In episode 2 and episode 3, when Fern asked Frieren, "Are we searching for Blue Moon Weed for Himmel?" and "why are we clearing this beach for a fake grimoire as a reward?" she answered "I'm doing this for myself." The reason for the shift from 'basic attack magic' (Zolltrack) to spells manipulating physical objects was given in previous episodes. Basic attack magic is incredibly destructive, but easily blocked with 'basic defensive magic', which was developed specifically to counter Zolltrack. And while the basic shield *can* block other attacks, it is far less optimised to deal with physical force compared to magical force. We already knew it uses up a lot of mana normally, but Richter explained that it becomes exponentially more mana-hungry when blocking things it's not supposed to. And so the natural next step in offensive spell evolution was to shoot physical objects, because that will drain the defender faster or even outright overwhelm the shield... as we saw when Richter started trying, and then when Kanne was finally able to do something.
@giantWarioАй бұрын
Which funnily enough, is completely unnecessary as Frieren and Fern both often prove. Yeah sure, basic defensive magic now block Zoltraak. But who cares? Those shields take considerably more mana to cast than Zoltraak and Zoltraak is the fastest spell in the world. When Fern, already a quick caster, starts spamming Zoltraak, every enemy mages have no choice but to stay on the defensive until they run out of mana or show an opening. In other words, Zoltraak is *still* the deadliest spell in the world but most mages don't realize it since it's so basic. Yes it's basic but that just means it's simple to use, easy to aim and quick. There's a reason why fans nicknamed Fern Zoltraak Zoltraak-47, that's essentially what it is. Fern is basically using an AK-47 while every other mage considers it useless because they all wear body armor. So they all decided to build some crazy unwieldy weapons to try and get through that armor in one strike. But you don't need to get through it in one strike. You just need to keep shooting.
@folcwinep.pywackett8517Ай бұрын
You are spot on. Spells take time to cast, and the more complex a spell, the longer it takes. That means a strong, fast warrior like Stark can cut deeply into Lügner and almost cut him in half. But Lügner uses blood magic so he just takes his blood and counter-attacks Stark. Fern was trained by Frieren to block spells individually to save mana which you see in her fight with Lügner. Modern mages are vulnerable to Super Warriors like Stark who strike quickly or Old Fashioned mages like Fern who conserve their mana and hide their own. Kanne turns tables because Full Metal Material transformation of water is more powerful than Richter's Earth Magic because water has more mass than earth and we saw what a mass of water can do to a mage shield. Mass and firepower as @giantWario explains is all that is needed.

The allegory of the restaurant is beautiful in this episode. Like the world in which they live, it exists across time but inevitably changes. When Frieren tells the party of heroes that she's found there are some flavors she can't ever experience again, she's not just talking about food -- she may be remembering Flamme, but her words definitely foreshadow the loss of Himmel, which awaits her in a future she's not anticipating. Then when we cut to the present and she's sitting with Fern and Stark, fully appreciating their company, she thinks about the flavors being much better now. Yet another "nothing happens" episode in which a rich helping of the show's central theme is served up.

Now that I have finally caught up on these reacts, I can't not speak on at least one of my *many* thoughts about the ever beautiful and tragic relationship between Himmel and Frieren: The way I read their relationship as we've seen it so far, is very similar to Flexie's. I think Himmel was in love with Frieren, I think Frieren was completely unaware, and I think Himmel chose to keep his feelings to himself, knowing that Frieren could not return his feelings due to her nature as an elf... At least... not in his lifetime. My personal take on it is that I genuinely believe that Frieren is in the process of falling in love with Himmel now in the present we are watching, from remembering their time together with a new perspective, and having had enough time (by elf standards) to actually process her emotions and feelings. If that's the case, then we are watching both the most beautiful and tragic love story of our lifetime. A love forming across the very bounds of time itself. Himmel set all these seeds for after his passing, of statues, reminders of his presence through his legacy as a hero, gifts she gave her, and through the memories created with her, with words that he knew she would not fully understand at the time. Frieren said in the first episode that she wished she had "gotten to know him better", I think we are watching Frieren *getting* to know him. Through her memories, through the marks he left on peoples lives and the world, and the marks he left on her. Now that she is getting to properly know him, she is slowly falling deeper and deeper in love in return. One detail that solidifies this theory to me, is from the Ending song (which happened to not change between cour's btw). Not only is it clearly sung from Frieren's perspective and the lyrics paint a picture of reminiscence and bittersweet pain over love for someone lost, but in the song the narrative "I" refers to Himmel as "anata" in the chorus. Which, is only significant when you know the cultural context behind that word in Japanese. In short, although it is simply translated as "you", it is the most intimate way you can refer to someone in the language, it is reserved for old married couples and/or long time lovers. I don't think the choice of that particular word in the ED song is an accident. (edit: I just listened to the two Opening themes again for the first time in a long time, and I couldn't help but note that in the second Opening "anata" is also used, even more frequently. Yet in the first Opening, even though a "you" is referred to many times in the lyrics, "anata" is never used. This could be considered all coincidence, but I can't help but feel it reflects Frieren's growing love for Himmel. Especially since the lyrics of Opening #1 seem to describe the reflections of Frieren shortly after Himmel's death.)

