This past March I purchased a Honda Certified Used 2021 Honda CRV from a local Honda dealership. The price was good. When going over the taxes and fees the salesperson said there is one more thing. She said there is a $1999 prep fee. She said it’s to prep the vehicle because Honda doesn’t pay them for the certification. It was to change the oil, clean it up, and anything required that Honda requires. I told her I never heard of such a thing. And if true that wasn’t my problem. She said it’s non negotiable. I said the dealership is trying to rip me off and goodbye. She got a manager. He said he would cut the fee in half. I said I thought the fee is mandatory and non negotiable. I told him if he wants a sale, removing that fee is mandatory. I got up to walk out. The fee was removed.

I'm the opposite, I'm a mechanic who goes over everything with a fine toothed comb, including doing all fluids, filters, etc up front just in case. @@wildestcowboy2668 one more thing that he did not mention was the “Carfax Report” In my findings the carfax report is only as good as the people that report accidents. I checked out cars that were involved in collisions. Body lines, new bumper skin but the crash bar pushed in, overspray, mismatched hardware, and interior panels were removed and broke the clips. These cars I speak of were at local new car dealer lots. Just a disappointment in how the industry is treating customers. Once I pointed out such things they were no longer engaged in working with me. One example is a 2018 Mazda 3 with 60k miles and an asking price of 19k. I pointed out all the above issues not to mention 4 different brands of tires they were not willing to negotiate. I quickly made up my mind not to move forward but I wasted his time making him think I was still interested. A little payback for a crappy vehicle.

Went to Kia dealer in the Phoenix AZ area to look at a used Chevy Volt. Took a long time to finally get it up front and battery was completely discharged. The test drive was a very short rectangle "turn right, turn right... " you get it. Then the negotiation thousands of dollars for Lojack, super duper ceramic nano tint and key fob insurance. Then $600 for doc fee and an outrageous registration charge. Apparently people are paying these ridiculous amounts. Oh and I pointed that over the course of 5 hours the sales department never answered the phone. I bought a one owner car from a private seller.

I was looking at a Nissan Maxima, The Car listed for 42,000.00. They wanted to charge me prep fee of 200.00 and I told them it does not need prepping because I looked at it and it is a new car. So when I showed them my trade in which had very low milage on it then another person who seen my car asked me if I would sell it to him. So when the dealer seen that they offer me little more then. I have to add prep cost of $200.00 because I cleaned up the car myself. He just looked at me. Any way I sold the car to that person for a good price. He probably saved 1500.00 on the car if he would have bought it from the dealer. I ended up going to a car broker and bought my new car.

Hey Craig! Love your content and support the hustle. I’m also a car dealer myself and 100% for clarity, good business and honesty, as awell as just simply being a good person. Love your content and would love to chat if you have the chance. As a small dealer just like you, your videos hit me with the sentiment of 50% of the time loving it and cheering it on or 50% of the time hating your guts for sharing too much unnecessary details and info on car sales hurting us dealers. Yet 100% of the time in full support of your content and cheering it on. I’m against hurtful sales , “raping the customer”, and selling garbage, but, my unnecessary unasked for and obsolete biased opinion is sometimes your videos share way too much details in the back end of things and tend to put “ALL” dealers in the bracket of being evil schemey “liars” when it’s not necessarily like that… we’re not all cheaters lol. But all in all! Keep up the videos. I love to watch others in our market and how stuff is going

Would love to get your thoughts Craig also as it relates to parts at stealerships. Just went in this week and the markup between what they were quoting me for parts on a job (and the parts from their parts dept via their website for Toyota OEM stuff) varied between 200-400%. VVti gear as an example - they were quoting $350, but I could turn around and 15s later order it via their online parts store for $190 - like what ??? Labor was also the same - Toyota was covering the work and paying dealers 2.4h under warranty but they were quoting me 4.2h (as it's per the book)... At leat it wasn't a 1400$ bill from Audit for having done little to show for it ...

