Per Kish: the commentary could have also noted that according to Sumerian and Akkadian myth Kish was the first city state to re-establish kingship post the great flood. It therefore was at the foundation of sovereignty claims.

Captain Moroni is named after Moron from Ether. The trailing "i" in Hebrew is a negation of the original name. Moron was a failed general who let secret combinations beat him. Another example of this is in Genesis 17:15 "And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be."

Wow interesting... what do you mean by the "The trailing "i" in Hebrew is a negation of the original name?" Are you proposing he was named in subversion to Moron? Moron being a corrupt general that loved violence, secret combinations, and evil and Moroni being a righteous general who loved peace, truth, and goodness?

I always thought that, with Moroni wanting to save space on his limited number of plates, writing "brother of Jared" was just significantly shorter than Mahonrimoriancumr. It's cool to think that maybe there was more to it than that.

My brother speaks and writes in Arabic. There is a character, he says, like a comma, that you put at the end of a name to indicate "the brother of...". It would be something like "Jared," Given the difficulty of engraving on the plates (Jacob 4:1-3), it would make sense to avoid having to write out something like Mahonrimoriancumr over and over. This could be in addition to the above video reasons.

The allegory of the olive trees is a great faith affirming section in Jacob chapter 5 because of the fact that the Lord of the vineyard made plans upon plans all over his vineyard not just with one tree or one area. He was cultivating all of the people on earth with some of them being righteous (good fruit) and some falling for sin (bitter fruit).

I am a huge Heartlander who believes the BofM events began in North America and not South or Central America. This video was well done as it describes the language similarities of the Old and New Worlds. I however believe those similarities happened beginning in North America. I believe the Jaredites had the Priesthood through Shem and they landed in North America. I also believe the Lehites likely landed in the pan handle of Florida. I enjoyed the video.

I wonder if part of his lack of name is meant to be similar to the many nameless women in the scriptures. Many people like to say that the women weren’t seen as important because there’s not many and the few that are there are unnamed. But would you say that the brother of Jared wasn’t important? Not a chance. Yet he was unnamed. There are so many people who have done incredibly important things that went unnamed in history. I’d say this is a significant reminder of that.

While no evidence, internal or external, can take the place of a spiritual witness because a spiritual witness is from God and motivates the receiver to righteousness -- temporal evidence can give intellectual support to spiritual conviction. It is not one piece or set of pieces but the accumulating mass of evidence that gives support to the Book of Mormon. At some time in the future, the Book of Mormon will be proven true temporally as well as spiritually, but that time has not come because the Book of Mormon, as President Benson said, acts like a sieve, separating those who believe in the spiritual witness from those who will not receive it.

I don’t understand how the Jaredites language shares words with other ancient languages if their languages were confounded so they could not understand each other. Though it is difficult to understand how that happened, did everyone just wake up one speaking different languages?? I thought that meant the Jaredites kept the “original” language, maybe the pure adamic language. Are you suggesting they still shared a common language?

I'm confused about Comron. My scriptures say "Comnor" and even the pronunciation guide says "Comnor" which shows in the manuscript as well, and you say that that's an error. Where are we getting "Comron" from, and why does it still say "Comnor" in the Book of Ether?
@emersonfry1927
@emersonfry1927 4 сағат бұрын
Check out the Analysis of Textual Variants of the Book of Mormon by Royal Skousen. He's reviewed every word in every edition of the BoM, including the manuscripts. Here's his commentary on Ether 14:28: The printer's manuscript clearly reads Comron both times in Ether 14:28. The 1830 compositor, however, set the name as Comnor, which as been retained throughout the textual history. We have already noted that in both manuscripts Oliver Cowdery frequently wrote his n's as r's and vice versa (see, for instance, the discussion under Mosiah 2:15-16). Thus it is possible that the name here in Ether 14:28 could have theoretically been one of four possibilities: Comron, Comnor, Comnon, and Comror. There is only one instance where Oliver mixed up mr and mn, namely, in the fifth occurrence of the Zerahemnah in the original manuscript (in Alma 43:53). There he initially spelled the name as Zerahemrah, but then he immediately overwrote the r with an n (see line 14 on page 311' of the original manuscript). For all other (extant) occurrences of Zerahemnah, in both manuscripts, this name was correctly spelled the first time. Thus there is not much evidence that the spelling in the printer's manuscript could be an error for Comnon, Comror, or Comnor. Comparing the spellings Comron and Comnor with other Nephite names and words in the Book of Mormon, we find examples ending in either -ron or -nor; in the following list, the names and words that have an internal mr or mn sequence are set in bold: Amaron, Ammaron, Ammoron, Amoron, 𝐄𝐦𝐫𝐨𝐧, Moron, Parhoron, Siron, 𝐀𝐦𝐧𝐨𝐫, 𝐚𝐦𝐧𝐨𝐫, 𝐊𝐢𝐦𝐧𝐨𝐫 Thus there are three examples of -mnor and one of -mron. There is also one name ending in -mnon, namely, Shemnon, but none ending in -mror. Moreover, none of these examples show any textual variation with respect to the n and the r. All of the argues here in Ether 14:28 that the earlier Comron is definitely possible (it matches Emron) and should therefor be adopted in the critical text. Summary: In accord with the reading in the printer's manuscripte, restore the spelling Comron for the name of the hill in Ether 14:28.

