In the 80s, I had an argument with my teacher about the Island of Surtsey. He kept getting the name wrong instead calling it Xerxes and, as a nerdy 7 year old who knew better, I told him straight that he was wrong. A few days later he came to be and apologised, saying I was right and that he was impressed with my geography knowledge. He then gave me an atlas from the 1800s as a thank for you for not giving in. All credit goes to my Wheetabix Wonder World Atlas which I read over and over and over!

There’s an interesting story about Queimada Grande. A fishermen's boat once stopped at the island to gather some fruit, but snakes managed to sneak onboard and bit the entire crew. When locals discovered the abandoned “ghost boat,” they ventured to the island and, in an attempt to rid it of snakes, tried to set the entire island on fire. The island’s name, Queimada Grande-roughly translated as “Big Burn”-comes from this very tale. I grew up in a town that this island is close, so yeah, that's a lot of tales.

The RAAF base further north of course will be rather restricted. Google streetview allows you to conduct a virtual tour of the area with many relics of times gone by on full view. One might safely assume that if we, the mere publics, weren't allowed to see these items, Google would have likely been instructed to obfuscate them.

We surmised that they probably believe what ever their elders tell them and if those elders know some of the truth of outside technology they won't be sharing it with their people,the explanation will support some sort of long held belief,ominously or otherwise.

In Alberta, Canada, we have a 12,000 km² restricted are with military check points and security patrols. It's the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range. CLAWR for short. It's access is restricted to military personel and construction/oilfield workers. Very heavily documented and tracked to prevent acciddents. Construction workers have added procedures for ground disturbance incase of striking undetected munitions with EOD numbers posted incase we find any. They have full size mock missile launche sites, radar stations, airfields, bunkers and more as target practice. Canadas allies from around the world come here to practice. For the comparison 12,000km² is about 9% the size of England. Or a little over half the size of Wales. There are also restricted areas within this restricted area to prevent disturbing the remains of an aboriginal burial sites. One of the coolest things I'd seen here was infact a c130 doing a corkscrew dive firing flares being chased by a fighter jet in a mock evasion exercise. The aircraft I believe have a ceiling of 100 feet or 30.48m for most of this area as construction crews needed permission to build anything in excess of that height like flare stacks or communications towers.

One reason Woomera is off limits is because it was a nukr test site in the late 40s and 50s and is still unsafe to travel over those areas though there are tourist tours of the area at some times depending on weather and other regulations as it is still an active test range for all the Australian Military assets the only area that might have more unexploded munitions on it than Woomera would be some where like Puckapunyal in Victoria or Shoal Water Training Area in Queensland that have been live firing ranges since world war 1.

Not correct, woomera was not a nuclear test site, maralinga was, that being 600 desert klm away. The ordnance contained on the wreck of the Richard Montgomery has no chance of detonation due to the fact that bombs were not shipped with detonators installed. These were screwed in later at airfields and still not even armed until almost on the target . Think of it this way; no detonation occurred when the ship sank and the bombs were tossed all over the ships interior as it sank and settled.
@coolsnake11342 ай бұрын
However depending on the composition of the actual explosives used they could possibly get more sensitive as they age meaning spontaneous detonation even without a detonator could happen just because of the change in the chemical makeup. For example Dynamite that was made with nitroglycerin becomes more unstable as it ages because the nitroglycerin crystallizes.
@bele2.0412 ай бұрын
@coolsnake1134 The ordnance most likely filled with RDX. This composition has low shock sensitivity and most likely would degrade, not become more likely to detonate after 80 years in salt water.

5:38 just set off a small Charge, to attempt to detonate the un-exploded ordinance. The Water will hold back most of the force. To further help, set up lexan glass screens underwater, around the site. An warn residents, an businesses in a 1 mile radius there will be some construction going on an there will be some demolitionan explosives used, and detonate after Midnight. If most of the ordinance is rendered useless after all these years in water the charge might be the only thing set off. Short of trying to set off a Charge, pump in some Concrete into the ship.

Woomera is also home to an observatory that was originally a Baker-Nunn telescope camera site used for tracking satellites.

If making an uninhabitable rock in space, habitable, is destroying nature then thats a pretty pretentious notion.

1. woo-mer-uh 2 A-bombs were carried out at Maralinga and Emu Field, not Woomera. 3. At its height the range extended to around Exmouth Gulf in WA, about 1900 miles, connected in part by a highway known as the Gunbarrel Highway, it was so straight.

These were all interesting for sure. The doomsday Vault one i found a bit more interesting though. I think that it might have been the inspiration for one of my favorite games Horizon zero dawn.

Ilooked up North Sentinel Island on Google Earth and there seems to be villages and clearly visible roads (maybe footpaths) on the island. Clever people!

So a critical reason why Woomera was restricted was due to English nuclear weapons tests. The areas are only just starting to be cleared.

They never talk about how they can leave the “North Sentinel island” whenever they want, & if they left that island to commit a heinous crime on/the nearest village, only to return to the “North Sentinel islands” refuge, they’d have automatic immunity… …& or those who’ve succeeded John Allen Chau, & or are now reaping the benefits of immunity as a foreign “North Sentinel islander!”

They actually had to stop using Whomb-air-a as a testing ground, turns out all the munitions etc were being triggered by the pom's pronunciation.
