I have a few similar to those but they only have the long light “bar”. They’re for my DOGS when they go potty at night. I put em on as collars and set the color to red. Works fantastic and charges via usb-C. The light part is heavier than the rest so they settle downwards and illuminate the ground for them a bit too.

My headlamp is Petzl Taktikka. It still works after losing it in my backyard for a year. It was in the dirt, rain, mud and snow. It stunk of mold, but I cleaned it up and it's alright now. If you want a good one, can't go wrong with a Petzl.
@Tyan_Nahts6 ай бұрын
Can't say enough good about Petzl, their elevated trades products included. I've had a few Petzl over the years, all stolen at this point though. However, the Coast headlamp I have now is old enough that it didn't have a rechargeable battery available when I bought it so I modded it with a Taktikka battery someone was throwing out. That was 5 years ago and I use it probably 3 times a week (use until it goes dark, 5-6 hours) and it just started showing a red LED when the charge cycle completes. It still charges and still works (the run time is decreasing) it's just letting me know it's not 100% anymore.

That was funny. No sooner did you show us the old style headlamp, Big Clive came to mind because of his reviews and teardowns of them. I concur that folks should check him out if they like to see how electric and electronic stuff looks on the inside. He will usually draw a schematic if you’re willing to wait One Moment, Please. Those flexible COB LED strips do have flex limits. I found that out by tossing one in a toolbox where it got bent a little too sharply and half of it stopped working, so watch out for that. But at ten bucks each, no biggie. One thing I appreciate about the models you showed off is that finally, they don’t have the flash or SOS “functions”. I will be eternally grateful if that never shows up again.
@Masterofcreat6 ай бұрын
It really is a struggle to find a light with just on and off, maybe 50%. But EVERY time they have to add red, red flash, strobe etc.... it is infuriating.
@frankm.55056 ай бұрын
I have the Snap-On Neck light and I’ll never go back from that style. You can wear it on your head but it doesn’t wrap around your whole head so it’s more comfortable and when you’re not using it, it rests on your neck like a pair of over-ear headphones, both lights are adjustable so you can point the lights directly on whatever you need to light up even while it’s on your neck so don’t have to always wear it on your head, each light is removable so you have a flashlight whenever you need, and since it doesn’t wrap around your head with an elastic band, you don’t get that imprint on your forehead from wearing it too. Other brands sell the same style for cheaper than Snap-on like Milwaukee, Husky, etc.

The spread of bright light from those distributed COB LEDs is terrific for arms-length work, but I never buy anything that has an IR wave sensor switch on it. Had two of those fail on different brands and brick the lights, and I'll never trust them again. It's dumb, but the overall best headband light I've ever had is a NEBO pen-sized thing (the Larry NEBO, I think) that I just attached to a headband. It's cheap, light, bright, and utterly reliable. I wish it were USB rechargeable, but it works well enough that I haven't bothered upgrading.

$35 - or more, sometimes - is nuts for these things. I've bought 5 or 6 cheap ones over the last 3 years. In use, they are fantastic for the reasons given towards the end of the video. My only issue has been that, with 3 of them, after about 2 hours total use (using them for perhaps 10 minutes, 10 or 12 times), the on/off switch went bad - pressing it gives you 1 very brief flash, then nothing. Each subsequent press gives you one flash. Not related to battery charge state. They're cheap enough that I don't mind buying several to get around that and I can keep one in each car, one in the bedroom, the shop, etc.
@FunkFPV6 ай бұрын
I think the $35 dollar price point is too high. $12 is borderline for a potential dud. If I find myself using these a lot I might pick up that 6 pack and see what they’re all about.

For a basic headlamp, AAA, three brightness levels, and a flip down red lense, I have used and trusted Petzel brand lights. Specifically I like the Tactika model. Carried and used them on 3 combat deployments and uncountable training evolutions. I keep a Tactika in my EDC bag and use it regularly. I now have a NightBuddy brand and have liked it so far. The run time for me is a little short but being rechargeable makes that less of an issue. I have gone running at night and the wide throw of light makes the road look less weird. I would buy another.

