Some of the oldest commercial planes still flying are Boeing 737 aircraft - although not all are flying commercial service anymore. Did you know that there is a sizable number of first-generation 737s still operating? Most of these aircraft are above or approaching 50 years in age. Simple Flying takes a look at the oldest Boeing 737s in operation.

The majority of my flights as a kid were aboard 737-200's, back in the 80's and 90's because that's what was flown into the small cities in the Canadian north - The fact those two aircraft from Nolinor are still flying is because they're the "newest" 737 series which came equipped with the gravel kits. If you look under the fronts of the engines, you'll see small tubes - these are bleed air nozzles that blow down to prevent gravel from being sucked into the engines and destroying them. Newer 737's have higher bypass (read: larger inputs) engines which, in combination to their proximity to the ground, make it impossible to prevent the gravel from coming in. As well, many of the sites Nolinor and other northern Canadian airlines fly into cannot have paved runways due to the expense in the paving as well as the fact the ground they're built on are prone to frost heaves that would damage the pavement. A gravel runway is easy to repair - asphalt, not so much.

Propeller planes are the only way to go with gravel runways. I'm suprised they even bother with jet engine on gravel runways.
@joncalon7508
@joncalon7508 4 жыл бұрын
@@leaveearly3751 Not necessarily possible in a lot of cases. Some of the mine sites that Nolinor flies into are not around long enough for paved runways to make sense, and the speed of the turboprop planes leaves a lot to be desired. Add to the fact that there aren't many aircraft models out there that can operate in Combi Mode - Other than a 737-200Combi, what aircraft would have the carrying capacity for a mine crew changeout plus ability to haul in all the necessary supplies for a week or two? There is good reason why Nolinor has put a lot of money into keeping their 737's flying.

While never flown on 737-200, this is my favourite 737 variant. The design looked small and simple, yet cute and versatile. I imagine that this is the jet aircraft version of DC-3. Sadly however, it won't be staying longer than or similar to DC-3.
@obelic71

the 737-200 is loved in the artic because the engines don't suck in gravel or debris due to the jet intake protection (A rod that emits bleed air down before the intake) Solong they are economical to run in the artic they will fly for decades to come. The DC3 is a class of its one. That bird keeps on flying and can be re-engined again in the future (electric, hydrogen)

I saw the Nolinor 737-200 boarding passengers at the gate right beside me. It was being chartered to transport some army cadets for an event in Ottawa. Normally I whouldn't have paid any attention as there were other newer 737s at the Airport, this one caught my attention because everything looked modern for the exception of the engine. Plus it looked like the plane was freshly painted with the Nolinor livery within the last 2yrs.

Wow, they are killing A380's in their adolescence with this looong life to live.
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 4 жыл бұрын
Because it was a failure from the start and simply a way for Airbus to one up Boeing. If they made it to fit existing infrastructure it'd be a different story but considering how much it costs to modify an airport to be able to use the 380 it had 2 strikes against it from the start.
@lmlmd2714
@lmlmd2714 4 жыл бұрын
@@southjerseysound7340 I don't think that's entirely it. The A380 wasn't a total flop. Compared to the 747-8 it sold way better (to me, that 747-8 pax version really was a bridge too far for Boeing) I think the A380 had real issues, but has also become a victim of it's own (negative) hype. Most of those issues weren't bad design, as much as they were bad predictions about the future, and bad timing in general. The A380s real problem on the used market is that most aircraft have a second life after pax service as freighters or speciality aircraft. This isn't really possible for the A380 in any meainstream roles as it's hull structure makes it hard to convert to freighter configuration (one reason Airbus themselves never went down that road, despite considering it) and also the compromises they did make on the design to avoid even further configuration changes to airports means it's raw weight payload isn't terribly competetive. One area it could be useful in given the vast interior space and suprisingly rugged construction could well as a very generous space simulator. Given the rising interest in space in recent years, I wouldn't be suprised if we don't see a few of these wind up as a zero-G aircraft - there's enough space inside to mock up an envrionment as well as simply subject the pax to zero-G. Another role will likely be large ad-hoc charters, as we've already seen in Covid-19. Given the virus might be with us for a while, I expect we'll be seeing some demand for these sorts of large-scale, limited duration flights, so as regular airlines with small, marginal A380 fleets phase them out, charter airlines will probably buy some up, especially since they are insanely cheap. Overall though, there isn't much hope of a 2nd life for many of their aircraft, and that's a real shame. Most likely they'll be cannibalised for their engines.
@southjerseysound7340
@southjerseysound7340 4 жыл бұрын
@@lmlmd2714 you can't compare sales directly. The 380 was a clean sheet design and a massive one at that. So the financial investment was massive compared to the 747-800. The amount of aircraft needed to break even for each is completely different. The biggest nail in the 380's coffin was it's just too big and too heavy for a lot of airports. You can't use just any gate and this is also why it'll never see life in the secondary market. Yes it was used in a few repatriation flights, but they are the exception. Most charter's normally work from secondary airports and or older terminals that aren't equipped to handle the 380 As far as cargo ops go, if the 380 could operate from more airports chances are someone would convert it to a freighter and get it certified. But since it didn't sell so well and it's too heavy and big for a lot of places it's not even fesable for converting.

