River sand , not silicon sand, then grass seed. Mulch will still have sharp pieces of wood that will poke holes in people's tents. Rubber mulch is usually made from old tires and often has metal in it from the steel belts. I'm a landscaper from the patron state of shooting things (TN).

15:47 I would put down sod/grass on the camp site so it raises the dirt about 2-3 inches to prevent any rain build up or standing water seeping into the tents, and also the roots of the sod/grass will give the dirt more stronger structure to hold together when tents or other things are being staked into the ground and will hold stakes in the ground better, and hopefully will prevent the dirt from gettin torn up and the camp site losing its structure over time…! I could go forever why sod would be a great choice but there is very many options out there..! Love you OFF THE RANCH/ Matt… glad to see the name is back to normal!

My friend got me a black Demolition Ranch jacket this Christmas and man let me tell you what, this is the best jacket I've had in a while, probably forever. rugged, heavy, thick and the fit is superior. Tough zipper, big hood, form fitting design and even has inside pockets. A real man's jacket (or women's). Big Carhartt fan and this beats my Carhartt. If you like Carhartt but want a next level product and DR merch buy this jacket. You will not regret it. I'll have to buy my friend her own DR jacket now. 💪🔥

It is also toxic to Replies and Amphibians (the cedar oil to be precise) so snakes will almost always go around any area with a cedar mulch covering. Note, it needs to be replaced somewhat frequently especially after a couple soakings in moderately heavy rain.

@oldhillbillybuckkowalski 15 сағат бұрын
@ChrisWijtmans Home Depot, some Wal-Mart locations, and pet supply wholesale distributors will usually sell 100% Cedar Mulch. Because it often sold for either pet rodent bedding ( has some odor absorption, low clumping factors (compared to Pine wood mulch) and the rodents usually won't find it tasty enough to gorge themselves into a bowel obstruction, and Cedar oils contained in Cedar mulch are toxic to reptiles and amphibians, as well as many creepy crawly invertebrates it is often marketed as a pest deterent material that is human/pet safe. Because of these two specific uses it is specifically marketed for, if the bag says 100% Cedar oil, and isn't imported from any of the typical Chinese sites, Pakistan, or other less reliable places it will be 100% Cedar mulch.

Mulch also catches on fire easily; not a good thing in dry climates around campsites.
@oldhillbillybuckkowalski
@oldhillbillybuckkowalski 11 сағат бұрын
@JoeyJoJoJr0 true, but then so does everything all around and through6 a campsite in South Texas/Hill County when it's 102° and you're surrounded by Oak, Mesquite, and Mountain Cedar flinging leaves and dropping branches from mid October until mid April making all natural mulch 365 days per year. There are also fire retardant spray able or powder form, Unless each campsite is swept 20×20 to the dirt, and all overhanging branches/limbs less than 20 ft from ground are cut off the risk will certainly be present. Or permanent firepits appropriately sized and posted rules for tent distance from firepit, a dome cover to use whenever nobody will be visually monitoring the fire, a couple of good fire extinguishers (deposit taken during checking, refunded upon turning them in as they were received) and someone who cruises through the campgrounds regularly to make sure nobody is acting stupid. A proactive staff is the first line of defense, and easy to follow rules that the guests are made aware of and educated about why these rules are necessary is the second line. And calling in an expert that can evaluate the property's risk factors, recommend mitigation techniques, and provide a blueprint for a safe campsite before any of the sites are actually set up which also gives each site a close to identical size, shape, and features making maintenance and monitoring easier. And yet even if every possible precaution is made he is all but guaranteed to have at least 1 or 2, "Damn, that coulda been really bad in 2 more minutes." situations and a couple of actually serious fires over a 10 year span. It's the nature of the beast when you have lots of people you've never met bringing alcohol, wives, and fire into a very hot, dry, and wooded area that is probably subject to some gusty days and occasional lighting storms. That's why if you open up a campground to yhe general public in our area and try to get fire coverage the expenses are enormous and the requirements for mitigation and prevention procedures look like Congressional budget legislation, 1500 pages of tiny print. I faced some of that when I built my small shooting range on my property. Started getting enough people that suddenly the idea of home owners and property insurance wasn't going to do anything about something happening related to a range and 25 miles SE of San Antonio we have so many grass and brush fires every summer it's scary to think about. Insurance with any real coverage was so high and their inspector had so many things I'd have to do I said screw it. Now it's open to close friends only and no groups over 5 people and no children under 10 without prior approval.

