Great video. Love when dealers or show runners give insight on certain aspects of the hobby. I wish someone at shows would do a round table discussion of certain dealers and even bring in long time collectors to discuss shows and the viewpoints of being behind a table and a buyer on the other side. I think people will be shocked what they learn from both sides and I think it would relationships and deals if everyone understood each other. Nice tips man. One of these days I’ll travel up from Brookfield to catch your show

Wow. Fun to watch and great experiencer for someone new to our hobby. First thing I wish I had? An honest mentor. How or what to collect is so important - good for you! My final and simple advice to a newcomer to our hobby? 1. Establish a very narrow FOCUS (will keep you from trying to corner the market on anything and everything). 2. Establish a very strict BUDGET (this will keep you from waking up screaming into the night! Be honest with your mate on budget and don't try to hoodwink them on what one is spending). 3. Never ever, ever, ever, ever break 1 0r 2!!!!

Good video...One thing I would add is do research on and have penny sleeves and top loaders ready. The cards you buy should be protected with both and you should treat them like gold, after all you are buying to either keep or sell. Both are good reasons to have them in the best possible shape you can. I collect Basketball and Football and would consider myself pretty knowledgeable....Even if there is a card of a guy I've never even heard of, it goes into a penny sleeve and top loader whether thats out of a $30 blaster or a $400+ Hobby box. If you want to take it one step further (which I do) is I buy "1 touches" for the cards I hold in the highest regard.

Solid video. You're young, losing money now is actually a great lesson long term. It sounds like you've already absorbed a lot. Don't stress the losses, long term it's nothing. Everything you listed here for cards can be applied to any market (especially stocks) and life in general.

Thanks Will! I appreciate the kind words. I like that mindset a lot, and try my best to stick to it. That’s an interesting point on applying these to any market. I didn’t think of that originally but after looking back that does make sense!

If you get your kids involved, make sure they’re ready for this kind of thing before handing over the reigns to them or even just letting them help you. I remember how carelessly I treated my dad’s 70s and 80s Topps FB cards when I see how my 4 year old is handling his cheap McDonald’s Pokémon cards and I’m like “nope, not happening. No matter how much he begs, it ain’t happening yet.” One of the main things I want to do is build a Time Machine and go back and steal those cards from my 6 year old self when I first inherited them. Honestly, it makes me sick to my stomach every time I look at my 77 Terry Bradshaw and Drew Pearson cards.

Use a pair of scissors to cut at a top corner of a penny sleeve. Cut about a quarter inch down. Now when you put your card in, that second bottom corner of your card wont scrape against the edge of the sleeve. A razor blade is prone to not cutting so well but can still work.

Putting cards in a binder of your favorite team sets is the best way. And the cheaper the better. You dont want to sell your memories. Collecting to sell later is quite simply a form of gambling.

Great video. I think I struggled a lot trying to figure out the cycles of the hobby and the roles everyone plays in it. The other part, as an analytical person, performance doesn’t necessarily relate to value. I think a better reference would be “legacy”, which includes personality. Great video though.

What are you thoughts on ripping? It’s all I’ve been doing with vintage stock and I’m getting worried looking at pop reports.
@carlsoncards
@carlsoncards Жыл бұрын
I originally had a slide in the video discussing it, but when i recorded the first time I felt too “preachy”. My thought is if someone truly enjoys it, then go for it! But the key thing there is I think you have to keep a mindset of it being “for fun”. Especially with modern sets it financially makes no sense vs buying singles. I personally do not partake (it’s just something I don’t enjoy). I get more of a thrill from buying singles and grading myself. But like I said above, to each his own!
@WendyPeffercorn
@WendyPeffercorn Жыл бұрын
@@carlsoncards From my experiences in the past few months, I have really enjoyed ripping. To your point, I didn't study before buying. With little luck, I spent a solid 3 hrs yesterday with trial and error methods to unbrick vintage cards. Unfortunately, this has cost me more than a few hundred dollars now, buying hobby boxes known for bricking. Sending my first bulk submission off to PSA tomorrow. Mostly junk wax baseball with a few Jordans and HOF football players. I now have a massive backlog, using this first submission as a guide on what to expect in the future.

Collect quarterbacks that are popular, get rid of wide receivers, an running backs they don't last long anymore dime a dozen . Popular athletes aka LeBron, Curry, KD these are your money makers. Sell when say teams are heading to super bowl, world series, NBA championship like Patrick mahome cards before and after they win, people are more willing to buy them then aka suckers. This is my tip for new sellers. For collectors buy what you like and enjoy. I got not long ago Marcus Allen rookie, Tim brown rookie and Bo Jackson rookie, this goes against my first thing but back then teams had a somewhat loyalty to players nowadays they'll cut you but like I said I enjoyed this players when I was a kid. Just do what you love and like. Any remember pokemon cards will sell

I've personally sent them in the same order and tend to put the better condition cards in the back. I.e. if you have 3 of the same, sort them by worst to best condition. That's what has seemingly worked the best for me.

I've been selling cards on ebay for a while now and I'd like to branch out. What do you think are some good places on instagram and facebook to sell? Also, how does the payment work, do you send out the card then they use a cash app to pay? Or do they pay first then you send the card?
@carlsoncards
@carlsoncards Жыл бұрын
I really only use eBay or MySlabs unfortunately! If I do happen to sell something direct through Instagram, i tend to just use PayPal and pay the fee to avoid the hassle or any chance of scams occurring. Otherwise if buyers are comfortable with Venmo or Cashapp or PayPal friends and family, then that is usually fine too. But most people tend to want to use PayPal goods and services so they are protected (especially if they haven’t done business with you before)

Tips 1-6 are good, but to clarify on tip #7. Dont watch those negative videos that talk about mystery packs and how they are a rip off or the vids that talk about shill bidding and the comp you would blindly follow are really an inflated number. Just keep my head in the sand and not listen to the ugly side of the hobby? But hey I have hobby friends to talk with and cards to look at so that's cool, smh.
@carlsoncards
@carlsoncards Жыл бұрын
Life is too short to take a hobby too seriously, that is the point I am making to my former self with #7. I don’t disagree that those types of education videos are helpful, my point is more so that I got very sucked into following the hobby drama that really ultimately had nothing to do with me or my experience. The types of videos you listed I agree are helpful and great for learning.