As to why the Church hasn't made this correction, I'm not really sure. There are many changes from the earliest text that have been made, many of them deliberate, some not, that the Church has decided not to correct. In this particular case, I suspect that it's such a small error and irrelevant to any doctrinal issues and so not worth correction.

It is only in recent centuries that the proliferation of world travel and knowledge of other cultures around the world has made it possible for people on opposite sides of the world and in far flung places to be on the same page with regards to religious worship. Even in the early Christian church around the eastern Mediterranean, it was a constant challenge to keep everyone on the same page and being subject to the same set of church authorities. Then, by the time the Roman Empire split and then collapsed, there were different church leaders in Rome vs. Constantinople, and then in subsequent centuries there were further splits from those central authorities eventually leading to all the different Christian sects of today. In the ancient world before the middle ages, it would have been virtually impossible for 2 different religious groups, one in the Americas and one in Palestine, to be in sync with each other, so it makes perfect sense to me that prophets in the Old vs New world during those times would be independent of each other, and would each receive revelation pertinent to their society and culture only, and/or to a future society that was to have their words also. In modern days, I know of no other church that has current 'prophets' in the same sense as our faith (except certain earlier spinoffs of our faith, but those in very much in the minority and are outliers). We also don't believe that we have a monopoly on revelation and that other religious believers can have personal revelation from God if they sincerely seek it, which would be pertinent for their own sphere of influence.

I have wondered that as well. I think that there are some.people around the world that have dreams & visions that line up with Christianity, but only one prophet holds the Priesthood keys necessary to lead, guide & direct Christ's restored church. That's Russell M. Nelson. ❤

I'm a little surprised! When I joined the Church 35 years ago, I was taught that the name of the brother of Jared was known by Joseph Smith who revealed it and that it was long, unusual and hard to remember, write, or pronounce, so he was just identified by his relation to someone with an easy to remember name. I just can't imagine any other reason being considered when it was already known. But it is great to hear of the connections of the Jaredite names with the Nephite names. Though I have never heard that the Nephite names with evil connotations by deeds, came from the Mulekites. It is never said how they could know that. But we do know that Coriantumr did find the Mulekites and lived with them for 9 months before dying of his war wounds. Incidentally I believe that he must have mated with some of the Mulekite women to have passed on his genes for size since there were many Jaredites who were considered as giants. After the Mulekites mingled with the Nephites we hear of some of the large and mighty men who were of renown and mostly evil men. One of them was Coriantumr who dissented from the Nephites and fled to the Lamanites to stir them up against the Nephites. He was the one who led the Lamanite armies around through the river valley that constituted the pass that ran from the sea west through the Andes to the interior jungles where they moved unseen to arrive at Zarahemla and took it by surprise. Capt Moroni later built a fort on the mountain top (now known as Machu Picchu) overlooking that river valley so the Nephites could be warned if the Lamanites tried it again.

