Nice, my guitar playing also started with One Step Closer! Such a huge influence on me, both the song and the band. I later learned that the intro has some harmonics thrown in, which indeed make it sound more like the original. I guess we never stop learning!

What the holy fuck, I didn't know Krallice made such DSO type music. That was amazing. I had never been the same ever since a friend of my dad's copied Panzerfaust on a CD for me when I asked for something "heavy". Still without a doubt my favorite Darkthrone album. Besides that, easily CoB's whole fucking discography, but especially Hatebreeder.

I was never any good at playing metal but for me the eye-openers were: Spawn of Possession’s Incurso (extreme technicality going hand in hand with careful, rich, and interesting composition), Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s Agorapocalypse (just over the top insane grindcore with good production that really benefits the sound), Napalm Death’s Scum (made me discover extreme music), Slayer’s Reign in Blood (made me realise that some old bands are a hundred times more aggressive than a lot of contemporary bands, and therefore old doesn’t mean “bad” or “for old people only”), Iron Maiden’s Killers (the energy in that is INSANE, and it’s just an extremely captivating album from start to finish), Korn’s self titled (helped me through some really difficult times), Linkin Park’s Meteora (insane energy and flow, two different genres combined to perfection, beautiful songs from start to finish), Peste Noire's 2011 album which name I can never spell correctly (made me realise metal can be bizarre and "weird" without losing its aggression and emotional impact … I'm sure there were more.

Samael's Ceremony, Immortal's Battle, Dimmu Borgir's Enthrone and Cradle of Filth's Cruelty for black metal... later came the more conventional (mainstream) ones... though Battle in the North I think it's in the mainstream area... Also, some Dismal Euphony, Thy Serpent and Catamenia, maybe... But my real "love" is the old school death metal with Brutality's When the Sky turns Black, Konkhra's Sexual affective Disorder, Edge of Sanity's Purgatory Afterglow (more than just death metal in there, I know, but it's one of the first albums I bought), Malevolent Creation's Eternal, Grave's Into the Grave, Asphyx with Last one on Earth and, of course, Death with Leprosy. L.E.: Forgot about Dissection's Storm of the Light's Bane and Limbonic Art's In abhorance Dementia. L.L.E.: Probably I'll remember a lot more, but it's the last edit, I swear. First black metal...-ish, I bought Arcturus with Aspera, and another more obscure album, but it's in that first batch of albums I bought. Ghostorm with Frozen in Fire.

The Black Album and Load were the albums that got me into "heavier" music when I was a teen in the mid 90s. Then it was Rust In Peace, Beneath The Remains, Domination/Covenant, Burn My Eyes and Korn's first album. Nile and Necrophagist introduced me to more brutal/technical death metal in the 2000s and Alive Or Just Breathing got me into Metalcore. Then from there my love for progressive metal formed with Opeth, Dream Theater, Between The Buried And Me and Enslaved who also was the band that made me appreciate black metal more. I know I'm missing a ton but those were the main catalysts that further defined my taste in metal through out the years to where I am today.