Beautiful reaction video to Frieren, EP 22. Yes, that one quick scene at the girls party where we see Frieren smiling and enjoying herself with Fern, Kanne, and Lawine, shows how far Frieren has come since EP 1. Himmel did change her, and she is beginning to understand that. Stark crying in pain from Fern love taps and here he took down a Dragon single handedly and was badly bloodied by Lügner and Linie has got to be Super Humorous and shows that Stark has a crush on Fern. Übel pursuing Land appears to be more than interest in his clone spell, but more like Romance, like the deadly kind.

I think these last episodes really showed how incredibly intelligent Flamme was. She knew she would probably never have enough mana to fight the Demon King herself so she took Frieren under her wings trained her and then told her to spend the next 1000 years growing her mana. She gave Frieren a strategy to fight (by suppressing her mana) that denoted a deep understanding about demon society and she made sure that humans would devellop magic as to be able to withstand the demon's attack until frieren acumulated enought mana. That's why Fireren says that even after a thousand years she is still dancing in the palm of her master. And the craziest thing is that it worked, Flamme created a guided missile that took a thousand year to strike its target. So many things could have gone wrong, but Flamme's magical skills, pedagogy and political acumen allowed her to kill the Demon King through her student and thus ensure the survival of the human, dwarf and probably elf race. She really is more of a Machiavel than a Dumbledore. PS :A note on prononciation. In this world almost everybody's names tend to be german (the exception often being demons) but people tht come from the north tend to have germanic names (Himmel, Ubel, Stark Heither) while the people that come from the south tend to have names with more french origins (Flamme, Methode, Sense) so that's how I would pronounce them. It's not really a cannon rule, (Fern comes from the south and has a very german name) but that's a general tendency throughout the anime and manga.

I like the approach that the food that Frieren is eating has changed, but it has changed for the better, this gives an idea that changes can also be good things, and about Himmel's speech, the idea of wanting to be remembered, it shows a little selfishness in him to do something wanting something in return, this is not a wrong thing to do, and it shows Himmel's human side in demonstrating this, and this probably explains why Himmel was never able to pull the sword from the stone, because his intentions, as good as they were in helping people, there was in him a feeling of wanting to be remembered.

I really like that optimistic theme which runs through this series, that progress happens and things get better as time passes: humans turn the devastating demonic Zoltraak into ordinary offensive magic, the restaurant's food has improved, the entire world is now living in an era of peace after the Demon King's depredations. It's a nice twist from most fantasy anime, where old magic is always better and there are lost superior civilizations and magic is fading as the world is passing.

1:55 I think it's a difference in principles. When Fern and Frieren fight other human mages, they fight to neutralize, not to kill. That's why Fern is taught by Frieren that basic magic is enough for modern mages. They turn fights into battles of attrition and force other mages to run out of mana. On the flip side, in a war setting, modern mages would fight to kill. It would be too risky to fight a war of attrition, so their magic has evolved to bypassing or destroying basic defensive spells, which haven't changed much since their creation. It should also be noted that white Zoltraak is specialized in killing demons, not people. Fern and Frieren are highly specialized combatants. They specifically kill monsters and demons, not people, so their control and skill with the white Zoltraak is leagues above what a regular mage is capable of.

