Try a simple self powered set, swan OS-10, maybe some edifiers. Something cheap that won’t break the bank. That way you can Play with speaker placement and get an idea of how sound plays in a room. Speakers are super fun and you shouldn’t stress out over the “rules” of hi fi, just plug n play and you’ll figure out what you like.
@ChrisStoneinator11 ай бұрын
If you want to get into speakers, pay absolutely no attention to whatever advice the headphone community has to offer. 1. Don’t buy cheap electronics off Amazon. 2. Be ready to consider way more factors when purchasing speakers; will they play nice with not just your preferences, but your equipment, your room and your living situation? And I’m not just talking about whether the frequency responses compliment each other well. With this in mind, the hype speakers/amps more than likely WILL NOT WORK FOR YOU. You have to make your own specific choice, not just get a good product. 3. Sensitivity and impedance are a big deal when pairing speakers and amps. Be prepared to acquire some relevant electronics knowledge if you don’t have it already from looking into headphones. 4. The best value is often had by dividing spending in half between speakers and amps. E.g. £300 speaker with £300 amp. How much to spend on the source is left as an exercise to the reader, but if you’re into headphones you’ve got one already.

I took the manual PDF and put it in the cad software to generate dimensions of the fronts, knowing that they are 15mm (info in the description) + a friend of mine gave me an old speaker box after alpha 50 evo, so it's pretty similar. I managed to perfectly reproduce the shape of the front panel and the whole box itself, including custom, 'perforated' bass reflex. THING IS: They originally are active speakers with two amps per speaker. I was thinking of a few designs, either replicating this - putting separate crossovers and running each driver independently, so 2 stereo amps, one for lows one for highs. Other idea was just turning them passive. There are ready to buy active spekaer amp kits/backplates but I wanted to make this a little more custom + I have got already amps that collect dust mostly (class D, cheap) so getting new ones just for this projects seems not right What would you do?

I went through a few sets of powered monitors including these but eventually just went with some passives and a micca amp because they ALL hiss to some degree. As speakers you listen to across the room, they're fine, but at a desk the hiss drove me nuts

Have basically the same exact setup, except it’s at my desk and I have T8Vs instead of JBLs. They curb stomp my PC38X and modhouse Argons and I came to the conclusion that the money I spent on headphones was a waste in comparison.

I agree that the JBL horns are amazing. I would also recommend the Studio 530s which I believe sound even better, having owned both. You can also get the 530s for as low as $199 on their refurb store from time to time. No one does value like JBL, but higher end speakers absolutely dominate all over these little guys. That being said 99% of people don't know what they're missing and ignorance is definitely bliss. Calling these speakers perfect for 99% of people is totally right.

Using thier MK308s in a 9.4.6 Atmos setup, really incredible speakers for theater use. Front LCRs are crossed at 30Hz with dedicated LSR310s subwoofers behind the screen and below the center speaker apart from the 4 main subwoofers. It creates a strong screen presence esp for action movies and dialogues, far far better than many of the towers.

So if you are using the powered JBL 308s for HT use, you are using a multichannel processor/preamp to control them, I assume? Since the 308 only take balanced inputs which one did you get? I couldn't find any with XLR outputs for less than $2K which out of my budget.

As an owner of JBL 305s and 306Ps I would steer clear from these speakers. They have nice qualities about them but the high levels of distortion they possess not only ruin the sound quality but ruin their SPL capabilities. I would not recommend these for midfield use. The sound falls apart when cranked up. Measurements point back this up. My go to budget speakers are Adam T5/7Vs which are better in pretty much every way. I've done a home theater with Adam S3Vs and Adam T7Vs and the results are truly incredible. The T series speaker sound pretty close to the S series so they blend seamlessly with each other. T7V would be great fronts for a stereo or HT system with subs in the mix. 306P's cannot compare. The sound quality and sound output are far superior on the Adams.