Nolinor is installing modern avionics and systems on their 737-200s and will not retire them anytime soon. The 737-200 is the only one that can operate on gravel strips with gravel kits due to the small size of their engines. I recall the 2002 flight distinctly because it was with Alliance air a subsidiary of Indian airlines and the plane has overhead racks and dim lighting from old lamps. We were seated in the rear of the plane, MAA- HYD, the take off was shallow with a long takeoff run, leaving me nervously hoping we were not out of runway. The landing was equally dramatic, lots of rolling and adjustments than expected for the short final. But as the saying goes... I rode these versions with Southwest Airlines in 1998-2000. In 2001 they purchased the 800 series. Very nice reliable plane. I'm sure they are getting toward the end of service life on these 200's. Though not as many cycles as SWA. Anything a half century old needs some TLC. BTW. Me & the 737 program are the same AGE! LOL!

Last flew a 737-200 in the early 90s with Britannia Airways. Even as a young child I was gutted when they binned them for 757s although I quickly got used to having the (tiny screen massive CRT) TV stuck in the ceiling to watch. These were just 2-3 hour charter flights from Cardiff or Bristol to the resorts of the Costa del Sol in southern Spain but it was amazing what they used to include: newspaper, sweet on takeoff and landing to suck, full meal service (excluding alcohol or any drink except water, tea or coffee) and of course the good old duty free trolley before the EU banned it. Back then if you asked the stewardess politely she’d take you up to the cockpit - a privilege lost to today’s passengers - I used to love the pilot explaining the main controls and just looking out the windscreen and the ‘eyebrow’ windows those old 737s used to have.

I have flown pre-owned 737-200s in the late 1990s on domestic routes of the now defunct then start-up Air Philippines. Its rival Philippine Airlines started flying new 737-300s around the country in the late 1980s. Having flown on both these series models then did not make a difference in my experience as a passenger in the cabin though outside the -200s were much noisier.

WestJet in Canada started out with nothing more than 3 used -200's flying to 5 destinations in 1996. When they were sold to Onyx Corp last year, they had 185 planes on 114 destinations. Two of the -200's were donated to technical colleges in Canada. Don't know what became of the third one. I've been flying with these guys since they started out.

My first ride was on Western Airlines. It was a commute from San Diego to LAX. There we sat my brother and I on the left font side and there was a plexiglass cover between us and the flight attendants and ourselves. The year was 1969.

You didn’t mention the most astonishing part…the hours. I’ve been involved with retiring some 200’s that spent almost half of their life in the air! 30 year old planes that had over 130,000 hours on them. 😎👍

I have on US Air several times. The seats were significantly MORE COMFORTABLE and the clam shell thrust reversers could stop them in very short distances. Also on Piedmont out of DC National where we were in a long line and the lead aircraft had some sort of problem and our plane was given permission to taxi down another runway and back taxi the main runway, turn around and make a hasty departure before an incoming landing.

I flew the 200 with SABENA. So light in the controls compared to a MAX. with no IRS to align, you could just hop on, start the engines right away and off you go. Even starting the engines was quick. Starter cutout occurs at 36% N2 compared to 46 on a classic, 56 on a NG and 63 on a MAX. Even on a MAX when engines are hot you first got to straighten the shafts before injecting fuel. It takes ages to start B737 Max’s hot engines compared to the 1 minute for both engines on a 200.

The boeing 737max is gonna be built up to late 2020's at least. The last b737max would have a life expectancy of around 30 years, which means that people are gonna still flying b737, an aircraft that flew for the first time in 1967, in 2060 or more! Imagine flying a boeing 221max or beechcraft model 18 new generation today as a regular airliner!

About a decade ago I was in the Island of Margarita, Venezuela. My family decided to go for my fathers birthday. We flew CCS-PMV with Venezolana, the flight was operated with a 737-200 but I don't really recall anything outstanding about the flight. After spending a nice weekend in Margarita we went to the airport and discovered that the airline had made a mistake by booking us in a cancelled flight, so my father bought tickets in CONVIASA. I remembered that less than a year before there had been an accident with on of their 737s so I was scared since I boarded the plane until we landed in Caracas. I really prefered flying Aerpostals DC9-50s and MD80s.

My very first flight in a jet airliner was a 727-200. I didn't know at the time, I was 8 & it was a Monarch flight from Luton Airport to Mahon. I still have a photo standing in front of it with my dad, I also visited the flight deck mid-flight. How things have changed from the early 1980's.
