Given the globalization of air travel then there really needs to be some sort of universal set standards for carriers to adhere to. A one for all classification for regular airlines & a one for all for budget airlines is long overdue. Take Europe for example. How many tens of millions of people (whether from Europe or from outside the continent) fly in to one country, then decide to hop over to another one during their travels. Someone deciding to explore may find themselves using both Ryanair & Norwegian Air. Both budget carriers, both in the same continent, even share some of the same destinations yet both have different baggage sizes. Now expand that to travelers who are going on a grand vacation. After a few weeks in Europe, they decide to hit S.E Asia. In which case they are most likely going to need to fly with Air Asia (another budget airline), who of course are even stingier with their size & weight allowances. The weight issue obviously has multiple solutions so is a minor inconvenience for your average flyer but a major issue for the minimalist flyer that only goes with carry-on. The discrepancy in bag sizing is the major issue that needs to be addressed imo. For anyone who intends to go visit multiple countries &/or fly to different regions of the same country it's something that may very well affect them & given the expense of good quality luggage then not something that can be taken lightly.

I've been binging your videos for the past few days, and I can't thank you enough. Your channel is super informative for someone who hasn't been on a plane since 2015! I'm anticipating a trip to Europe next year through Lufthansa Airlines and I only want to bring a carry-on with me. I found a duffel bag online that's 55 cm x 38 cm x 33 cm and just over 1 kg when empty. Do you think this will be acceptable?

Glad the videos have been helpful to you! I think a duffel bag with those dimensions will work just fine as duffel bags tend to be more flexible and have more give to them than a standard carry-on bag. As long as you don't fill the duffel bag to the max you shouldn't have any issues.

thank you for the video, this has been helpful and the most current one I have found. I'm flying jetblue within the U.S. carry-on is 22" L x 15" W x 9.5" H. it's over their measurements. Not finding any luggage with the exact measurement, it's either an inch higher or .5 wider. thank you in advance.

What type of carry-on do you have? If there is some flexibility in it, I think you can make it fit on JetBlue's planes without having to buy another carry-on. The worst thing that will happen if it doesn't fit is that they will check your bag for you. Usually when that happens you will get to pick it back up at the bottom of the jetway when you exit the plane without having to go to baggage claim. However, if you don't want that to happen then I have some carry-on options linked in the video description that you can check out.

Hello ben, I use a small luggage everytime and dont have any problem, but my question is can I use a duffel bag (19” x 11” x 11”(38L) as my personal item? or is it too big since my carry on is a small luggage?

That is probably going to be a little big if its going to be completely full unless you are going to use it as your carry-on instead. If you are not going to fill the duffel bag all the way then I think you can get it to fit under the airplane seat as long as its not one of the duffel bags with the wheels.

So what if my duffel bag isnt completely full my bag checks out for the the length, width but is over the height limit about almost 3 inches but its not full so it can collapse down to the allowed size will i be ok like that or is that not a thing any info will be appreciated I'm flying southwest

As long as you don’t fill up the duffel bag and you can collapse it you should have no problems taking it on a Southwest flight.

For suitcases with a retractable handle, do you need to fully extend it and measure that as well? When I measured mine it was over 90cm, but as soon as I retracted the handle, it went to down to around 60cm instead.

My cabin bag is 57 cm high. 21cm deep and 37cm wide. do they look at the size before boarding? the suitcase goes 1cm or 2cm more in height and width. thanks in advance for the answer.

If its just a couple of centimeters over you won't have any issues. The airline is not going to check cabin bags unless it looks obvious that it will not fit.

It will fit well on either of those airlines but I will say if you are going to be flying on American Airlines' regional carrier, American Eagle, it might be a tighter fit.

I have a 23 inch carry-on myself and I don’t have any issues with it except when you are flying the smaller regional jets in which case they won’t fit and will have to gate check your bag.

Hi Ben! Got a question here, if the airline's luggage size standard is (56 x 36 x 23 cm) and my luggage is (46 x 38 x 22 cm), do you reckon I would encounter any problem? The height and depth is within the standard size, but the width is 2cm bigger than the standard size

2cm over on the length is not going to be a problem. You are good to use your luggage with those dimensions

I have not used the Osprey Porter 46L but looking at the size dimensions it should fit in the overhead bins as a carry-on but not as a personal item bag.

I’m flying Hawaiian airlines in august, my carry on is the exact size 22/14/9 but the little handle makes it 23/14/9 do you think they will notice? 😭😭 I’m scared.

It won't be a problem. My carry-on is the exact same size and I have never had any issues.

Also, the length and height of a carry on Im interested in is 11.4 in x 21.2 in BUT the width is 12.5 instead of 9 . Do you think it will work?

If you are taking a duffel type bag then you will probably be ok to use it as long as you don't pack it full. Otherwise, you will need to go with something else or you will risk having to check the bag.

You can usually take garment bags as a carry-on with a size limit of 51 inches. This differs slightly between airlines so you will need to double check the requirements for the airline you are flying on.

I think as long as you don’t completely fill your luggage to capacity it should still fit in the overhead compartments. Otherwise if it ends up not fitting you will be forced to check your bag.

That is going to be too big for a personal item bag. You could use it as your carry on but for a personal item you are going to need something smaller.

Why is it that most passengers put there overhead luggage in areas where they are not sitting? I’ve have gotten to my seat and the area above my seat is taken

That happens a lot. Also, I see people store their luggage in a compartment somewhere behind their seat which becomes an issue after the flight when they can't get to their bag because of everyone else trying to get off the plane.

I fly business class most of the time and many flight bloggers say wait to board as there is not as much hassle. Tried 3 times and when I got to my assigned seat in business the over head bin was full from bags from economy class that had more crap. The last time a African karen had her bags above my seat and claimed it was her seat also. Her the FT checked her boarding pass and she was way in back but would not move so I was told to the back. This African told me I am a racist and that I thought I was privileged. I took my bag and walked of the plane and they wanted to book me next day and got another airline booking. I fly to Asia mostly and very happy to be relocating there and leaving this woke Marxist country.

My carry on bag is a duffel bag that is 24x14x11. It is very flexible and when not full can easily be downsized a little. Do you think this would be okay? I am flying on delta airlines next weekend