Alright here we go, not exactly gonna be in order but screw it, for my metal journey, these are the albums that changed MY life in the 8 years I’ve been listening to it (it won’t be all of them most likely) Disturbed - Ten Thousand Fists: Legitimately the reason I am a fan of metal music in the first place Pantera - The Great Southern Trendkill: The band that solidified my love of metal music (all because of Dragon Ball Z no less) Strapping Young Lad - Alien: The reason I’m into extreme music as a whole, which Strapping was also one of my first bands that I loved funnily enough Torture Killer - Phobia: My first death metal band that I loved Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro: … it’s fucking Anaal Nathrakh, if it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t be as much of a fan of the most abrasive music to ever exist, and I wouldn’t even had had a taste in things like Grindcore or really anything as chaotic Fleshgod Apocalypse - Agony: The reason I know about how to blend chaotic music with soaring symphonies NØNE - The Damp Chill Of Life: DSBM my beloved Cryptopsy - None So Vile: The ultimate template for how death metal should be imo, as well as one of my favorite albums in existence Follow Their Lead - The Blackhole EP: The first djent release to completely alter my perception of the genre, simply due to it being orchestral djent (WE NEED MORE SYMPHONIC DJENT DAMN IT) Heaven Shall Burn - Iconoclast: I would die in battle to this album, as it is easily the most epic album to ever exist, and also one of my favorite albums ever made Uneven Structure - Februus: The second album to alter my perception of djent, and is the album that blew me away in the most spectacular fashion, with me even crying during the song Frost just from the part near the end, and this is another one of my personal favorite albums ever made Fear Factory - Demanufacture: Got me into a type of industrial metal that I wish was more prevalent than it is (thank god for bands like Sybreed, who I wish were still around) Gorgasm - Destined To Violate: The entire reason brutal death metal has become my favorite sub genre in metal

Stryper's "Soldiers Under Command " introduced me to metal at the age of 7, started it all. Metallica's black album was what made me a full-blown metalhead. Children Of Bodom's "Hatebreeder" introduced me to melodic death metal (my favorite genre) as well as my favorite band of all time. Fear Factory's "Demanufacture" got me into industrial metal and introduced me to a whole new riffing style. W.A.S.P.'s "The Crimson Idol" reignited my love of classic 80s metal while also being the first concept album I fell in love with. In Flames' "Reroute To Remain" deepened my love of melodeath while opening the door to metalcore. The Halo Effect's "Days Of The Lost" reignited my love for melodeath after the breakup of Bodom and death of Alexi. Insomnium's "Shadows Of The Dying Sun" completely changed my perspective on blending "heavy" and "melodic" and changed how I approach composition. DragonForce's "Inhuman Rampage" introduced me to what I now know as power metal and inspired me to improve as a lead player (and no, I didn't discover it through Guitar Hero). Omnium Gatherum's "Beyond" introduced me to a much more emotional side of melodeath and the idea that even extreme metal can be emotionally moving. They're now my favorite melodeath band.

Nice touch going really heavy on the silly faces during the Devin Townsend segment lol Which is a nice coincidence because City by Strapping Young Lad is one of those albums for me. It didn't really influence my playing all that much but it did augment my writing in the sense that I'm more confident smash-cutting from catchy and groovy to utter spastic chaos after hearing it. It's true impact, for me, is more thematic and holistic. It's such an ugly, unrefined expression of deeply irrational but deeply potent juvenile *rage* that tempers its angst only by being directed largely inwards. Raw, violent, explosive id with no pretension in sight. It revels in the fact that being vulnerable and honest means quite literally exposing your insides to the world and that is inherently painful and gross. Almost nothing is quite as good at doing what City is doing. It's not my all time favorite album, it's not my most listened to, but it's way up there regardless and is certainly in the running for the most personally impactful album for me.

