Whats cool about luke is that he is the embodiment of what made ALL the most powerful jedi so powerful: He had anakin's raw power and force ability. He had Ben Kenobi's discipline to master all types of skills. He had Mace Windu's ability to grace the dark side without joining. He had Qui Gon's view on the living force. He had yoda's wisdom and unyielding loyalty to the light. He had Dooku's ability to lead and inspire. He was the embodiment of Jedi Wisdom.

My favorite part of Legends Luke isn't just his skill with a lightsaber or strength in the Force, but his compassion and hope. No one was beyond redemption in Luke's eyes. To be honest that was perhaps the most greatest part of his character, hell, he even tried to do so with Palpatine in the Dark Empire at first after defeating him, he always looked at the killing option as last resort, in fact there were multiple situations in EU where Luke redeemed multiple of potentially irredeemable people simply because he believed that there was a chance to do so and took it.

Fate of the jedi wasnt perfect but it did help remind you how powerful Luke was in the very first book. He takes out tons of full fledged sith with ease until their leader and her apprentice both fight Luke while Ben gets the ship ready to leave. After already killing about 18 sith, the sith lord (female) looks up at the ship for a split second and is chopped to bits by Luke instantly. Then he spares the apprentice so he can follow her with a blood trail. He was not only powerful but outsmarted sith who suprised him. It was brilliant

Who's the real coward here? Certainly not TLJ Luke, if anything he's the closest thing to an actual Jedi that Luke has ever been. In ANY continuity.

I like this version of Luke more, not because he is more powerful than his counterpart of Disney but because he character was much better When I read his lines I felt that I was really reading the Luke Skywalker of the original trilogy movies. We saw him grow from an inexperienced Jedi to become one of the best Jedi masters in history being as wise as Yoda Qui Gon or Obi Wan. TBH, I don't think Luke's abilities made him overpowered, given that it took him years to develop many of the techniques that he mastered. If he was able to do it from the beginning, that would have made him way OP. Some things to consider when it comes to Luke though is that while he is arguably the perfect hero in Star Wars, you get to see that he is in fact still human, and therefore not infallible. In Episodes 4 and 5 he's cocky and displays a recklessness that Yoda observes upon meeting him for the first time. You see him ignoring the advise of his masters multiple times, he has an "I can't do that" attitude while he's training, and in Return of the Jedi, and when Vader reveals that he is Luke's father, you see the hint of resentment towards Obi Wan for withholding the truth from him. And come Return of the Jedi, even though years had passed and he had obviously grown, you see him struggling with the dark side repeatedly against Vader and repeatedly having to force himself back to the light. Honestly, I would love to see a movie/tv series about the years after Return of the Jedi. In my mind, these stories are canon, and while the Rey series had the potential to be so much better than it was, I feel like the legends stories would be far more interesting given that the stories are already written and therefore limits directors from inserting their own personal biases into the narrative - Like what happened with Finn in Episode 8 (where he was reduced to side character status and all original ideas depicted by Abrams in the force awakens were stripped away).

In my opinion, Luke was set up by George Lucas to be the most powerful Jedi ever. That is why I like the books so much, you really see Luke's power. I like that during the Abeloth episode, he mentions the meeting with Father, Daughter, and Son that ObiWan and Anakin had. I don't really honour Episodes 7 and 8, in fact I have never seen them, as canon, following instead the Legends canon.

To be honest in retrospect, I found that OP Master Luke in the EU ranged between awesome, to insufferable depending on the writer and story. Much like the EU in general really. Sometimes, it was an awesome display of how far he had come and the potential he and the new generation of Force sensitives had. Othertimes, it was basically Gary Stu-ism at its worst. Kind of an interesting case study really over how different fans approached such a revered character. Some did interesting things with him or found a way to challenge him despite his power, and others just sort of couldn't help but deify him. Kinda reminds me of the writing dilemma with Superman that's been in comics forever, some do really neat things with the character while others just don't know what to do with him and end up making him this insufferable unrelatable thing, so stories about him fluctuate wildly between pretty good to terrible. It's difficult to write a powerful character well.

A lot of his ridiculous feats are things that a single author decided he could do, and then never come up/get used again. It's the more reasonable abilities that get used over and over. I guess what I'm saying is that in aggregate Luke was probably ridiculously overpowered, like this video seems to point out. But in (most) of the EU I remember reading, he doesn't really come off as an unbeatable god; just a really powerful master.
