FULL FARM tour and the REAL reason we moved off grid to PORTUGAL!

We are the Scotters! A family of five…oh, and one incredible little cat called Crumbs!
We have always had a dream of showing our children the world, teaching them to leave their comfort zones and always reach for their dreams, and what better way to teach them than to bring them along on our dream.
We sold everything we own and left the UK in December 2021 for a year of travelling in our self-converted Mercedes bus. We had the most incredible year with the children exploring Europe, visiting 10 different countries and along the way, we absolutely fell in love with Portugal.
In November 2022 our dreams came true and we bought our own slice of paradise in Northern Portugal, about 40 minutes from Porto. We have forests and rivers, space and sunshine and have huge plans to create a self sufficient, minimal-impact family homestead, building everything ourselves. We hope that it will teach our children how to build from the earth up, all the while respecting Mother Nature, and that by doing this all together as a family, that they too will aways and forever be brave enough to follow their dreams, no matter how big they might be.

For all the reasons just love your channel and your families positivity! 🏞️🚐🌳 Fifteen years ago my husband and I sold up everything & moved to Spain with our two children, at the time 10 & 13, not off grid but looking for a new life style. Our kids enrolled into the local schools & in no time became fluent in Spanish & Catalan, of course you're living the local life it's not a holiday, but the confidence & experience that living in a different culture brings, is a life lesson. My son who is the eldest went on to work in France & back to Spain, he's now moved permanently to live and work in Northern Norway. My daughter returned to the UK to study at University for 4 years, following on she's now doing a two year Masters degree, now permanently living and working in the UK. My husband and I are planning on moving back sometime next year, seemingly up for one last challenge! It's all been an amazing experience & I wouldn't have changed any of it. Best decision putting the children into local schools. I did the same, 7 years ago and now they are both completely fluent in Portuguese and often top of the class in the language. First two years we all cried alot but now my daughter speaks 3 languages and is about to go to University. Good luck for this wonderful adventure.

It’ll be really great to follow your journey. Great Portuguese kids! My favourite fruit is grapes I have 2 grapevines in my garden in England and I prune them back to just a couple of main branches every autumn. I’m not an expect not sure if that’s the right thing to do but they’re still alive. They grow crazy in the summer maybe each new branch grows up to about 10 foot. Good luck.

I shared this video with my adult children who are living in the US and feeling pretty stressed with their lives at the moment. My husband and I bought an apartment in the Algarve last year, which we absolutely love and are looking forward spending more time at once we’ve retired, but are excited to travel through Portugal and experience as much of the country as possible. Very exciting - you’ve got so many great plans!! Pigs in the brambles are a great idea - if you use a moveable electric fence to keep them in you’ll only need to clear the fence line - the pigs will do the rest, and it will keep your feed bill a bit lower! Another animal that does surprisingly well with some of the younger brambles is sheep, so that might be something to consider too as part of your longer term rotational grazing flock - they don’t tend to root up the ground as much as pigs, so can be useful in a different way.

Hello, yes that’s right, we are hoping the pigs will do most the clearing for us but we hadn’t even thought about sheep for the smaller brambles we will definitely look in to it for the future, as you say pigs can be a bit full on with digging up etc so would be good to rotate! My favourite fruit is chocolate, my favourite vegetable is chocolate, my favourite dessert has chocolate in it. I am just a chocolate fanatic! Lol… Seriously, my favourite is blueberry (especially in pie) then apple (also in pie) lol. Some of my favourite food items are potatoes (yum yum with butter), eggs, cinnamon, corn, asparagus, green beans, carrots, ice cream, my Scottish oat cakes and my liquid stevia (this last item is not really a food item but it lets me drink all the tea I want!