Not trying to troll here, Akkadian is a Semetic language and Sumerian is not. The Jaredites would have been more closely aligned with Sumerian than Akkadian since Akkadian was spoken around 300 - 100 BC. The Jaredites would have been more like 2000 BC. Any Akkadian derived names in the Book of Mormon would more likely have had ties with the Lehites or Mulekites than with the Jaredites. A stronger correlation in the Book of Ether would have been Sumerian derived names than Akkadian derived names.
@philandrews2860
@philandrews2860 Күн бұрын
I think your 300 BC number is off by a zero. Akkadian is much more ancient than 300 B.C. and was contemporary with Sumerian. Akkadian dates to around 2600 B.C. in its earliest attested form. You are correct though that Sumerian was unrelated and seems to be a language isolate (not related to any other known language). I suspect that the people of Jared spoke possibly Sumerian but with loan words from Egyptian and Akkadian, especially names. It's also possible that their main language was Akkadian, but I think Sumerian is more likely. Jerry Grover has done some excellent research into Jaredite names also and has come up with some plausible Sumerian meanings for many names. His books are available for free download on his bmslr site. Sumerian began to be replaced by Akkadian around 2000 B.C., give or take. There was a famine in Mesopotamia around 2200 B.C. when many cities were abandoned. It's possible that is when Jared and his people left, and might also help explain why they left. It could also fit with the language being 'confounded', since Sumerian was gradually replaced by Akkadian around that same time, along with the scattering of people due to the famine.

The real reason the brother of jareds, name, was never in the Book of Mormon is because as the writer started engraving his name, he realized how many times he would have to engrave his LONG name and said, "screw that! I'll just refer to him as the brother of jared. " 🤣😂🤣 True story 😂

How could Joseph Smith come up with the name kish? The video literally tells you its in the Bible.

I enjoyed the images and appreciate the research that went into the creation of this video. The Book of Ether is spiritually enlightening. However, I found it difficult to understand the presenter. I have empathy for anyone who is presenting for the first time. I hope you see my comments as constructive criticism offered in an effort for improvement on your future videos and not a destructive criticism of your work.

Claim Ether has (loose) connections to ancient peoples and places ✔️ Completely disregard that the Biblical (and BoM) story of the Tower of Babel was ideological myth ✔️✔️✔️

We believe the Tower of Babel was not a myth but historical fact. Hence our take on it. Of course, if you believe that the story of the Tower of Babel was just a myth, then you will not see the other things in this video as we do. In the end, we will be able to see which things in the scriptures were metaphorical and which really happened. Then we can sit down and learn from each other.

The narrator suggests donating to further the proclamation of the Gospel. I agree. Mormons should concentrate more on the Gospels of the 4 witnesses to Christ's life here on earth and their eyewitness written accounts. Those are the ACTUAL Gospels. Those should be the standards for living and experiencing divine revelation. The New Testament Gospels and the epistles should have the preponderance of study given to 'them', not the Book of Mormon. Put the horse before the cart, the way it is supposed to be, not the other way around. Would I rather place my trust in men who actually walked and lived with Jesus Christ, or someone who had a revelation given to him by an angel almost 2,000 years later? (Have these great heaps of dead bodies ever been found?)

Non-LDS christian here. I'd argue Kish does not means anything because, as said in the video, it appears in the Old Testament as King Saul's father
@theunepicgamer3066

It does mean something though, it’s an ancient Sumerian name title for king, the use of it with other letters attached in the Book of Mormon is consistent with records from the ancient Sumerian cultures. I doubt Joseph could’ve known this, maybe he was secretly incredibly educated or very lucky tho
@arttrumbo9496

So you think all of this is a lucky coincidence? That Joseph Smith took the name from King Saul's father, implementing it into a culture he invented with close ties to mesopotamia (because they came from babel at the confounding of the languages) and it's just a coincidence that the name Kish happens to have an origin far more ancient than Saul's father from the very land that the Jaredites were said to have come from?
@philandrews2860
@philandrews2860 Күн бұрын
Well the Akkadian language can be considered ancestral to Hebrew, or at least close to ancestral, and the Hebrews, through Abraham, inherited the Akkadian linguistic and cultural background from his homeland which was in that area (Chaldean and Akkadian are equivalent). We don't know why Saul's father was named Kish, but it could easily be an ancestral name passed down through the centuries from its earlier derivation in the area of Sumer, from the Akkadians and/or Sumerians. I believe that the people of Jared and later, Abraham, both inherited the same ancient religious tradition that ultimately derived from Adam and Eve through Noah and other early patriarchs.

There are so many evidences in the Book of Mormon if one has eyes to see. There are so many strangely worded passages, or expressions that nobody even in the 1800s, relying upon their own wisdom would write into a story…like the Brother of Jared…who would write a major character this way - a total departure from the style of the rest of the book? Every knee shall bow. Every tongue shall confess. Doubt not because ye see not. The Book is true and there is real power in it.