How could I use these as desktop speakers? Edit: Would you please recommend a few DACs to drive these? perhaps a range from affordable to no budget buyers, personally my budget is around $100, but i would consider $200

I have these also, they are my second favorite desktop speaker. My favorite pair is my $60 pair of OSD Nero Studio 5 but I think they discontinued them. I also have the 8" Mark II and the 10"JBL LSR310S sub. It's a great setup especially considering the price tag, you really can't beat them.

Screw the speaker thing, I want to hear you do the "I have a special set of skills" routine. What I am saying is your future is in voice over if you are not already doing so. Quite unique. Hints of Rod Serling, hints of Nicholsen, hints of Shatner, hints of all the greats.....since Klippel speakers are a fine deal, but voices could be copywrited...... You are welcome, but listen to the wise man typing here.

Would be nice to see a review from you of some older JBL classics like the L112 or 120Ti or L166 or just the good old L100, or maybe the big boi 250Ti. They are all still very nice speakers today, and they have the beautiful vintage look.

i love my JBLs to be honest i went to a radio station and they have a bunch of them inside the recording studio and in the monitoring side, so when i was choosing for my setup i inclued that, which won. i love how i can position them facing forwards instead of inwards so it looks better if i took a picture of them.

I own the 308's. Love them. Music - spoken - anything audio - my favorite speakers. I actually own nothing but JBL speakers since - well - more than 30 years. Always a great sound at an affordable price point.

I use 3 - 308s and 2 - 305s and the 310 sub for mixing atmos in 5.1, eventually I would like to have a 7.1.4 sometime in my future but these speakers are great for mixing

Try a dedicated Dac with Volume control, I've had to many to mention but they can really contour the sound to your room. Schitt, PS Audio makes a killer Gain Cell Dac that cost more than the speakers but wow good synergy, Also Schitt has a cheap Bitfrost with Volume that while more forward was also more wide making the speaker resemble a Magnapan but without the exact point source of image. But nice never the less. Always buy from a place you can return. While the JBLs as stated show flaws, they do become more forgiving with older Equipment that has tone control's. Fun video, they make good PC speakers for larger rooms, 10 x 12.

I have the Elac BS243.3 on my desk with a Rotel RB850, and I'm thinking about getting some Monitors, the BS243.3 sound great actually and because they go pretty low, even movies have enough bass.

I got a set of 305s in an endorsement for my band from Harman when they just came out. We were the content for a showcase they did for the new pro line and they had the full lineup of studio monitors setup in the control room for people to listen (those m2's are also ridiculous btw). I immediately asked if they could throw in a set of the 305s once i heard what they sounded like. I had them as my a/b with the rokit rp8's in the studio and mostly used the jbl's only turning on the krk's to impress a client with a mix or whatever for some more bass. Since then i bought a set of 306's for the home setup and they are equally awesome.

I have a pair of 305s. They're fine. Very utilitarian. For the money they're pretty great. Definitely a low budget hifi hack. They reproduce music well, they're fun, punchy, but the sound is not beautiful. Midrange can be a little congested. But for the price no complaints. Great for modern music, good for production If I was editing video, producing podcasts or doing some other kind of production, these would be all I need.

Ive owned 306P, Adam T7V, and Focal FX80 and used them along side Genelec 8050b as second sets and would be fine mixing a record on any of the three. Fact is, the lower level speakers available today are fantastic and better than a lot of mid range nearfields from decades ago. I'd rather mix on any of those than a set of NS10 every day of the week.
@CockatooDude Жыл бұрын
Out of curiosity (because I've never mixed on speakers before) what do you think of the old adage of "if it sounds good on an NS10, it'll sound good on anything"?
@kniferideaudio Жыл бұрын
I own a pair of NS10t and found that to be so not true that they live in my garage for when I'm changing the oil or doing yard work. I was never able tl acclimate to the midrange of those and they have zero low end so it is really easy to make a mix that is way too scooped and tubby in the end. @@CockatooDude
