal ( which I agree with Cat is a miracle treatment), I have CND Rescue Rxx and use it on my cuticles but will go 'all in' as directed with it once I remove all my polish. I'm super gentle with my nails and try not to disturb them. I push my cuticles back with my fingers for the most part but will use remover once a month to take care of overgrowth- going to rethink that after Anna's advice. The worst thing with my nails, first the builder gel application, I tried to soak it off but it requires to be filed off, I tried that by hand then went to a nail shop where they used an e file but left a layer of builder on so as not to damage the natural nail but I was told they had to put gel polish on bc standard polish wouldn't adhere and I listened- meanwhile it was on for 3-4 weeks and I couldn't get the stuff off bc the builder gel caused it to adhere unbelievably - it was like I needed explosives to get it off. I think that's where most of this damage or reaction occurred from two different gel products that were layered. Here I thought I was getting good advice but clearly the nail tech just wanted me to get a more expensive service. After having that gel removed ( DND brand) I had one more round of gel polish applied and when it was removed I realized OH NO, so here I am! Thanks again to you all. Anna you are the BEST!

Such an informative and easy-to-understand video. At the end of the day, it's common sense that these gel and acrylic products contain chemicals that allow the tips, powders, builder gel, etc to adhere and remain for relatively long periods of time. Hopefully, someone will come up with a formula for a new type of sticky tab with greater adhesive properties for people who want to use only press-on's or full cover tips. If I had the resources, I would be investigating that possibility myself. Thanks for your video.

Thanks for your info. I have a client who has Onycholisis due to Psoriasis. I adviced to stop with the enhancement... however she went to a dermatologist en she said there is no problem to continue with the gel/gelpolish... So what would you do in this situation?

I had nail tips put on two of my nails, they were chipped, had gel polish put on and did one more time, both those nails have trouble growing and keep breaking, not using anything right now, keeping it clean. Not planning to use anything till I see the growth as it is in the other nails 🤞

I use builder gel as well with no issues. Like anything else we all react differently to products. I'd be curious to know if these nails were already having issues and builder gel just made them worse. Improper prep or removal would contribute to damage as well.

Those tattered nails could be MINE! I also had builder gel applied by a tech who thought this would be the solution to help regrow my damaged nails due to several gel manicures and the removal of them with an e-file. Unfortunately, the builder gel began to come off and chip after a few weeks, and the nails were worse. I am here to learn how to care for my nails in order for my nails to grow back healthy.

I have thin nail beds and cannot have extensions but I will be trying regular polish with a gel top coat very soon. The nail on my right ring finger looks a little wonky. Prior to watching yout videos I going to apply gel. Im so glad I waited and learned that gel is for healthy nails Now weeks later the wonky nail is growing out and will only get healthier. I only apply gel on nails that are breaking. I dont reapply, I just allow it to grow out. I apply a thick base coat prior to applying regular polish and its impossible to tell that their is gel on the nail.

2 years ago I started using ORLY BIAB when one of nails broke or I was traveling. It has always been such an easy product to use with great results. I always just let it grow off. I used your video for the application instructions where you were applying It on MSL’s nails and I believe you were wearing it as well. Are you changing your opinion about it? No, it's not about Builder gels when used and cured properly. Some people get sensitised because of repeat exposure to improperly cured gels. People don't take proper cure seriously. Buy from reputable companies and follow instructions to a T. Orly is a wonderful brand and their BIAB is great (when used and cured properly) Too often people think of these products "like polish but cured in UV". Nothing further from the truth. They can be quite allergenic when not used properly and responsibl.

I had the exact same reaction after Biab nails and gel polish. My hands started to become very itchy and red. The doctor said it was eczema so I got a very heavy hormone based cream. Did not help. Then my nails started to become exactly like these in the video. 😣😣😣

I have gotten an allergy to everything fake nails (dip, gel, acrylic), even allergy safe ones :( Last night I tried press ons with regular nail glue and woke up with a severe allergic reaction :( sucks because I love doing my nails and now I just gotta use regular nail polish.

