"March comes in like a lion, out like a lamb" is a proverb. It means that, when march arrives, it's still harsh winter, but by the end of the month the gentle spring has arrived. It perfectly describes how the show is about a depressed teenager warming up to his new family. This is also why he lives in "march town" and the sisters live in "june town". I think its an excellent title if you're familiar with the proverb.

@@iankphone I think it's a bit harsh to call people illiterate because they don't know a proverb. I consider myself pretty well-read and my co-workers call me the walking google but I'd never heard of it. Everyone has different things that they have specialized knowledge about. It's definitely a cool concept for the show name but maybe they could've included the proverb in the synopsis of the show?

A bit funny if you remember the episode "Silver Wings" when Junko was talking about how people misinterperet proverbs. Honestly, even as a diehard fan of the show, I didn't realize this. That's really cool. I always knew the March in the English Title was based around the beginning of Spring, and the idea of surviving a winter, but never really figured out the Lion part.

"March Comes in Like a Lion" is actually rather appropriate, since the full phrase is "March comes in like a lion, and out like a lamb." Namely, the idea that it refers to a time where despite the snowy coldness that exists, it will eventually give way to sunshine and warmth. EDIT: WOW! I feel like "The town in which only I don't exist" to "The town from which I've been erased" to "Erased" is a very easy and direct pipeline. It's certainly a lazy title, but it serves its purpose well, sounds intriguing enough and most importantly isn't a full sentence.
@st.lucient4755
@st.lucient4755 Жыл бұрын
I would've compromised to at least "The Erased Me" or maybe bit more literal with "Me Who Was Erased" It may sound odd at first, but it makes sense as a sentence and piques passerby's interest. "Erased" is just too common and easy to forget or miss entirely. To quote the video, it's like translating "Yuri On Ice" to "Iceskating Males", or even worse, "Iceskate". Takes away all the nuances, left with only the bare bones.
@elysahatestostudy9364

@@st.lucient4755 I think a perfect compromise would be something like Re;Zero, (e.g. Erased: The town in which only I am missing) with both a shorthand and an explainer, but overall I prefer a simple title that fits within the broader context of the story over a full one-sentence synopsis. And no, there is literally no way in which Erased doesn't fit the story that wouldn't apply to The town in which only I am missing. They have the exact same relevance to the story (as shown in the OG comment), saying anything else is just being a cunt because you don't like it.

Sorry, but I feel like "The Erased Me" would probably be the worst timeline for an English title. lol As for possible title name ideas that are impossible to retroactively impose, I agree with Elysa that full sentences can easily sound bad in English, however short or incomplete ones are fairly common. " I am legend" for example isn't really a correct or complete sentence, but it makes a good title. I personally would make the title "I'm Erased" then subtitle it "The town where I don't exist" , as if it was a book, but I'm not sure how good that format works outside of books.

I actually think march comes in like a lion it’s a genius title. In the English language there’s this old saying that goes “march comes in like a lion, out like a lamb” that means march starts cold and harsh as winter, but ends on a more gentle, spring weather. Which is pretty fitting to the story in my opinion. I learned it from a famous 60s/70s era rock song but I really can’t remember which song was. Anyway, just a silly little fact. @@iceloveanime I never for a second though the Japanese author chose to reference this old saying in the English translation of the title. What I meant to say is that it’s a quite clever and rather fitting translation. Translating is a quite hard work that requires creativity and mental elasticity, especially between English and Japanese since the two languages have nothing in common. And it’s probably one of the best attempt at a rather cool sounding translation for a Japanese title. As much as it would have been more true to the original title, “the lion of march” does sound a bit silly to me. But I understand it’s not the same for everyone.

So about Durarara!!- Turns out the explanation is a lot more simple than anyone could guess. But in my English translation of the first light novel, at the back, Narita explains how he got the title. He was speaking with his editor because he was finishing up writing the manuscript. His editor said that they need an official title for marketing. Narita said that the only thing he could come up with was "Du... Durarara?" The editor actually liked how mysterious it sounded but wanted to know how to handle the English spelling. Narita said he had no answer for him because he didn't expect him to accept it. The editor then asked if he was going to put in an exclamation mark on there like "Baccano!" Yet Narita still had no answer because he didn't expect him to accept it. Yet without thinking, he replied, "Let's put two on there. Bam-Bam!" Direct quote from the book: "After a long silence, I heard the scratching of someone writing on paper, then my editor exploded with laughter on the other side of the phone. 'Ha-ha-ha-ha! When you write this out, it looks so stupid! Let's go with that then!' That was the birth of Durarara!!- but as for what it means I'm still not quite sure." So that's how my favorite anime got its title. 😂