Not that it is subtle or anything....but it's always fun to watch people experience the Himmel scenes and then the modern day scenes understanding that his intention behind his actions was always just future stuff for Frieren....her not being alone...or her having "aha" moments when she experiences a scenario again but this time Fern or someone is in her shoes and Frieren gets an alternate perspective like "ohhhhh......thats why he said/did that...." Personally I think there's a few reasons for the changes to magic. As Richter noted, the "basic defensive magic" was designed to counter Zoltraak, and it's a bit of a brute force approach: fast to deploy and strong, but mana-hungry... and even more mana-hungry when asked to defend against physical attacks, so moving to manipulating physical objects is the next step in the offense/defence arms race. I think also though the imperative with spells has changed: in the time of the Party of Heroes, combat magic was much more a tool: it needed to fight demons, it needed to be simple, effective, and fast to deploy so anything else was extraneous. It could put up with a lack of refinement to get there. Since the Demon King's defeat though, I'd guess the imperative is changing: it's becoming more academic, people have time to refine and theorise... and want to put their own mark on things. To put it in firearms terms they're spending a lot of time on the range theorising about what the perfect setup is, but few have seen an actual firefight where what really matters is that it reliably goes "bang" and puts a round roughly where intended when you pull the trigger [Insert "ZoltraAK47" joke here]. Note Wirbel's magic, as someone who still uses his magic regularly in combat and views it as a tool, is described as being "completely without character".
@reaurtАй бұрын
Good point, I think you're right that Fern has benefited from the heritage of three genius mages, from Serie to Flamme to Frieren. I think there's probably two other factors at play with Fern's dominance, besides her academic lineage. First, she's naturally talented and driven. Frieren notes in the first or second episode that Fern was already very talented in mana control, even as a little child. Second, I think human mage society as a whole is probably less effective at training efficient battle magic, because the Demon King is dead and the constant massive war is not at play. Frieren says at some point in an earlier episode that there are fewer mages now, and they usually stay in magic cities these days, relative to the time during the war with the Demon King. This suggests a shift in mage society in a number of ways. Human magic has clearly advanced in most areas since that time, but there's probably less emphasis on every human mage learning how to efficiently crush foes (demons).

Himmel know had he confesses his feeling there might be a chance they have a romantic relationship, but he chooses not to say anything is because it might put Frieren in sadness for many hundreds years to come, instead he made statues and planted many memories all over the land so she will always feel his presence. Food related speculation regarding mages and other mana manipulators such as our warrior Stark. My notion is that mana users may *directly* convert food into their mana. This may impact upon your concerns about Frieren's digestion, but it may also be involved with the relative rareness of mages in society. Fern had once said it didn't have to be magic, which I find interesting. It does seem like magic (such as the lamp) is fairly common, but relatively few go into the field. Perhaps it is hard to reliably have access to the spare food needed to build up any level of mana reserves. Combine that with the extensive time commitment to learn magic and one could see even useful spells drifting out of use.

Basic attack magic (zoltrak) is used to fight demons, it consumes a lot of mana (compared to spells involving physical objects) and it can be blocked by defense magic (which as far as I remember demons don't use). It's been 30 years since the demon king was defeated and even if they're still fighting the remnants of the army, the war itself is over so most of these mages (especially the younger ones) have probably never seen a demon. There's no point in them specializing in demon killing magic. The only reason frieren is so adamant in teaching fern only that kind of magic is because of her backstory, and the only reason they are so good using it is because of their insane pool of mana which they can use to overwhelm their enemies or on the case of frieren, being so skillful as to aim at the gaps of defense magic.

Your question about why not everyone's concealing mana will be answered later on in the show :)

Fern is the type that might have regret the next day when the digestion problems begin. But Frieren? Even during the worst parts of it, she’s going to be thinking “worth it” and do it again later.

It's anime! No matter how much they eat, they won't put on a single gram! 🤣 Having said that, you should check out another anime - RE: Creators. They were eating away and the protagonist asked the heroes the same question!

I don't know if it's stated or just implied but casting magic seems to eat up a great deal of physical energy not just mana. Throw in that frieren is almost constantly exerting herself keeping her mana in check it makes sense that she would need to eat alot after casting big magic.

I'd love to see your reaction to the full Frieren OP 1 video by Yoasobi, its essentially an official AMV and is stunning.

basic magic or making something out of nothing is need more mana, fern and frieren have more mana pool since i bet freiren also train fern to increase her mana pool since she was a kid. but ordinary people pick something more convienent magic that affect environment that doesnt need more mana than big laser beam. just look at denken, i bet hes mana pool not that low but only need Daosdorg and Catastravia to making him lose all the mana. correct me if im wrong tho. edit: stark eat the same as himmel because freiren recommended him that, you can see in the subtitle.

The show is perfectly paced out, imo. The season ends at the most perfect & predictable spot for manga readers. Makes sense why they went with 28 episodes, to end there.

I remember in some stories magic users will not get fat because magic burns calories. Maybe it is like that in this world.

I keep forgetting to mention it, but I noticed my name as the video ended and realized my KZbin name is very different. 😅 I'm Dean Morton, and this KZbin account is old AF and I don't think I can change "undertaker4250" to anything else. 😅🤣 Sorry this comment isn't Frieren related. Hahah

In my opinion this anime wins “ anime of the year “ i love this show so much. But when you finish this you should try and watch “ Re Zero Starting Life In Another World “ it’s a very good show

Most mages don't have the skill or mana levels to do what Frieren and Fern do. Fern and Frieren are the 1% of the 1%. Magic also has morphed from Demon fighting to people fighting for most mages. So they have changed their tactics to suit it. We have forgotten a ton of useful things in our society because they have become less useful, or a more efficient way has come about.