I have developed an allergy to gels (hema I'm assuming) and if I get a little under one of my nails and don't realize it and remove it, it will cause my nail to separate from the skin. It's like it dissolves the bonds that hold the nail to the skin

Hi Celeste! That's not how the allergy (overexposure) happens usually. Yes, they say no skin contact but the skin content usually comes from wiping the inhibition layer (the sticky layer) incorrectly. Often people rub this uncured gel into their skin actually (thinking they are wiping it off) and/or when filing improperly cured gel. The dust falls on the skin and if the gel was not properly cured touches the skin eventually this skin contact leads to overexposure and reaction you are describing. By the way, you can't see with a naked eye, is cured fully or not. Gel becomes hard and shiny after is cured to about 55%. you have to trust the gel manufacturer they tested the lamp you are using with the gel you are using properly. Not just looked at the gel and said "good enough" Just as with nail tools, you can't see bacteria and viruses with naked eye. You have to follow special procedures to disinfect the implements between clients to prevent spread of blood born pathogens. Looking at a toll and saying "looks clean" would be super irresponsible.

@@TheSalonLife well, I am not a pro and have been doing my nails myself for nearly a decade. It took probably 3 or 4 years of getting gel on my skin before I actually developed the allergy. I had no idea that it could even happen at the time! Luckily the gels of today don't cause nearly as strong of reactions. I used to get super itchy rashes on my thighs and if I had more gel than usual touching my skin, I would get the itchy rash all over my neck too. I'm so glad that doesn't happen anymore! However, if a bit of gel gets under the edge of a nail, it itches like crazy until I remove it. And, like I said, if I don't get it all it will cause a small spot of my nail to separate from the skin underneath

My dad suffers with Onychorrhexis, what can I do for him? He gets vertical splits down his nails even if he keeps his nails as short as possible. He is 81 so just puts up with it but I worry cause he catches it now n then. What can I suggest he try that either he or myself can do at home rather than trying to get him to come to a salon x

Hello H! Manicures at the salon won’t help this condition. I made couple of videos about how to care for ridgy nails. I mean see if there is anything else that can be causing it like health issues but most of the time ridges are normal part of aging. The ridges when the nail is dry can tear easily so the best thing is to try to prevent the dryness and brittleness. I suggest warm jojoba oil soaks every week. I will look for the video link. Also using ointment like Aquaphor or something after washing hands. These things should really help.

Although I’m qualified, we never covered how to help a client with any problem like this, just that it was a contra indication and to tell them to wait for their nail to regrow or come back with a drs letter… I’m a chair user and just work on friends when my spine allows, so I haven’t been able to gain the same experience as I would have in a salon setting… videos like yours are invaluable! Looks like a burning. When Gel is to thick applied and gets to hot while curing, it could cause burnings on the natural nail.

Hey Nicole- those are my awful nails- I responded to the group but here's additional info- yes it could be dietary- usually a lack of iron, I am a vegan so it could be possible but since I am a 'mature' woman I don't take iron supplements as they are not recommended for women past childbearing age...and yes the reason I got the builder gel to begin with is that my nails were splitting where the worst ridges were, mainly my two middle fingers. I've tried biotin and other supplements but they don't seem to work ( most ppl are not deficient in biotin) and often times supplements bother my stomach. Thank you for caring.

The nails lifting at the tip is caused by fungus getting under the nail due to poor sealing when the polish was applied. I agree that the product should be removed and daily soaking of the nails in warm water with dettol. It will kill the fungus and allow the nail bed to recover.

Fungus is a medical issue and it can only bye diagnosed and treated by a medical professional. Diagnosing diseases and suggesting treatment for a disease over internet is not right.

Suggesting any treatment for any infection or disease it totally outside our scope as nail technicians. Nail techs in USA and in Canada can only work on nails that appear healthy and normal. As your Health Department to be sure what you can’t and can do as a nail technician In Canada our salon was inspected yearly and we were strictly instructed to only work on healthy and normal nails. Fungal nails don’t appear normal and healthy. I also specifically checked with my insurance and they said I would be covered if I follow the regulations set by the local health department. This usually works the same in many states. I know that many people work outside of their scope but that doesn’t make it right. That’s why my rule of thumb is “my work is to beautify and maintain the health of nails” This person got the culture done and she doesn’t have a fungus by the way. I got an update from her. Ps. Dettol is an antiseptic and disinfectant, it’s not an anti-fungal. And no, as a nail tech you can’t recommend aspirin. What if someone is allergic to it? Or has a clotting disease? Or has a stroke and doesn’t get a medical treatment right away and just keeps taking aspirin? Even doctors won’t diagnose or recommend medications over the internet/in a comment section. People got sued for way less than that. Especially in USA