As a manga reader who was up to date early, the title 'The Town Where Only I'm Not There' brought a lot of mystery to the story since you're not exactly sure what it's referring to. That is until you finally catch up to the 'event' and suddenly it makes perfect sense. It was very specific foreshadowing that was incredibly satisfying once it happened. According to Wikipedia: The English title March Comes In Like a Lion is written on the cover of the manga. Although Umino had not seen the 1992 film March Comes in Like a Lion, the movie poster and the title of the movie left an impression on her: "A girl with a black haircut is holding a half-eaten ice cream in her mouth." This phrase is from the British weather proverb "March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." In addition, the supervisor, Manabu Senzaki, commented that the shogi rankings begin in June, and the final game for promotion and demotion is held in March, so the professionals become lions in March. Although it has commonly been claimed that the title "Durarara" is an onomatopoeia for the "revving of an engine," Narita states specifically in the first light novel volume that the name means absolutely nothing. He had been editing the finished draft of his book, when his editor called. When prompted for a title, Narita "...just randomly gave a name, 'Du...Durarara?'" Upon hearing this, his editor responded with a positive remark as he liked ambiguous titles."

I'm gonna play devil's advocate for two of these. For "Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun", there aren't many things that are, well, toilet-bound. So I can understand the confusion there. For titles with an X in them, yeah the X is *supposed* to be silent but they could just not have it at all. If it's used in place of a space you're just adding unnecessary confusion where a space would do the job just fine. Also the silent K in knife isn't the best example because it's at the start of the word unlike the X in these titles. Probably should've given an example with a silent letter in the middle somewhere to better illustrate your point.

As a guy who grew up listening to US Public Radio and in particular "The Thistle and the Shamrock," I remember being taken off-guard by Clannad because I was expecting something very fantasy-oriented in an Irish or British Islands-inspired setting, especially because "Clannad" not only sounds very Irish/Scottish traditional, but it is also the actual name of an extremely popular Irish folk music group. They apparently got the name by shortening their original name, "Clann as Dobhar," Gaelic for "Family from Dore," which... just describes the band. They're all family, and they were all from Dore in Donegal.

Personally when it comes to the X debate, even if it’s an excess “word” that’s meant to be silent I’m just gonna pronounce it anyway because it feels funny to me reading it otherwise Plus sometimes when x is used between two nouns it usually means to come together or be multiple, which is kinda why it’s used for shipping in fandom, for hunter hunter it kinda makes sense since it’s two hunters but for spy family it doesn’t really work since the entire family isn’t spys, it’s a spy joining a family

Unnecessary letter that just confuses actual English speaker, and I can see why it'll never go away as they will ALWAYS pronounce the X as it make sense. Like X File... And it's kinda incomparible to silent letters of a word cuz its 1) of a language that pronounces the letter(s) differently than another's), and 2) silent letters in general are a part of a single word, as opposed to a singular "x" stylized to look like itself or the multiplication symbol.

Like I literally said that it's wrong to judge someone for pronouncing a specific letter in a way that suited to their native tongue (if they DONT know any better), or did you simply not read nor comprehend what I wrote???
@cake6377
@cake6377 Жыл бұрын
@@officialkazekata I did read it, but I don't agree with it being different from silent letters because since I learn English as a second language I just conclude that it... changes pronunciation to suit people's taste? Full disclosure I'd pronounced it with "ex" too, but it's also valid for me why it can be silent, I know full well it's a symbol. I understand there are different ways to pronounce English words because the words have roots from different languages but when I learn I just learn by heart the sounds, so English pronunciation is pretty much just a random mess that I can somehow remember? I guess it's different if you learn it academically. For me it's just oh, so this is/can be a different sound here, noted.

I will contest Spider, actually. The "so [inadvisable action], so what?" is a not-uncommon phrasing of defiant challenge. A line from The Birdcage that gets thrown around a lot in my house is "so you broke the toast, so what?". Shifting "so what" to the beginning of the title for brevity maintains the vibe of the title, but it loses the matter-of-factness of the spider part, and in turn the defiance of the "so what?"

Never will I ever get over the fact they call metante konan “case closed” in English. I did a language exchange thing when I was in high school. Normally would have taken me to Japan but Covid happened. Anyways, I already knew quite a bit, but they did have a Japanese teacher come and teach us basics to make sure everyone was up to speed. She was teaching us to say “… ga suki desu” or “I like…” her example was “metante konan ga suki desu.” She asked us if we know what that is and I distinctly remember how confused she looked when I told her it was “case closed” in English. Like not only is it dumb af but it can also cause further language barriers when they translate stuff like this.
