Haha, Artillery vs. Mythology sounds so true, it reminds me of my Filipino grandparents. My dad told me seriously that they see "shadow people" around the country property where they live, and I thought he was pulling my leg, so later I asked my grandma about it and she didn't even hesitate and casually told me "yeah if you see them just tell them 'God bless you' and don't mind them." Just like, "yeah it's no big deal, case closed." These days when I visit, I keep my head on a swivel when I walk back to my car at night. Once I've got the engine on I'm out of there! Just recently, late in the middle of the night, my grandfather got up to answer a knock on the front door. He opened the door and nobody was there, and suddenly he felt cold and felt his hair stand up. He said, to the open doorway, "Come inside! Come in!" and then shortly after he closed the door and went back to bed. This, he tells me, is because you must be respectful to the dead.

I know the situations aren't really similar but the way the author described Bud made me think of my grandfather. He served as an inflight mechanic on Lancasters during WWII and was one of the most unassuming, kindest men you could ever hope to meet. He never really spoke of his service, i only found out a lot of the stories about him during that time after he passed away.

My Regiment in the British Army was the Royal Artillery, and my role was as a Gunner with a surface to air missile unit. The weapon we had was the Javelin which was an updated version of 'Blowpipe', which has now been updated and renamed again as 'Starstreak'. I left the Army mainly due to boredom, there wasn't anything going on in the world at the time (1998), it was about the quietest period the world has seen for years. Shortly after I left, the unit I was with changed role, and was re-equipped with the 105mm Light Gun, which is a FAR superior piece of equipment, and loads of fun. Really regret leaving when I did.
@foxrecon19d
@foxrecon19d 2 жыл бұрын
My first two combat MOS's were air defense (20mm Vulcan and Stinger) Later, I went light artillery (airmobile) with the M102 105mm. We transitioned into the M109 155mm but then returned to the 105mm with the British M119A3. Weird piece that one. In order to emplace the gun, you first had to remove one of the wheels, then reattach it again to the frame. Afterwards, you had to pull the entire gun onto its own firing platform. Personally, I preferred the older M102 where you simply cranked the wheels down onto its own firing base. Hammer in two stakes and that's it. She's ready to go. Time to lay and safe was three minutes faster than laying the M119 and the M102 had 360 degree firing, which, admittedly, we used a grand total of zero times in both training and combat. Still, converting the M119 to the A3 variant gave that little piece capabilities which the old M102 could only dream of.

I listened to the first half yesterday, but picked up right with Bud and Sarge. Were Buds tales true? They could certainly pass for it if so, and as far as the part Japanese/Filipino/American soldier, he certainly kept his wits about him to be confronted by a glowing angry spirit woman in the dark misty street! That’s what keeping an open mind can prepare you for. If you have no belief, then when the moment comes where you’re proven wrong, you’ll need to change your shorts. That is, should you get out alive!

When the mig 21s came onto the scene in vietnam... the f4 phantoms even had a hard time with them. The f105s however, could outfly the mig 21... but they used those for bombing. The f4 phantom was kind of like the old muscle cars of the hot rod era. Couldnt turn fast at all but man they were some brutal aircraft. Their achillies was the crappy missiles that always failed at tracking. 1 out of 4 ever tracked. Its what caused the heavy f4 phantom losses. I just wish I could have flown one. But i am content as a raptor pilot.
