The Glasgow subway (clockwork orange) is definitely the cutest subway there is. The video cannot capture it very well, as everything is smaller, but a an average male around 180cm standing upright is barely possible. When you stand in front of it you can almost look over it. Like a little hobbit railway.

For information, the VAL (created by Professor Gabillard) of Lille was first named Villeneuve-d'Ascq Lille, because of its route which served these cities at that time. It is from the extension of line 1 and the creation of line 2 that the VAL is called Light automatic vehicle vehicle (Véhicule Automatique léger in French). It is designed by the French company Matra with that of Germany Siemens. Good continuation.

The Moscow Metro is not only the most palatial of underground railways but also, I think, the only Metro which is part monorail. The elevated monorail bit runs from the Timiryazevskaya via Fonvisinskaya and VDNKHa (Bus interchange and exhibition centre) metro stations to Sergeya Eisensteina Street. I believe it was built as a prestige project for the Moscow Olympics: a conventional duorail would have been a great deal faster and more convenient. Incidentally I believe also that the Moscow Metro is built to 5 ft 3 in gauge. The gauge was chosen such that 4 ft 8 in gauge German trains could not run on it and the Soviet gauge was so close to standard gauge that the track could not be converted to dual gauge 4 ft 8 in / 5 ft 3 in. When I last used the Moscow Metro there was a train every two minutes from 6 am to 1 am, making it probably the most intensive service on the planet.

My personal three most favorite Metro systems, that I reaaaaally want to visit one day are the Vancouver SkyTrain in Canada, the Bilbao Metro in the Basque Country in Spain and the Lausanne Metro in Switzerland. I love the SkyTrain becuase of its high visibility and elegance, as well as being a cheaper yet more affordable solution than a typical Subway. The Bilbao Metro is also my favorite not only because of the visuals (i.e. the trains, the canopy-styled stations), but also mainly because of the narrow, meter-gauge track it uses, one of few metric Metro Systems worldwide. Lastly, I love the Lausanne Metro, as M2 is a full automated Metro Line and M1, despite being a mainly single-tracked line, manages to run extremely frequent services like every 7-8 minutes. I take an extra liking to Lausanne, because it has similar demographics in the main city area to my hometown Patras in Greece, however we have nothing that can even reach this style of service and dream how things could be...

Some of Karlsruhes tram-trains are dual-mode vehicles which can run on both 750V DC (used on the tram lines) and 15kV AC (used by Deutsche Bahn, Germanys national railway system). @@mikeblatzheim2797 how can you say that. The trains are iconic and characterful. It has an almost unique in the world 4th rail electrification standard, unique loading gauge on deep level lines with the unique train design with the doors curving up onto the roof, as well as its age and heritage being second to none. Other than the underground, there’s the dlr and automated light metro similar to the Vancouver skytrain, trams, overground which is a network operated at mainline standards, soon cross rail will join thameslink to creat an rer style network, not to mention the huge regional and suburban commuter network, high speed rail, red double decker buses. How is London not unique???
@mikeblatzheim2797
@mikeblatzheim2797 3 жыл бұрын
@@JacobOhlssonBudinger For example there is Berlin, which also has an underground with different unique loading gauges, an S-Bahn (the RER follows the same principle), a massive tram network, double deck buses, an extensive regional network including a circular rail line and a rail line that crosses under the city centre in a tunnel (and meets at Berlin central station, which is a crossover station with tracks on multiple levels), rolling stock that can only be found there, and since you appear to consider two different modes of electrification interesting, also sections of track with both third rail and overhead catenary. Trains and liveries are unique, great history, yadda yadda yadda. Oh, and for a time there was an automated maglev. The double deck buses running in London are found across the UK, and other models can be found across Europe. There's nothing unique like buses with passenger trailers, trolleybuses or three-section bendy buses (or bendy buses altogether). Self-driving trains aren't particularly unique (Nuremberg even has them running together with manually operated ones), and whilst the shape of the trains on deep level lines is certainly interesting (and an inconvenience), Glasgow has London beat on that. As for the rest of the rail network, there are probably a dozen European cities where it's organised similarly. There are far more unique systems; Karlsruhe for instance has actual two-system trams that run for dozens of miles on regular rail lines, including on main lines and using the regular OHC. And the closest tram line from me starts as a suburban service, goes through deep level and cut-and-cover tunnels, runs on regular streets both separated from and in traffic, has some elevated sections and eventually goes across the countryside on a regular rail line to the next city over, where it once again runs as an underground (Some lines use K4000 trains, which were developed for this system and have since been also introduced in London). It uses high floor vehicles capable of 60mph and has inbuilt steps for some low level platforms. But even that isn't particularly special and can be found in countless cities, so I don't see why London, with it's certainly distinctive but nevertheless generally mundane modes of transportation should get a mention in this video. The most unique thing about London's public transport is the bloody cable car, which has also been done bigger and better elsewhere. Other than that, the transport is pretty vanilla as far as large European cities go.
@pixoontube2912
@pixoontube2912 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikeblatzheim2797 I still think that London is unique, simply because they were the first to operate underground trains. I also like Londons stations and rolling stock more than Berlins. But still, Berlin also has a unique system, as you can still see the cities division. Eastern Berlin has loads of trams but only the U2 and U5, whilst the west features almost no trams but many more Subway lines. You can still see in the shape of the U7 and U9 that they tried to avoid East Berlin. So in every sense, every transit system in the world is unique in its way, as every city is unique. Additionally, I think that once a unique system has proven itself, it starts to be copied elsewhere, as the "Karlsruher Modell" can be found in other German cities like Saarbrücken or Kassel. I also know other German cities other than Cologne that use high-floor and low-floor vehicles on their light rail Systems, like Düsseldorf or Essen.