Warranty = car make gets a deal on the labor hours in exchange for letting the dealer do the work. The car make is the dealers biggest customer. The parts it is common now to have 10% over list price in dealer for customer work and 20% under list online sales price. So you have a 30% spread. (List is Toyota list price)

As an ex-shop manager, I can tell you definitively that some parts can get a 1000% markup at times. Always research what the new OEM part would cost before having service done, and if the shop you go to wants to upcharge, raise it as an issue right then and there in the lobby. They’ll jump up to do damage control as they likely have customers in their lobby, and you’ll pay what’s fair and not a cent more.

Dealer tried to charge me extra for the "security system" they installed. This was after negotiations had closed, OTD price was settled and we were going over the contract. I said "I dont want it and you can pull it off, I'll wait." They took the extra charge out. The grind of sales negotiations is akin to going to the dentist for a procedure, without the health benefit. Thought about buying a Honda in Texas until I found out they loaded all the vehicles up with these high profit extras that add zero value. Came home and found a dealer that only adds what the customer wants and is willing to pay for. One of the extras, a paint protection scam, required that the vehicle be examined by the selling dealer on a regular basis. I didn't think I wanted to drive 1,000 miles one way to have this done.

In the Midwest from Chicago down to K.C., most of the Used Car Dealers are financing vehicles with mileage discrepancies and/or rebuilt titles without disclosing it to the buyer. I'm a Used Car Dealer that sell vehicles for cash (no finance) and I see dealers at these auctions i.e, paying $5k from a 2015 Chevy Impala with 250k miles, only to be financed later with 140K miles on at $11K(plus subprime interest and addons that people don't care to question)...The ultimate problem is that most buyers do not do their own VIN check or ask to see a copy of the title (which you do have a right to do upon signing 6+ years of your life away) ... If buyers do so, then 65% of these Used Car Dealers will go out of business...or they will flood most of these erroneous vehicles at the Dealer Only Auctions to the next thirsty dealer trying to do the same.

Craig rocks! Quality, Integrity, and honesty seem to be a thing of the past, yet when I get a new customer they will hee haw around my price, yet if they buy, I get accolades up the guzoo. In October 2022 I sold a 2005 Honda Civic for $8,400 (175K mi.) and to this day the buyer says he got a great deal. But like you, I went over the car with a fine tooth comb and did an oil inspection (analysis of the oil with a written report-doesn't burn oil), fluid changes all the way around - brake flush, new radiator fluid, new PS reservoir, O rings, and fluid, new pcv, high end oiled air filter, new plugs and coil packs (lifetime on coil packs), new Michelin tires, new rotors and lifetime brake pads, redid the AC coolant and Shrader valves, new alternator (lifetime warranty), FE alignment, new timing belt, water pump and pulleys et al. Also supplied endoscopic picture of all four cylinders from the spark plug hole. Also replaced front windshield, one window motor assy, and had all the windows tinted. No suspension, bearing , or strut issues found. I sold the Honda as-is, where-is, but I totally expect it to easily hit 400,00 to 500,000 miles if basic maintenance is performed and driven in a competent fashion. I had numerous people tell me I was crazy and that I wouldn't get more than $3000 to $4000 at the top. Yet one customer understood that even at $8,400, with the above work done, that the car was a steal as I had basically done a refurb that he could use as a daily driver. He has driven from Texas to Colorado numerous times and in Houston for the last nine months he hasn't had a single problem. If only people would treat others the way, they would like to be treated and understand that Quality implies a cost. Another friend who told me I was nuts bought a new KIA and now with low mileage has an oil consumption problem, yet he paid way more than the other buddy who bought my Honda. Buying an older car that has a good quality reputation and fixing it up is a great way to save tons of money.

Our local Ford Dealership advertises $5,000 off MSRP, but when you actually look at the sticker price, their advertised price after the "rebate" is still above sticker. Another dealership here does not even provide a link to the window sticker to help them with pricing above sticker. I pointed this out on their Facebook ads and they both blocked me. I have purchased a lot of new Fords throughout my lifetime, but they have lost me as a customer now.

