Girdling or circling roots can cause serious issues for your tree if they're not addressed. A girdling root is one that circles part of a tree's trunk or root flare instead of growing outwards away from the tree. Over time, as the trunk and girdling root thicken, pressure builds up and the vascular tissues in the trunk that transport water, nutrients, and sugars can be cut off.
This can lead to crown dieback in some large branches, and can cause the tree to decline or die entirely in the worst cases. To address a girdling root, it's best to do it when the tree is young and vigorous. Make sure the root flare is always exposed, and check to see if you notice any roots that are circling the stem. If so, cut one or two each winter until the issue is resolved.
To learn more about girdling roots, check these great resources:

Thought of your channel today... I was walking down the street in Baltimore and there were signs in empty old tree plots that said.. a tree is coming to this spot soon.

Very good info. I always just assumed a girdled tree was a death sentence. Didn’t even occur to me that you could remove roots while it’s young. Thanks for that advice!

We had a a teenaged Liriodendron that died during the 2010 drought. When we did an autopsy, it had a girdling root. My boss replanted it with another Tulip, and then it died during the 2022 drought. I wanted to smack him. My new boss and I looked at historic photos and saw we weren’t beholden to that genus and planted a Platanus, complete with deluxe pedicure spa treatment 😂

Oh no... I hope my bare root apple trees don't end up like this. I've only had them a year but think the pots may be too small. Time for a pot upgrade! And hopefully it's not too late. 😢

Neighborhoods especially middle class ones are notorious for landscaping companies to over mulch trees, it’s ok with winter coming and during the scorching heat but other than that you kill the tree

Do you have a list of recommended trees to plant per certain zones? We’re in Zone 6B and debating about planting a tree in our (bare) front yard.
@Andrew_the_Arborist

I'd always recommend a native oak tree, since those are the best for wildlife and provide some of the best environmental benefits. Are you looking for a big, medium, or small tree?

@@Andrew_the_Arborist we live in a neighborhood just off a golf course and have a huuuge oak tree in the back yard. It’s awesome. Looking for something medium sized for our front yard though. I believe there’s a sewer pipe running from our house to the street…somewhere in our front yard…not sure if that would play a role in certain root systems years down the road. But I’ve found old Google Street View pics of our house and the previous owners DID have a large tree in the middle of the front yard in the past. Unsure why it was removed - need to ask the neighbors

I have two native trees behind my house but found out my backyard was land-filled previously, and the former ground level around the trees might be buried 1 meter or 4 feet deep. How problematic is it?
@Andrew_the_Arborist
@Andrew_the_Arborist 5 ай бұрын
Ooo, how long ago were the trees buried? Changing the grade around an existing tree's roots can suffocate the roots of oxygen (needed for cellular respiration) and can cause decline / death.

@@Andrew_the_Arborist there's more than five years for sure. I moved in two years ago, and I needed to cut big lateral branches to reduce the inclination. Apart from that, the trees look healthy. I've already removed soil from the edge of the wall to decrease the terrace leap.
