Fuel the algorithm! The Etienne mystery was addressed when Coach Roderick told reporters that Caleb came in with a lot of talent and physical ability last year but didn't know the offense. He's reportedly a different player now. Great to hear about Jatta's potential. I'm hopeful about the line and the run game, especially Miles Davis. Excited to see K. Hill at tight end and to have Micah Harper back.

It is exciting to be completely overlooked. BYU earned the ranking when finishing abysmally, with 5 losses, putting them out of the postseason. The players had to sit brew and ferment with the horrible 2023 finish. Can the new depth and talent with all the returning experience rise up and punch teams in the face? It is exciting to anticipate!

Love Jeff's insight. Don't think Etienne will magically be better.

Who are your Starting LBs? If all are healthy I think Bywater and Kelly are automatic starters. I've heard rumors that Bywater may not be ready to play. Siale Esera, Harrison Taggart, and Ace Kaufusi are the next guys up, and based on last year I would assume Taggart and Esera have the edge over Kaufusi. A wild card is Isaiah Glasker who might be the most athletic linebacker on the team but hasn't been able to crack into significant playing time.

Jeff, do you think Ben Bywater is actually going to play this season, or is he not ready?

From what I've heard... second half of the season is probably the best bet. And that's not guaranteed.

I'm eager to see what the offense does. If Roderick is still talking about "establishing the run" then I know we won't be running a BYU offense and we're settling in for a 3 maybe 4 win season.

It appears to me that Roderick a runs play action type of offense instead of a shotgun, true air raid type of offense. I think one of the reasons BYU struggled mightily last year is because they didn't have any running game and Slovis wasn't very mobile. We need some sort of run game for our offense to work. For better or for worse. But I agree. If Arod focuses so much on the run when the run isn't there, then we're in trouble if we can't adjust to our strengths. I think that was another issue we had last year, not being able to adapt. We'll see what happens.

Bywater is inspirational but not reliable, the shoulder is a good hit away from the season-ending injury again. Kelley, Kaufusi, Tagert, and others will rise up and replace Bywater.