I hope she follows your advice. Those hands & nails look like they hurt and that would be enough to ditch the polish and trim my nails down to a healthy, manageable length. My mom made us kids push our cuticles back just with our thumb. ) thanks Mom)! Also, the nail splitting on her hands is really bad. If she gets Betadine from the grocery store and soaks them in water in about 10 drops of Betadine it will make them heal and get better real quick. You find Betadine in the pharmacy area of grocery stores.

Yep - she’s gotta trim them puppies short as long as she’s got lifting. Also, avoid products with HEMA, which is a known toxic irritant to skin and nails. It’s in 90% of polishes out there!!!! (HEMA, also known as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate or hydroxyethyl methacrylate). I fought that lifting nail problem hardcore - 8/10 of my nails were lifting and took me at least a year of trimming and wearing them ugly bare 😢….. I wish this girl much patience and luck ❤

Nail polishes do not contain HEMA, gel polishes can. HEMA is not really a problem though. Used in excessive amounts or used improperly can lead to allergic reaction. Irritation and toxicity are 2 different things. Overall I really feel that the industry would rather find a scapegoat (HEMA) rather than addressing the real issue: sloppy and irresponsible formulations, total lack of education before using these products and selling these products to DIYers. But it's easier to blame and demonise the ingredient and still sell to general public without proper education. If it's not HEMA it's going to be something else people will eventually react to when they are using these products incorrectly. We have had HEMA in products since I started in this industry almost 30 years ago. Never ever you heard of these type of reactions. Allergies were rare.

Will her split nail eventually grow out? I have a nail that is split like that and it doesn't seem to be growing out at all. I went to a Dr and was told he couldn't do anything, to "put on those fake nails all the ladies wear nowadays"! Can you imagine!!

Hi Beverly! It depends on the extend of damage and how you take care of the nails and if you are using anything damaging on your nails like polish, gel polish, etc. Sometimes polish can help and sometimes it can cause surface damage. Any one having nail issues should go see their doctor and get blood work done as it could be an indication of an underlying medical condition (ie: a thyroid condition, auto immune disease such as hashimotos, extreme vitamin deficiences etc). Builder gels, gel manicures, etc might be exacerbating an already pre existing condition. While all manicures come with a degree of damage, I those with already weakened nails from preexisting and unknown medical conditions may unknowingly blame their manicures for their nail conditions.

This is very common reaction (allergic) to gels. So the first step would be to rule out the first offender. If this doesn’t help then seeing a doctor is recommended. This persons nails have improved and I’m not sure if I did a follow up video or not.

her nails were probably already in a weak stat before gels....gels made it worse. as someone who suffers from hashimotos and auto immune issues...my nails were the first sign, but i blamed it on my polish/nail care. Those with autoimmune thyroid disorders like Hashimoto's or Graves' disease had a higher percentage of nail brittleness. Celiac disease, iron deficiences, diabetes, gluten intolerances can adversly effect the nails. I'm not saying gels are necessarily safe, but i'm suggesting that if nails are weaked due to an underlying health condition, gels might be make it worse....but may not be entirely to blame. When i see nails as bad as this, my first a blood test would rule out underlying health conditions, check vitamin levels, and of course , possible prescription medications (birth controls, anti inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, etc). Sure, it may just be gels...but it wouldn't hurt to check to make sure there's nothiing else going on :)

Very often it's because improper application, improper cure and/or removal. Very allergenic ingredients is another thing but many of these gels are made in China and who are you gonna sue there?

Oh I have seen bad reactions. I just try to be fair.... these products are allergenic, the companies should make it clear how to avoid allergies because usually it's due to improper cure and they don't really teach all this. So that's that. But good brands can be safely used if people use their products correctly. I'm not talking about some of the product from overseas flooding the market with really questionable ingredients. Majority of work that I see out there is really careless. That is not how these products should be used. Allergic reactions can be avoided with proper technique and knowledge of the chemistry behind these products. But people are not interested in chemistry, they are interested in bling only ;) and that's what happens.
