In the 80s, I had an argument with my teacher about the Island of Surtsey. He kept getting the name wrong instead calling it Xerxes and, as a nerdy 7 year old who knew better, I told him straight that he was wrong. A few days later he came to be and apologised, saying I was right and that he was impressed with my geography knowledge. He then gave me an atlas from the 1800s as a thank for you for not giving in. All credit goes to my Wheetabix Wonder World Atlas which I read over and over and over!

There’s an interesting story about Queimada Grande. A fishermen's boat once stopped at the island to gather some fruit, but snakes managed to sneak onboard and bit the entire crew. When locals discovered the abandoned “ghost boat,” they ventured to the island and, in an attempt to rid it of snakes, tried to set the entire island on fire. The island’s name, Queimada Grande-roughly translated as “Big Burn”-comes from this very tale. I grew up in a town that this island is close, so yeah, that's a lot of tales.

I live not far from the Montgomery. There's currently a very big twist in that particular tale that you might be interested in. A ship that left a Russian port called the Ruby, carrying a cargo of highly explosive fertiliser many times more destructive than the bueirut explosion, which claims to be damaged, but seems to be perfectly navigable around critical infrastructure, is currently moored close enough to the Montgomery to spark a devastating explosion.

Yeah Woomera was used as a rocket range by the UK and Australia. With the Maralinga nuclear testing I knew someone who was a part of that and they would tell me what it was like when they detonated a nuclear device, how the sky would change colours when it went off. My dad and I on our holidays in 1985 visited Woomera as the town now open to the public, and we explored the area it was very interesting place.

There are some crashed blue streaks out on the range still (heaps of rust at this point). Blue Streak initially served as the first stage of the ESA Europa vehicle. The Uk pulled out of that project and took its first stage with it to focus on Black Arrow (which didnt even use blue streak), but then cancelled the entire launch vehicle project before the first and only launch even took place. I think your information regarding Woomera might be a little outdated Simon. As far as I am aware, the village of Woomera is now publicly accessible. The RAAF base further north of course will be rather restricted. Google streetview allows you to conduct a virtual tour of the area with many relics of times gone by on full view. One might safely assume that if we, the mere publics, weren't allowed to see these items, Google would have likely been instructed to obfuscate them.

I was talking to random guy at a bar about this recently after a news report about them came on the TV. He said much the same,adding how he thought it was funny that they probably think we fear them enough to stay away, when the reality is that their entire existence is very fragile,the world to them would be terrifying,further adding that a couple of well trained soldiers or one missile could end their entire race in minutes,a grim thought but realistic none the less. We surmised that they probably believe what ever their elders tell them and if those elders know some of the truth of outside technology they won't be sharing it with their people,the explanation will support some sort of long held belief,ominously or otherwise.

In Alberta, Canada, we have a 12,000 km² restricted are with military check points and security patrols. It's the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range. CLAWR for short. It's access is restricted to military personel and construction/oilfield workers. Very heavily documented and tracked to prevent acciddents. Construction workers have added procedures for ground disturbance incase of striking undetected munitions with EOD numbers posted incase we find any. They have full size mock missile launche sites, radar stations, airfields, bunkers and more as target practice. Canadas allies from around the world come here to practice. For the comparison 12,000km² is about 9% the size of England. Or a little over half the size of Wales. There are also restricted areas within this restricted area to prevent disturbing the remains of an aboriginal burial sites. One of the coolest things I'd seen here was infact a c130 doing a corkscrew dive firing flares being chased by a fighter jet in a mock evasion exercise. The aircraft I believe have a ceiling of 100 feet or 30.48m for most of this area as construction crews needed permission to build anything in excess of that height like flare stacks or communications towers.

The ordnance contained on the wreck of the Richard Montgomery has no chance of detonation due to the fact that bombs were not shipped with detonators installed. These were screwed in later at airfields and still not even armed until almost on the target . Think of it this way; no detonation occurred when the ship sank and the bombs were tossed all over the ships interior as it sank and settled.
@coolsnake1134
@coolsnake1134 2 ай бұрын
However depending on the composition of the actual explosives used they could possibly get more sensitive as they age meaning spontaneous detonation even without a detonator could happen just because of the change in the chemical makeup. For example Dynamite that was made with nitroglycerin becomes more unstable as it ages because the nitroglycerin crystallizes.
@bele2.041
@bele2.041 2 ай бұрын
@coolsnake1134 The ordnance most likely filled with RDX. This composition has low shock sensitivity and most likely would degrade, not become more likely to detonate after 80 years in salt water.

West Sister National Wildlife Refuge is an island on Lake Erie with any and all visitation strictly prohibited. It's managed by the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the US Coast Guard. Although it was once occupied due to a lighthouse on the island, it's been off limits for decades due to the unique species of wildlife residing on the island. Step foot on the island and you'll be spending some time in a US Federal Penitentiary somewhere.

i've heard/read about Woomera more than once as a NASA/international space programs' "fan". just like their quote that Simon used... they launch alot of rockets into space from there. basically, it's Cape Canaveral USA for the Southern Hemisphere. it was one of the lowest priority alternate landing sites for the US Space Shuttle during its lifespan. Woomera was a JIC crap weather covered the entirety of the US primary and alt landing sites for the Space Shuttle... the weather 'here' in the US would have been... well... days' long thunderstorms with high winds and possible hail risks.

To answer your question in the very beginning, an old friend of mine said something that feels very true; as a species, we have to survive, and reality is that this planet can only sustain life for so long and in order to ensure the survival of the human race from extinction, we HAVE to get off this planet and find a new world that we may inhabit before we are wiped off from human errors, asteroids, apocalyptic volcanoes, etc cetera.

5:38 just set off a small Charge, to attempt to detonate the un-exploded ordinance. The Water will hold back most of the force. To further help, set up lexan glass screens underwater, around the site. An warn residents, an businesses in a 1 mile radius there will be some construction going on an there will be some demolitionan explosives used, and detonate after Midnight. If most of the ordinance is rendered useless after all these years in water the charge might be the only thing set off. Short of trying to set off a Charge, pump in some Concrete into the ship.
