I love my Z30 and Z50, and I use the maybe 75% of my photography. I use the Viltrox lenses with them. You brought up a point of weight, I didn't have back surgery but I am 66 with arthritis in my back. The size of the two bodies with the viltrox lenses have been a life saver for me. But your one comment of not missing full frame is something I have been experiencing. I have a Z5, and I am using it less and less because the other two bodies do such a great job. Thanks for sharing, hope your back gets better...

This is why I wish more manufacturers would offer 1.4 lenses for smaller sensors. Yes, on F mount I could use a full frame 1.4 lens on a cropped sensor body, but I’m lugging around a much larger, heavier lens designed for a larger sensor. Love how small these are.

Paying a lot for full frame glass too that the APS-C sensor can't even read. The camera company wants to get you locked in to their system if you decide to go full frame in the future.

When I purchased my D7500 w the 18-140mm, I also ordered the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 DX & the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DX Art lenses. When I bought my Z50, I made sure to get the FTZ adapter as well. Now everyone else will know how great Sigma dx lenses are on Nikon Mirrorless APS-C cameras.

I picked up my z30 for a lightweight travel kit vs my big Z6… ending up using it most days as it’s a lot of fun. While I can use my bigger FF lenses on it I’ve been looking for some decent DX primes… I know Viltrox is out there it glad to see sigma as well. When I tried Viltrox they were still a little heavy for “C” lenses. Might have to get a hold of one of these before some international travel in June. Great overview! And yah jpeg is just fine. Nikon processing is great with little tweaks in Lightroom

It is so great to see Sigma making lenses for the Nikon Z mount. I am interested to see what they come up with for the full frame models as well. Photography is expensive and having a 3rd party making AF lenses helps take the edge off. Sorry to hear your back is injured again, hopefully this is only a minor setback.

Looking forward to picking one or two up over time….part of why I bought into the Z system was its light weight. I have steered away from the f2.8 FF trilogy lenses. I own two FF Z cameras, but my “fun/family” camera is the Zfc. I am particularly interested in the Sigma 16mm. While I have the terrific 20mm f1.8 S Z lens, its quite large on a Zfc, and only equivalent to 35mm FF. That 24mm equivalent, at f1.4, while not breaking the bank, will happily join my small Nikkor primes; 26mm f2.8, 28mm f2.8 and 40mm f2. A handy, light, walk around kit! I am pushing 60 and had major back surgery about a decade ago…there is a massive attraction to less weight! Part of why I still really enjoy shooting on vintage film cameras!

I have the Sigma 56mm for my Fuji and I love it. I have been waiting for Sigma to make Z mounts but I'm also hoping for some zooms. When I travel I want to carry as little gear as possible and on my F mount would pack my Sigma 18-300 because it covered every possible need without carrying too much.

Curious how they compare to the Nikon 28/2.8 and 40/2 lenses. Obviously they're faster, but how does image quality compare at the same aperture? I've got the 40 and really like it on my Z50. I'm looking forward to the DX 24 (whenever it comes out), but the sigma 16 is an interesting alternative for a wider prime.

I’ve heard the sigma 30 is not quite on the level of the 16/56 as it’s the oldest. However the 16 and 56 have been said to be some of the sharpest of the apsc options for Sony with the 56 probably being the single sharpest lens.

Have you compared the sigma 56mm f1.4 vs nikon 40mm f2? Im looking for a small travel, street, portrait setup for my z50. I did have a z6 with adapter and sigma 85mm f1.4 F mount in the past and loved the field of view. Im just not sure if i get the Nikon 40mm f2. That I'll regret not spending a few extra dollars and getting the FOV I know I love with the sigma 56mm.
@veeaa
@veeaa Жыл бұрын
The Sigma will be much sharper. The 40mm is quite soft at f2, however the Sigma is very decently sharp already at f1.4 and only gets better at f2. You need at least f2.8 to get decently sharp results from the 40mm. With that being said, people are still really happy with the 40mm. I think rather than the sharpness, the deciding factors between these two lenses should revolve around focal lenght and size as they are both more than good enough.

Great step forward for Nikon Z system and SIgma! As a phtography guide in Uruguay invested for professional use of mine with Z9 and Z6II (on Z since early 2019), I´ve been suggesting Nikon Z due that everything here cost 3 times more than in the US. So Z has those important points: flawless system, long last even used under heavy conditions, not as expensive as R, same lay out for every body, great sensors, less time correcting on editing, and some more... I think that Nikon is starting to make some sort of pressure to others opening their mount. Just 2 more APS C bodies, a Z8, and firmware updates could make them step up hard. PD: just in Latin AMerica, there are millions of photographers with Nikon´s Dxxx waiting for those Z APS C equivalents. Salute to both and excuse mixing so many topics! Tire of so many fake info about Nikon Z. There are a lot of camera operators, some are photographers. Thanks for your time, I love u both!

I have the Nikon AF-S DX 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR... The Image stabilization is so awesome that I don't need for Sunset a tripod... (1/2 second is possible) and no sun glaring, no color fringing), sharp, focus engine is noisy for videos... For what reason I should carry 3 lenses...This lens was enough for my entire Nepal holidays/trekking with my Nikon Z50... But I can use this lens also on my Nikon D7200... You can't beat this lens with any prime lens without image stabilization under low light. F2 is good enough for a 16 mm... And even better you get the image distortion/vignette control also for videos because it is a Nikon lens. Guess this lens is lighter than your 3 lenses and even has 80mm... For traveling photographs and vlogging, this lens is still the very best... Tell me more! I bought this lens second-hand for $300.