I have an 8 year old Coleman headlamp. (CXS+ 200 I think) Has sensors to near and far beams, night mode /red and crucially has a few click positions to angle downwards which still makes it my most useful headlamp. Shame it takes 3x AAA cells though. I've thought about modding it but the prospect of having an explosion with my forehead as ground zero puts me off...

Got mine from Ali-Express from China for about $3.00 apiece. Liked them so much, I got 3 more for reserve backup. They came without batteries, but I had some old laptop batteries that were no good for laptop use anymore, so I broke them open and took out the 18650 batteries. There were 6 batteries in each pack and each pack rendered 4 good batteries that still had lots of life left in them. Each headlamp takes one battery. I've been using the same batteries in each headlamp for over 3 years and they're still going strong. Neighbors probably think I'm weird since I always have one on my head, but I'm 72 and don't really give a shit what the neighbors think. I don't mind being the weird old guy that everyone leaves alone.

I have one of these that I got for seeing what I'm doing when grilling after dark. I like the even illumination of the COB strip on the front so I don't have to point my head directly where I'm looking (I rarely use the spotlight). One amusing thing that I've noticed with the IR switch. Because it is on the side it tends to get tripped when going through doorways. I don't know what brand mine is (probably one of the Amazon unpronounceable brands), but I know it isn't the Night Buddy version because I don't have the red mode. I can see the red mode of the Night Buddy being useful for astronomers.
@Tbizzh4 ай бұрын
I have three of these. Not night buddy, but... They're probably the same. All three have finicky charging receptacles. Two have delaminated the light strip from the strap. And one is running strong! The wave feature for me feels unnatural. If you do a normal wave it'll turn on and off since the sensor is at the side of your head, not toward the front.
@jacksmith23155 ай бұрын
My boss has bought these a couple times. Somewhere he found 2 for $10 or $14. They are the only headlamps i will actually wear. They arent bulky and actually light a whole area. My only complaints about them is they run out of battery too quickly, and they dont last all that long. Parts of the strip stop lighting, and they light strip starts to peel off. But for only a few bucks, they are worth it. As for the motion sensor, i thought it was really cool, but its super annoying when you're in a confined area like under a car of for plumbers and other trades when your in a tight spot, just turning your head when close to something its turning on and off. But all and all for a cheap little light, they're pretty good. When you say clones or knock offs, i think its more like they come from the same factory and they're all just rebranded. Nightbuddy is the only one I've seen with a brand name actually on the unit itself, but there's so many companies selling the exact samething. I was actually surprised to see the night buddy has red LEDs and only one spot light setting, i think ive seen some that have a strobe setting, which that would be super annoying and useless unless you're lost in the woods at night and trying to get someone's attention

I wouldn't be surprised if a tear down of the knock off showed exactly the same LED strip set in it as in the NightBuddy, including an available 'red' mode. The two may be using different chips. There are enough different light options on the market that they probably using a $0.02 control chip, probably with all numbers scraped off, or under a black blob of epoxy, where the NightBuddy is likely using a well known $0.05 chip. I wouldn't be surprised if BigClive does a teardown, showing the schematics of both the charge control system and the light control portion. (Which may, or may not, be on the same microcontroler chip.)

I need to wear glasses for reading so my safety glasses are also magnified so I pretty much have to wear glasses for a close-up work. So the spotlight doesn't work for me on close up because it does reflect light back but it's fine at distance. The yellow light works fine because it's in front of the glasses of course... What I like about the wizard is that its a nice diffused even light where as most, especially back then, were a highly focused beam. Takes a standard 18650 or 18350 if you go with a smaller one. I know you have plenty of hobbies/collections so you dont need another BUT maybe check them out ;) I should mention I tend to swap the endcap to a non-magnetic one since I get sick of it sticking to a car hood, computer case, server rack, etc. This does mean I swap batteries rather than charging the headlamp itself.
