I think Metroidvanias tend to be good because they're relatively simple to make from a technical level, but still provide the complexity necessary to allow the devs to be very creative. To add to that, they're generally only made by people who genuinely love the genre and aren't made specifically to chase success (though I'm sure that is up there on the totem pole haha). There's almost always a palpable level of love and thoughtfulness to them.

Metroidvanias are a very solid choice for a solo or relatively-inexperienced team. They have a very well-established style and mechanical core, so your scope is cleatly set from the beginning. They need fine animation more than elaborate graphics, which showcase skill over budget. They don't need voice or narrative much if you're not skilled at this, but can still featurethem if you are up for it. And the core of it is a fine sense of movement and combat, so you know when it is and is not ready. The scope-creep is limited to expanding the world or enemy roster, both of which are core to the game, or just side activities where you know it's a treat for you. Clear goal,s with a clearly-defined level of success, just what you need in an indie project. They're also good for early buyers or backers, since there is no game until the core mechanics or combat and traversal are reasonably established - if those already feel good the game is going to be at least okay and is safe for you money. And after more than 25 years of metroidvanias, you know a good one when you play it.

It's only a solid choice for a solo dev because it takes literally a single day of coding to finish one. It's baby's first video game essentially. The only time and effort that is required is the assets actually standing out, because it's a 2d game that's been done to death over the last 30 years. I still don't understand why people pay for them to be honest, but people will waste money on literally anything I guess.

Really appreciate the unique gameplay of Elona , and the sandbox roguelike games like it , dwarf fortress is a good parallel where the complexity of interactions starts to become wild and realize the depth of chaos that is possible . SsethTzeentach has a good video on Elona , and can play various modded + versions free as is opensource

Elona is completely demented. A sequel would be great. I remember getting a quest from an NPC in that that wanted me to get monkey feces and give it to his son, saying it was his birthday. Gave it to the son, he paid me, thanked me, and before I could walk out the door, the son ate it and died, then he called the guards and had me arrested for making his son die.

"Metroidvanias and Visual Novels". Honestly, those are two of the most ideal genres for Kickstarter. Generally, Kickstarter campaigns should be for very small studios and indie developers. As you've discussed multiple times, no indie or small team should even think about trying to make something like a full scale MMO or open world survival game. Metroidvanias (and especially VNs) are much more in scope for small or single person teams to accomplish. It's also kind of hard to advertise a Metroidvania (where you want to show off movement, attacks, and enemies) without having a significant amount of work already done. VNs are a bit more of a gamble, but you can at least show off the art which along with the story, are really the main selling points developers need to worry about. Of course these are broad generalizations. I'm sure there are many Metroidvanias that have turned out to be scams, and I recall there being at least one open world survival that ended up being pretty good (to my knowledge, no one who has ever needed a Kickstarter campaign for it has ever actually made a MMO), but generally those two genres are the most WYSIWYG for Kickstarter.

Visual novels became popular after people cared more about the story than the gameplay of old adventure games. My favorite adventure game was Pyramid: Challenge of the Pharaoh's Dream. Sadly not available anymore;( The gameplay focused on doing all of the right steps to create the pyramid so the gameplay felt organic.

@@noname-gp6hk Yeah, I kind of lost interest in all AAA games years back, they all blended together and there are some fun one's, I just lost interest. That's when i found Visual Novels, the stories was of course the entire focus as few feature gameplay (and the ones which do feels forced), but some stories out there are insane good, creatively speaking and just as a media type. Funny thing is, not only is their writing above AAA devs, they cost a fraction of the amount (usually) and aren't buggy due to only need mostly static images and text with audio. I think as you come to appreciate story, you come to enjoy them more. When i first heard of VN's i admit i was like "eh, sounds boring", now its most of the games i play.

7 Days to Die is in Alpha since 10 years - but i have played it for thousands of hours and it is successful on Steam and the devs are still working on it full time. So early access in general can work well for dedicated devs making an open world survival game if they are in it for the long run. These devs (The Fun Pimps) in particular aren't the most skilled and they certainly aren't good at communication or planning. What makes them able to do it is that they make the game of their dreams and are committed to experimenting and improving it until it is done. You can do whatever game you want - if you have the stamina and longterm commitment to make it the center of your life for decades. If you don't, then yeah, keep it small and simple.

Elona (and so most likely Elin) is basically an Roguelike jrpg heavily influenced by ADOM with survival (hunger) elements, and in-part dynasty game (can marry and create new characters as off-springs that get traits from their 'parents'). Features include: marrying your motorcycle (pet), owning (and having to pay tax on) a house (or castle, or cave, or whatever). playing piano and piss-off people (NPCs) that don't like it, and them throwing stones at you, so you die. Assuming Elin wants to be a sequel to Elona's gameplay aspects, that's what one can expect (and based on the alpha demo, seems to be the case). In short: Elona is ADOM but with a Japanese creativity onsense thrown in. Absolutely amazing game.

I loved platformers when I was a kid but don't touch them now either. As I've aged, I've realised I'm drawn to anything that has crafting (and/or building) and resource management. Which is a super broad umbrella that includes survival games, city builders, cozy farming games, and even many RPGs and MMOs. So it's less that I have a favorite genre and more that to keep my attention you've got to let me hoard shit for progression.

Fireborn, a large Hollow Knight speedrunner/content creator, did a video on Rune Fencer Illyia and gave a mini review on the demo the devs sent. He had some great praise and is really keen, so that's definitely looking like a big winner. Emberbane looks seriously incredible though, the combat and movement seem so fluid and responsive. Reading the kickstarter though, I think my only problem is that the scope seems a little too small - they only have 6 bosses planned, and they plan to deliver within a year, which makes me worried they'll have a phenomenal game without enough content, and metroidvanias really rely on having that level of content to really fulfill the exploration fantasy, at least from my experience.

Back when I was a teenager, I played platformers in the arcade and on the computer at home. I spent a lot of time with games such as Donkey Kong and Jumpman. Never once in my life did I "git gud" at a platformer no matter how hard I tried. I finally decided that platformers do not mesh well with my poor reflexes, and I now avoid them like the plague. That game at the end sure looks suspicious. I bet it is full of crypto/NFT garbage. If it actually turns out to be something real and not a total scam, it might be fun to try to play it as the world's worst jerk and see how the AI characters respond. I wonder what it would take to make enemies of all of them.