Here's mine: Metallica - Kill 'Em All: The one that started it all for me. I was 8 or 9, and I actually found the band's history to be super interesting at the time. Nirvana - Nevermind: This is what drew me to a specific instrument, being drums. Technically it was watching their live performances on KZbin, but Nirvana's energy on stage caught my attention, specifically Dave Grohl. I saw him beating the shit out of his drums and said "looks easy, I could probably do that" KoRn - KoRn: Got me into nu metal, which I still love the bounciness of even todsy, despite also liking "real metal." This was about a year after getting into Nirvana, and during that year I spent my time trying to find drummers that hit their drums really hard, because I was twelve and that was interesting to me. Someone mentioned KoRn, and I checked them out. Not only did David Silveria hit really hard, but his drumming also had this groove to it that drew me in, and all of the sudden ghost notes were kind of cool to me. Godsmack - Faceless: This was the first time I saw a drummer have real stage presence. Again, this was more from live shows, but seeing how Shannon Larkin would flail around and still hit everything perfectly was insane to me at the time. The last two drummers hit hard, but they didn't have the stage presence that Shannon did. Slipknot - Iowa: This was how I got into blast beats and double bass. I had heard them before, but I didn't care before then because you can't hit as hard when you play fast. But now, I needed to find the fastest drummers out there. Problem being, all the ultra fast ones didn't have a vibe to them, they just sounded robotic. Cryptopsy - Blasphemy Made Flesh: This was how I got into extreme metal. The first time I heard Defenestration, with that non distorted ska sounding riff going into that insane hyperblast, I literally burst out laughing. It was the singular most insane thing I had heard up to that point, and I loved it, mostly because of the drums. Gorguts - Obscura: This showed me that there was more to death metal than gore or satan. The lyrics actually meant something, and I could relate to them. Also, I've started paying more attention to guitar/bass because of this album. Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments: got me out of the whole fast thing. I still love crazy fast drumming, but there were a good two years where I literally could not get into a band if there were no blast beats. The Melvins changed that. I listened to this album super loud while walking home from school in the rain, and it just fit perfectly. Mastodon - Remission. I had heard of Mastodon probably before I had even heard of Cryptopsy, but since there wasn't blast beats I didn't care. Now that I'm out of that, I've realized the beauty of this album. I like the mix of shorter, crushing songs, as well as the longer, more progressive ones. Also, Brann Dailor may not do blast beats (except for in their demos and his previous bands) he is still a phonomenal drummer. The constant fills are chaotic, similar to how Flo Mounier's hyperblasts are chaotic, but thry're very tasteful and well executed.

For me, these are the albums that changed my life: Death Angel - The Dream Calls For Blood. The first metal album I listened to and headbanged to, and really the reason I started honing my guitar skills. Those riffs are tough as nails and solos are insane. After all these years, I still can't play any of these solos. I didn't try that hard tho. Isis - Panopticon. When I first listened to this album, my perspective on metal completely shifted. I realized music doesn't have to be fast and aggressive to be good. It doesn't even have to be technical to be complex. It is somewhat of an antithesis to a usual approach of many prog bands. Instead of intentionally making it more complex to convey an idea, instead it just lets you drown in atmosphere. Yeah, I'm a huge fanboy. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - F#A#∞. Just like Panopticon by Isis, but with much less emphasis on guitars at all. It is so weird. You can listen to it all you want, but you can really experience it only once. This album marked a complete shift in my taste. A lot of metal bands try a bit too hard to be "brutal", fast or technical, like an endless competition with limited artistic value. It is not an inherently bad thing, it just leads to being boring after a while. Title Fight - The Last Thing You Forget. Power chord assault with emo attitude. Really helped me cope with my mental issues. It isn't really unique in terms of what it does musically, but lyrically it is one of the best punk albums. Very poetic despite being somewhat in-your-face with themes. At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul. Riffing style so iconic it was ripped off to shreds by a bunch of bands. Do I need to say more? One of very few death metal bands aside from Death that I like. Influenced my playstyle greatly. And the last, but not least important album to me actually isn't rock/metal. It is an electronic album. Amplified Sound - Drawing the Rainbow. This album was sort of like a bridge for me between metal and electronic music. It doesn't feature guitars, vocals or anything remotely close. It is really your average trance album. Yet it is very similar to Isis and GY!BE. It takes a very similar approach of letting you drown in atmosphere, and does that with synths. It works beautifully and finds some creative uses for many natural noises. Just like GY!BE album, you can only experience it once. If you want to listen to it, do it at night, turn off all the lights (even the smallest ones, like a charging LED on laptops), turn off the notifications, put down your phone, lie down in bed, find your most comfortable volume and position, and don't move. Don't drink or smoke in process, there is no need for substances at all. Trust me, it is almost magical experience. That's all I got on my favorite albums. If you read so far, thank you. I hope you enjoyed this long-ass comment and found something new to listen to
