it honestly kinda relieves me when i find out that PTA drew concrete inspirations for his films. instead of placing directors on these unattainable pedestals, id prefer to really nitty-gritty analyse them and find out what exactly makes their craft so great. and then distribute that information in order to have tons of people making great cinema

I fart at the general thesis here. I think it's great to consider influences on a movie--but the notion that one can't fully understand or appreciate a film without knowing its influences I don't buy. I'm happy that you got a lot out of your own study of these films and how they enriched your viewing of this movie. Long time since the Weaver Street days! I kind of saw that place as being like a cult...James as the L Ron Hubbard to my Joaquin Phoenix.

Awesome video. I love PTA, he's truly in a class all his own among his generation of filmmakers. All great artists have their influences. In some ways, all of art is a continuous reaction to/re-purposing of what has come before.
@mishtaromaniello82956 жыл бұрын
It does upset me when a film can outright steal moments or lines previously used in other films. It doesn't upset me when they are compiled together to make a totally and captivating original story. Everything is inspired by something we've experienced, we're not born with ideas. We have five senses for a reason. However, it's only claimed to be original when the source material is either lost to history or seen by little people. Great video essay, I think every other director, even those who don't share the style of PTA's filmmaking, all do the exact same thing.

The Master's main influence is Clockwork Orange. It has the exact same structure. Act 1 - Roaming wild, bit of the old in out. Act 1 ends on the wily ways hitting back. Act 2 - The wildness in the character is tamed by modern scientific methods. Conflict between id and superego. Act 3 - They are cured...or are they. Both Freddie and Alex at the end are freed from their respective prisons by embracing not only the id of their origins, but the ego of society; which they now can use to their advantage. In Alex, that is to get away with his rampages (I was cured). With Freddie it is to find a sexual partner/mother.

Great work, and great ending of the clip - very subtle.There will be Blood and the Master are his best films, without any question, and I also prefer the Master more.It is very silly when people compare him to Nolan, Cameron etc - he is above them. As e.g. Tarkovsky or Bresson are above PTA. Or wait - the difference in class is even greater than that.Cool video.

The best film of this decade and probably century for me. I would say it has an influence of Eyes Wide Shut, in the undercurrent themes, the vague narrative, the multiple meanings and hermetic nature of the film... Huge work of art.

"Fandor" rarely delivers at this altitude. I grew up in Hollywood, my Mom and Dad both cinefiles, historians. PTA is of that kind, not film school illuminated, but a true lover of cinema. For anyone his age to grasp the "weight" of that mantle is extraordinary.

A reason (main one for me) is that the movie is shot on film. If it was not, it wouldn’t look half as good visually. His recent movie the phantom tread has the style of this too. Both movies are just incredible to look at. All down to excellent framing and being shot on film. Digital can be good I. E John wick 1&2 being best examples of digital. But movies shot on film will always look jaw dropping when in the right hands. Most kids now think that grain is distortion or results of a bad transfer when a old movie is released more so in 4K. But film is the best thing for movies. That’s also why breaking bad looks so yummy too

@@AbdulwahabAA that's very interesting to know, breaking bad just didn't strike me as film, it looks very digital compared to true detective s1. but you're correct, I've looked it up and it was indeed shot on film. better call saul, however, wasn't, and the only flashforward shot on film is the one in season 4, to match breaking bad cinematography as you said, according to imdb and the bcs's bts in the bluray. by the way, Madmen is my all-time favorite show!

you keep using that word "inspiration." it doesn't mean what you think it means. there is a difference between unconsciously using other works, stealing from them or being inspired by them. there is no question knowing anderson purposely used dialogue and shots from other movies takes away from the originality of the master. i'm not sure how anyone could say otherwise. the master is still an engrossing film, an almost endlessly interesting film, and that takes talent on the part of many, but it's not fully anderson's by a long shot. at least he admits it.