for the metro system in Amsterdam, the s1 and s2 are still running and at least one has changed to the gray red color scheme (r-net), the s3 / m4 all are already changed to the r-net colors but further are still all running, also the s1/s2 don't convert any more to a tram to go to Amstelveen, the 51 line now just continues to isolatorweg from station zuid/south to make it go into an U form

My top: 10-Yerevan 9-Madrid (Fun fact: The Line 1 is the only one that preserves the circular tunnel design! 8-Paris 7-CDMX 6-(FIFTY FIFTY)Barcelona / Málaga (This Light Metro) 5-Stockolm 4-Rotterdam 3-Tokyo 2-Amsterdam 1-Valencia , Spain (My city) (Fun fact: The Valencia subway is more of a Metro-train service, since most of the stations are on the surface (and the optional stops, which are only on lines 1 and 2, are all on the surface) Other Fan fact: The network has 9 lines, but lines 4, 6, 8 and those under construction 10 and 11 are modern tram lines. in fact, the first tram units, the 3800 Class. Only on line 4, they were the first trams (still in service, they are expected to be withdrawn in approximately 2035), they began to run in 1994 .. being Valencia the first city to recover the tram in its modern version in Spain!

How about the Oslo system. Starts off as an underground and ends up as a mountain railway. And the most incredible thing about the Glasgow system is that up till the 1970s it was rope hauled in one continuous loop which is why the stations are all the same distance apart.

@Timosha21 - OMG , these platforms of the Glasgow Subway/Underground @ 8:05 even make Japanese from Tokyo feel squeezed in a sardin can, even on the tiny (usually insufficiant & dangerous) platforms. But at least it does not have a dreadful 4th ( = 2nd Power) rail in the middle of the track (in London there is no escape , inside the tunnel you could only evacuate via front & back & fall on the 4th rail to get zapped) ... While the Stuttgart Subway/U-Bahn uses an overhead wire & used its last classic tram units in the 2000s inside these tunnels

You should check out the Wuppertal Metro in Germany. Its a suspended monorail. Their is another suspended monorail in Tokyo nicknamed the roller coaster. the Ascensore Castello d'Albertis-Montegalletto in Genoa, Italy. Not sure if this counts, but The Morgantown PRT is interesting.

Yes, the train system of Victoria Australia. It has stations that comprise people carriers, cargo, as well as suburban electric, and regional trains. There is also an underground loop for the suburban electric trains, that is multi level.

Apart from China, India 🇮🇳 has got the highest number of cities having fully operational metro systems 13 and underconstruction in another 15 cities with another 10 cities being planned. So in total by 2030 India will have 38 cities with their own metro rails. Besides Mumbai having its own fully operational Monorail and two bullet train projects being built with hyperloop trains also being built in India. Infact Indian railways have the maximum 71% electrification done (one of the highest) with magnetic technology also being planned, India looks set to beat China in near future

I think that the Metrorex in Bucharest is quite interesting, and I was surprised to not see something like that or even the underground mentioned here. However, I do think that if the list was expanded there would have been a lot of close ties to who would be number 1.

The Metropolitan transit system in the city of Perth, Western Australia has developed into a world class one. Efficient and regular services operate on a coastal strip route over 100K long and expanding. First class connectivity from train stops to outer suburbs by way of timely bus services. Excellent free bus service in CBD.

I concur with your placement of the Moscow metro system at number one, however, I'm disappointed that Montréal did not make the list. It's not far away for an American visitor, and their stations are famous for their unique designs. A comparatively large percentage of each station's budget is devoted to public art.