Im real estate and sell homes. Supply & demand same as our business. You have 1 good home on the market that 10 people want to buy so by default buyers bid up the price & terms just like your example of market adjustment Thanks Craig. Very informative

The same thing happened to me the other day when I was looking for an airline ticket. Saw a good price, went through inserting all my details and then you are asked to phone them, surprise, surprise that deal had sold out and the price is now a £100.00 dearer. Goodbye.

I worked at a Cadillac dealer that sold Simonize. The detail dept was a revolving door so no one knew how to apply the treatment. They had a cabinet stuffed with boxes of the stuff that was paid for but never applied. Same dealer was famous for never installing the LPO items. We had a room stuffed full of all weather floor mats, mudflaps, grilles, wheel locks. All types of factory accessories that arrive separately from the car to the dealer to be installed.

I sold my 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6R last April for $28k. I held clear title. I rolled the 28k, and added in another 6k, and paid cash for a 2022 Hyundai Tucson. Paid full MSRP, too. What's not to like? No car payment, and a five year bumper to bumper warranty. Sometimes you gotta get lucky.

Where I live, Ontario Canada, there is a provincial law that the advertised price must be the price. Only licencing & taxes are extra. Financing is separate part of deal. If not true, can loose their dealer licence. I've not bought a car since this came in effect (last purchased in 2017) so can't comment on how it works in real life now. Thanks for you information 👍👍

This guy nails it. I bought 8 cars over the years from the same salesman. No nonsense no scams just transparent and honest. Did he make money off me yes. Did he make enough to buy a house on the beach no. However he got his beach house by all the referrals. And with technology today you should be honest and transparent because if your a crook it doesn't take long for the whole world to know.

I operated the same way... I fixed everything and went above and beyond. Stupid me. Gotta just shine it up and take pics. The stupid fees for junk like door guards, floor mats, paint protection, dealer fees, omg... these dealers need to go bankrupt. I will not shed 1 tear for them.

Last time I had a pre-approved loan with my bank to purchase a brand new car, the dealer refused to use my bank, they want their plans, of course, my 2.5 interest rate was not good enough and they wanted me to sign into a 20APR loans, nope, I am buying a car not care about buying also a huge loan. Its insane the issues you get for buying cars, I usually prefer buying from a user-user than dealers, cash only, the dealer refused the cash.

Awesome video, Craig! Regarding how CarGurus ranks cars, to me it doesn't matter how they default rank them because I always sort them the way that I want to whether it's by price, best value, location, etc. You make a great point about how the cheapest car may not actually end up being the cheapest once you repair all the issues that aren't disclosed in the listing.

thats why I havent able to purchase a brand new car, that 20k goes all to 40k out of the door, insane, and you try to sell it just out of the door and the price goes down to 17k.

Rusty Jones, anybody! The last new car I bought was in 2016 and I had a trade-in. I used Edmunds to determine a price for the car and my trade-in. Based on that, I told the dealer that I wanted to see a specific number at the bottom of the invoice. They could manipulate the price of the car, the value of the trade-in and whatever bs fees/extras they would charge as long as the number at the bottom of the sheet was X. Had to do some fine tuning but, I got very close to X and it made the process a lot easier.

Craig, your videos are absolutely the best! Great insights on the car buying experience. FYI on solar, your monthly spend just gives them an idea of your usage (KWh)/Demand (KW) and how big of an array you will need. Mind you, they MAY use this to pay more attention to the large consumers...

The market adjustment seems like when you still owe money on your trade in and they roll it over into your new car purchase so essentially your going to be upside down on your loan from the start. I went to a Nissan dealer and they had the market adjustment thing and the salesman said that yeah the vehicle is higher in price but your trade in is worth more too. I have a 1991 Nissan 300zx TT so I wonder how that would work when technically the book value is basically nothing but its a highly desirable car?
