To be fair, single lines that seem quote like are called a monostich poem. Still poetry.

The person who said she doesn’t understand why someone would break up lines like that does not understand poetry. Even the great Maya Angelou wrote like that and I have a copy of her book written in 1990. To each their own. I’m in the process of writing my poetry book, so your video sheds light on the things that I need to be weary of before publishing it. Thank you for the video. 🫶🏼
@thesoundsofearth44549 ай бұрын
The point I believe is that line break, as any poetic device, has to have meaning and intention that serves the poem. The critique for modern poets is that line break is used to make a quote look like a poem instead of being used to elevate a good poem to be even better. Hope that makes sense! Maya Angelou used line breaks intentionally to make her poetry impactful. Poets like kaur and Hanna seem to use line break without the level of intention of a poet like Angelou
@everynewdayisablessing85098 ай бұрын
Bad poem will not get better JUST by splitting it into many lines. A prose sentence is still a prose sentence, even with line breaks. She was not bashing splitting poems into separate lines, this can be done, but needs to be a well written poetic poem to begin with.

9:50 I wanted to comment that in the intro of milk and honey by Rupi Kaur she stated she was writing about sexual assault that other women went through not necessarily her experience
@everynewdayisablessing85098 ай бұрын
I don't own her book and I'm not going to buy it following so many bad reviews from people who actully love real poetry. I must say I suspected that after watching her perform one of her poems about SA. She read it totally innapropriately, in a cringy sensual way, about act that happened to a little girl and alarm bells started ringing in my head.

Lines breaks can be used to emphasize the thought in a line. Think of it as causing a person to go up or down stairs so that they step more deliberately.

Have you ever heard of a Monostich? It's literally a single line idea or poem. Doesn't have any format. Poetry is also no longer held captive by a specific set of rules for formatting. That's why there are different types of poetry.