Hey, I have 1 question: How much better is the image quality of the 16mm at f 3.5 compared to the 16-50 kit lens - wondering if I should replace the kit by the 16 and 30 lens
@LeighAndRaymond
@LeighAndRaymond Жыл бұрын
That's a good question. I didn't do any side-by-side comparisons but, from my experience, the kit lens is very good. However, prime lenses will almost always be more sharp than a zoom lens. In addition, the aperture capability is f/1.4 on the prime versus f/3.5 at 16mm on the kit lens - that helps you in low light situations and when you want a more shallow depth of field. That being said, I own the kit lens for my Z30 and love it!

But not only for the good price, they are gorgeous and with them, I get a Full-Frame-Look on MFT. In the night or evening: I can shoot with 1.4 and have double of d-o-f. Great point about bigger apertures on APS-C and having more in focus for landscape like shots in lower light. However, a counter to that is the ISO performance of bigger sensors allow you to stop down to F2 vs F1.4 and have similar results so it's a wash (or sort of anyway).

3:50 This is a mistake. You have to multiply the f number for the crop factor to obtain the equivalency on full frame. Even the iso you have to divide it by the crop factor squared. It's math 🤷

f stop, like f1.4, is the focal length divided by the size of the aperture. Sensor size is not part of the math. This can be tested easily on a full frame camera that allows an APS-C crop. With the same composition with the same lens, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO will be the same for the same scene. You won't have change other settings. I do understand that others do not feel this way, but to them I say... it's math ;)

@@scraymond5597 I think it's great that you say that math decides this, because that means we're on the same page and I can show you why you're wrong. This is the equation: f/d=N. If you have 30mm as focal length (f) and 1.4 as the f number (N), then approximately 21mm is the diameter of the iris. Then, if you only multiply the focal length by the crop factor (1.5) you have a math error: 30(x1.5) /21 ≠ 1.4? You have to multiply the f number by the crop factor in order to get it right: 30 (x1.5)/ 21 = 1.4 (1.5). ISO is not part of this equation, but you if you compare a smaller sensor to a larger one, you have to divide the iso number by the crop factor squared. Have you ever wondered why smaller sensor are noisier than larger ones at the same iso value? This is the reason why. You haven't applied the conversion.

@@vladibarraza I choose to not multiply anything by the crop factor. The lens is f1.4. As you say, N=f/d. Thanks! Good discussion!

You DO multiply the aperture by the crop factor to replicate the DOF. Yes you collect the same amount of light but the rendering is not the same.

Thank you for commenting. Discussion of this is at 3:03 in the video. DOF absolutely does change when you either change the focal length for full frame (I compare DOF between 16mm APS-C to 24mm full frame in my discussion) or if you were shooting 16mm full frame, you might move closer to the subject, also changing the DOF parameters. I think where people sometimes get confused is when they become convinced that these lenses are somehow not f1.4 and some will proudly announce that the lens manufacturers are lying to us. If I were shooting a 16mm FX lens on a full frame body, stood in exactly the same place, and changed nothing else except changing my full frame camera to DX mode, DOF nor anything else would change... except my image would be cropped. Believe it or not, we've had people try to convince us otherwise.

@@scraymond5597 categorically incorrect. If you think otherwise look at the DOF you get on the tiny sensor of any smartphone. There's plenty of smartphones with f1.8 or even brighter apertures but you still get a very deep DOF regardless of subject distance. It's all physics. BTW I teach portrait lighting and photography for a living so I do know a thing or two about DOF. Using your example you'll end up with an equivalent 24mm on a FF sensor but that's not equal to 16mm. What you need to compare is say that 56mm 1.4 to the 85 1.4 FF lens and see the shallower DOF on the 85. That's the proper comparison. If you don't believe me any DOF calculator will clearly show the difference.

@@mikerichardson60 I thought I was agreeing with you, so I think we're just talking past each other. Totally agree that you will have shallower depth of field with shooting 85mm f1/4 compared to 56mm f1.4 DX when standing the same distance from the subject. In that case, you've changed the focal length between the two situations, altering the depth of field. If you keep the focal length constant, you'll be inclined to move your feet to get the same composition between the two scenarios, altering the depth of field. In both cases, you're either changing the focal length or the distance to the subject, which change the depth of field. During our shoot at the botanical garden, I enjoyed that I could shoot DX with a 24mm equivalent full frame field of view with the 16mm DX lens, while enjoying several more feet of in-focus depth of field at a 10 foot distance from my subject, compared to shooting with a 24mm full frame lens at f1.4.

Well these lens might have a Z mount but they were not designed specifically for Nikon, these lens have been around for a while, I have the three in my micro 4/3 collection for a while, Sigma has been adapting the three lens to a few different mounts, Fujifilm and I believe Panasonic L mount and Sony have been made for APSC cameras. I'm waiting for Sigma to be able to get glass for the full frame Z mount, but nothing yet.