What we have been doing for the past 15 years for land that has been taken away from heavy storms on the great lakes is chain link fence with 6 foot rebar bent in half and pinned in then sprayed a wild grass mix over it within a week it starts to grow and roots really deep to this day no issues we have even installed drainage pipes that go a degree up hill so the water doesn't blast out and erroad everything what doesn't make it weeps out. Just to stop the surface from falling off the ledge

For your tent sites, it is good to have a base of gravel, then a layer of sand above. this will give better drainage. some soil & grass seed (or sod rolls) on top. You'd want about 6-8" for steaks to go in before hitting rocks. Another option would be to build tent boxes like we do at mountaineering sites. 6"x6" lumber, make a 15ft sq box with a good topsoil with higher sand mix for drainage then grass around. Overlanding & boondocking is also becoming much more popular. Might be good for a few open car parking sites so people can park to set up trailer or roof-top tents with awning. I have put in over 3000 hours of trail maintenance & site restorations in the Pacific NW.

My opinions on what to use on the ground at the new riverside campsites from a decades-long camper: Do NOT use mulch at the campsites. It draws in bugs and mold and isn't comfortable under a tent. Don't use crushed stone either, it will sink down into the dirt, and weeds will eventually grow up through it and it also isn't comfortable under a tent. My first choice is decomposed granite. It will compact down, choke out weeds, doesn't get muddy, is low maintenance and gives a nice level surface. The other option would be to plant grass as long as the sites are well drained. It's soft underfoot and keeps cool, however, it will require some maintenance.

I DON'T THINK I WOULD PITCH MY TENT THERE UNLESS IT WAS ON STILTS. You might want to check out the downhill water flow during a heavy rain. That tent site is halfway down a hill and there is nothing more frustrating than watching a heavy rain flood your tent as it runs down hill and fills the tent or at the very least washes under your tent. I've actually had to take people into my tent that were flooded out in a similar site in the George Washington National Forest of Virginia. They thought being in view of the stream would be awesome until they found themselves floating on their air mattress.

The trail looks great so does everything else. The tent spots, grass with a well tamped dirt would be fine. Look for grass that can take a beating in your area. Drainage is key. Some places have platforms made of wood to put tent on and off the ground. Some places use big gravel that people complain about. Some use a mix of pea gravel and sand and dirt. So I guess it’s up to you. Just some thoughts. ❤️🇨🇦

You do need to have access to the traile with a side by side in case someone gets hurt, you can get to them. On the camp sites, you need to look at the drainage and make sure water cannot get into the tent site. In the Army, I learned that the hard way. slope it down from the river side, slope it down from the pasture side, put in a small drainage ditch lined with grave, or even a french drain that pulls the water away. The rubber mulch idea is a good one. Or even the rubber panels they use in palygrounds.

That's nice progress on the trails, eventually you should see about getting some proper mountain bikers out there and give them a space to design and construct a bunch of single track mountain bike only trails on the hill sides. Get 5 - 10 miles of a labyrinth of single track made. It's less space needed than it may seem at first. You have alot of crossing trails and such. Also can have some pretty sharp inclines/banked curves. Mountain bikers love that stuff.

I recommend growing grass for a full year before having people camp on it! It will help keep the dirt in place and help provide good insulation from the ground. It will mean you would have to push opening up the campsites a year, but that will make a difference in the long run and create a stabile camping spot for the future.

For the campgrounds, put them close together. That doesn’t mean you have to assign them close but multi or large families would like to stay closer and large events would have more opportunities for people to camp. Also, maybe look into putting used synthetic athletic turf on the camp area. It would be good to put a tent on yet durable enough to be out in the elements.

Grass is hard to maintain but always nice under a tent. Big though is the grade. Make sure the tent pad grade is higher than the surrounding area so rain water doesn't stream across it and erode the pad.

A good thing to think about with those trails is to have it atv accessible for if someone gets hurt or have a medical emergency you and the emergency personnel can get to them faster, and have all the trails mapped out for that reason also.

Putting landing zones here and there with wider access trails to areas at intervals, out of sight from the trail but near enough for ready access...or plan a side by side/golf cart trail roughly parallelling the bike/hike trails. Useful for the less fit or seniors who still want to enjoy the whole place...

don't know if you can get it in usa but a good campsite base would be recycled tyres (ground up tyre tread ) its used on kids play grounds under the high play toys (not under the fire pit or bbq )

Really would recommend building a restroom, maybe even shower, facility for the tent camping area or some campers might end up seeing more of their fellow campers than they want

A self powered pull behind mulcher that could be towed by a 4 wheeler would be awesome to clean up the trail of all the fallen/removed branches and as a bonus provide a trail bed with the end result. Plus the mulcher will come in handy at other portions of the ranch.

i would strongly recommend your seed those camp sites with grass. I know it will take time and a few cuts for it to thicken out and mature but those grass roots will hole the soil. without it that will just wash away and sink
