This has been a great 4 part mini series James. Ive enjoyed every minute of it. I already knew that you don't have to spend the inheritance to play decent golf because, well, ive watched your videos for a long time now but for anyone new to your channel, this could be a real eye opener. Keep up the good work buddy. Getting pretty chilly here in Missouri. Golfs bout done for awhile.

My bag has a original resale value of $3450, but I only spent $1375 on the clubs, all new except for a demo Cobra LTDx 5 wood and a demo Odyessy Toulon Austin putter. I purchased all of the other clubs right after the release of the following years models. There is value out there if you don't have to have the newest and shiniest things out. I know I could have gone lower with second hand clubs but, for me, removing the plastic from a new golf club is such a awesome time.

Very much enjoyed this mini series. I don’t think the outcome is a surprise, because golf equipment only ever improves marginally on older equipment. The main thing you highlighted for me is that golf doesn’t need shiny new bats every year to be enjoyed. I’m firmly in the “run what you brung” club. There’s nowhere on the scorecard to write what clubs you game, only a box for the score.

To me, many golf clubs are like you mentioned about the expensive watch or pen, they’re like jewelry. There may be slight performance upgrades, but the cost to upgrade ratio is generally not very good for the consumer. When I started playing golf again, I bought a set of Stix clubs just to see if I wanted to play regularly again. When I realized I still loved golf like I did when I was younger, I bought new Pings, Vokey wedges, and a PLD putter (now using a Scotty Cameron). Did my handicap improve after spending four times as much? Not immediately. I’ve gotten better through practice and lessons, but it wasn’t really the clubs. But they are pretty. 😂

Best video you’ve ever done. You’re one of the only reviewers that asks the question properly. Most ask “is this older/cheaper/dtc/etc club as good as the new ping/callaway/etc?” The proper question is “is the new ping/callaway/etc really $100-250 better than this old/cheap/dtc club?” The answer is almost always no.

Would have liked to have seen the comparison between a budget Walmart set compared to the high dollar clubs. Yes, one set was substantially cheaper than the other both sets were top of the line quality clubs of there day. How would a cheap retail set compare. I could only imagine you would notice a huge decrease in distance.

I can see how in the right hands the clubs make little or no difference, but I am a mid hdcp and the forgiveness in some of the newer irons and drivers I believe do help, I have the Ping G425 and when I hit a high toe shot I am always impressed with how little distance and accuracy I lose. If nothing else just the confidence I gain with whatever club I have in hand means I have a better chance of hitting a good shot IMO. Great video btw.

It's you the golfer; not the clubs, once they are fit for purpose,. that truth is self-evident. That said it's fun researching, acquiring, testing, (discarding-not so much!). My *most* disappointing set of clubs were the set that I believed would improve my game, before I tried them. The most fun were the set I wasn't expecting when I bought a trolley bag and they were *unexpected* extras. The set of 50 year old Ping Karsten's that my brother intercepted at the tip run them close. There are a few superior ways to get better at golf than spending lots of money on clubs. I think the video demonstrates the point very well. a)Time/Practise b) Analysis/Coaching c)Beer - don't overdo it, though.

Great series of videos. It's certainly a lot to think about, and even further down this rabbit-hole, old clubs can be fit and adjusted to play really well for your swing regardless of handicap. Golf has so many variables, but one thing I can say is that the better a player is at ball-striking, the more flexibility they have with clubs, as most clubs hit from the center will perform similarly. I'm not sure that it's only important to get new tech for forgiveness if you don't strike it well, but then, that's also where lessons would be a good place to put your money. Another thing I've learned is that even after you buy a bag, fill it with clubs, plus balls, etc., paying greens fees is still not cheap! The cost of playing is actually the biggest impediment for golf being a game for anyone. p.s., I stuck around for the end and am expecting a birdie or par since you're swinging it well today... not expecting a crash and burn, but it is golf....

I have a newer set of Irons, fairway woods and driver...I purchased them back in 2009. I played quite a few rounds before it was discovered I had a cancerous spot on my left shoulder blade. After it was removed and I recovered, I went to play in a golf tournament raising money for the Shriner's Children's Hospital. The two gentlemen I played with were both beginners. It was a Texas Scramble, all the other teams had 4 players, so my youngest teammate was actually pretty long off the tee, so we both took extra drives on alternate holes. My partners only accounted for an Eagle putt on our last hole after I hit a 320 yard drive on the Par 5...which won me a $100 Callaway Gift Card. I was pretty proud of our score...as we shot a 7 under par 65. But, it just goes to show you it's not the clubs..it's the golfer! At my local club, I enjoy taking out my vintage, 1965 Wilson Staff Fluid Feel irons, and playing with them! When I hit them properly, I don't notice any difference in how they feel! And, they are really fun to play with!

Loved the series, James; great entertainment! Definitely shows, you can spend high dollars for a name or specific type of club, but those muscle back P7TW are not forgiving at all, and a budget older driver won’t go significantly shorter - short game is always king, invest the money in your game and time, not the tools.

I forget who I heard it from, but this video demonstrates it. "It's the archer, not the arrow." I think it shows with your other review videos as well. The equipment isn't all the different between manufacturers and it hasn't changed that much over the years. You might get a few extra yards, but it's all about you and your swing. If you get the equipment in the correct specs, it then comes down to you. This video helped me make up my mind to get fit on what specs I need, but go to the secondhand market to get the equipment.

I would stress the difference (might even make good content) between spending $300 on a set like this and buying a set of 14 clubs and a bag from a big box store for $300 for beginner golfers. Too often I see perspective golfers asking if a used set of top flite or Wilson all in one sets used for $200 is a good deal or not, and other golfers reply “it’ll be a good beginner set”. Giving a beginner golfer poor quality unforgiving clubs is not how you get someone in the sport. Get them a set of Cleveland hi-bore or something like that that pretty much hits the ball for you. That will get them into and keep them into golf. Good golfing James!

Awesome series! I think new clubs with better tech help higher handicaps get lower. Once you get better, the less new or newer clubs help because your skill level doesnt need the help or forgiveness. Hope i explained that well enough.

It proves that you don't need anything expensive. My bag cost me pretty much the price of a modern day driver. Where it's worth the investment is driver and especially putter. The clubs that you'll hit 40 to 50 shots with in a round. I've just bought the pxg gen 5 after watching your video upgrading from the M2.

I wish that we had good options like this in the USA. The area I live, I can't think of a single place that has a selection as good as that Golf clubs for cash location! That is insane!!!
