The last part of the video made me remind of a thing from my childhood!! My mom is from the 80s, so when I was a kid in the 00s, she gave me her old barbies and their clothes. That included a lingerie set, with frilly babydoll set and a white/green lacy robe, that she made herself when she was a preteen (she was a seamstress for most of her life) I remember using them for my "rich" barbies lol, they were one of my holy grails of my barbie collection, and as a kid, it made me wonder why we never got more nightwear for dolls.

If I may, to give some cultural context as a woman who lived though the 1980s as a child, the context for a doll in lingerie would be far less risqué than you might think. Women of that time wore lingerie daily...camisoles over bras, slips, even teddies as an underlayer over bras and under blouses or dresses. It was a normal part of dressing for work or dressing to socialize. People were generally more socially active, and standards of dress were generally higher, perhaps not as formal as the constructed undergarments of the 50s and 60s, definitely more organic, but definitely still an essential layer as part of getting dressed. I watched my mom get ready for parties (of which there were many more), social events for work and just visiting at friends or going to dinner, a hundred times in my childhood, and there was always lingerie as part of any outfit. It wasn't fetishized as it is now, it was part of a ladies outfit, part of being a lady...like hats and gloves used to be. There was nothing edgy about a doll in a camisole, nor the word lingerie. Imagine a grown woman preparing for an evening out, sitting at her dressing table doing her makeup in her teddy and a robe, in her nylons, waiting for the last finishing touch of her dress. It was, to us at the time, glamorous, ladylike and quite proper, little girls would aspire to be so ladylike as their Mom, getting ready to go out. So barbie was a way to play at that aspiration.

@bivianaromero7083 As a child of the 80s,and not to taint the beauty of your moment... Fuck slips and panty hose... I hated both as a child. My mom used to make me wear that shit occasionally and was always confused by the fact that they always mysteriously disappeared... OOPSIE... I was raised like a little boy, but forced to wear girl shit. Just because I was born a girl, didn't mean I wanted dresses and pink shit... I wanted tac boots.

I was a little girl in the 80's and lingerie for Barbie sounded completely normal to me. Lingerie was everywhere, on fashion catalogs, in the shops' windows, even at the supermarket, with lace and everything . So it was not surprising Barbie had some too. I even hated when I couldn't find a panty for my barbie to wear before anything else 😅 Pantyless Barbie? That wouldn't do!!! 😂

Correcting that one blurb about build lily: Lily was NOT a gag gift for men, she was bought like anime figures and collectible figures of today. She even had clothing to buy separately and were even bought for children. She wasn’t ‘Promiscuous” in the sense of a prostitute, it was just known that she had a sex drive and wasn’t a virgin. Thats it. Lily was a secretary mascot for a paper, not some pornstar or what have you. Also, mattel used the fact that the creator of lily didn’t understand english to essentially rob them legally and when lily’s creator realized what happened, it was too late. And the american legal system is actually quite racist.

I was 8 in 1988, and was obsessed with this particular doll line. However, they were way too spicy for my helmet-haired church lady of a mother. It is no surprise I grew up into a BJD collector with a huge trove of undies and nighties for my line-up.

I owned the Beauty Secrets Christie doll and a Creata Flower Princess doll. I also remember buying lingerie fashion packs. I use to pretend my Barbies were doing commercials like I saw on TV. Mind you, I am an 80s kid. So to have panties and bras for your doll made it seem more realistic. This was a great video, so keep it up.
@louisemorris158111 ай бұрын
What a lovely nostalgia filled video you put together. Back in the 80s lingerie was just the word used for non streetwear. Ladies wore a lot more underwear then, full slips, half slips, full girdles (my grandma right up until her death in 2005 always wore a girdle that was a bra and corset all in one with stocking fasteners on the bottom edge then big stretch cotton knickers on top ….very glamorous, not) panty girdles (what my mum wore in the 60s/70s), bras, long line bras, garter belts because stockings were still commonplace and we didn’t have stay up ones, housecoats, nighties and pjs the list goes on and on. It was all to be found in the ladies lingerie section of department stores or in dedicated shops well into the 80s and beyond- Nana was buying her long line girdles somewhere and I wore a slip or half slip under some of my work dresses so they didn’t cling/ride up. Lingerie wasn’t “saucy” it was just what women wore, (“intimate apparel” however…) and a scented sachet (pronounced sashay) for their lingerie drawer was a very popular gift to give your female relatives They often sold at school fetes or craft fairs and were taught as a simple sewing project. They were usually filled with dried lavender or rose petals as I recall. I also remember that dolls with fabric underpants were not that unusual even my miniature dolls had knickers on. Now I feel old lol.

I was a little girl in the 80's. Practically every woman and many girls I knew had scented sachets in their underwear drawer. Often lavender, rose, or lilac, but sometimes one matching a favorite brand of perfume. I had a lilac one. As far as lingerie, the connotation has changed. Lingerie was a normal part of dressing - sure, it included things like bras and panties, but also stuff like satin dressing gowns and camisoles with lace, slips, pretty nightgowns, stuff like that. It was pretty common to see women in media or your own mom in satin robes and nylons putting on makeup and doing their hair. It wasnt a sexy thing so much as a glamor thing.
@stevieandthebarbiesАй бұрын
Bearing in mind that laundry detergents were pretty vile smelling in the 80s and fabric softener was generally unscented, little fabric bags filled with lavender were the usual way to keep clothes fresh between washing and wearing. Sandalwood and cedar were also used to keep moths away. As for the use of the word “lingerie” - it was the department stores’ traditional way of being “refined” and is still used today in many stores. One of the criticisms of Barbie was that often she didn’t have underwear - so Mattel started to paint knickers onto the dolls, and later briefs became part of the moulding.

The Heather's Secret example on the illustration DOES make me think "sexy clothing" but you could say the same about bikinis, and dolls are always in those. I'm trying to put myself in the mindset of this being astonishingly risqué but it's not easy lol.

Bild Lilli was the same gift as a Hawaiian figurine for a car. Ruth bought it at a CHILDREN'S store. She had a huge collection of clothes, a house, a car and a movie. Mattel used the post-war attitude towards the Germans and repeated over and over again that this doll was made for men, although this was absolutely not the case. Plus, if you can't translate this comic, then just don't use this material. Bild Lilli, in fact, was quite a big feminist)))
@noraunhappy11 ай бұрын
Also worth noting that Mattel didn’t buy Bild Lilli and get rid of her to clean up Barbie’s image. They did it to try to clean up Mattel’s image because they 100% ripped off Bild Lilli to create the original Barbie. But it was difficult for Lilli’s creator to actually seek legal recompense for that due to him not actually having much money and also the international aspect of it if I remember correctly.

@@noraunhappy Yes, Mattel has a pretty aggressive policy. Now they have abandoned Barbie, her quality is terrible, they are trying to do something with Monster High. I'm very glad that MGA was able to put them in their place. This is the first time Mattel couldn't do anything. Before that there were Maxie, Jem and the holograms, and even the popular American girl in the USA, Mattel, destroyed everything. Maybe this was good for their business, but I don’t buy Mattel products just on principle.

So, it was overtly wrong to have those scented pouches for your underwear drawer? I mean, I don't see anything wrong with the clothing pieces as that was like you said something fashion was doing. Also lingerie doesn't always mean sexy, let's feast with our eyes before unwrapping the present type of item.

Sachets (sa shays) were pretty common irl, when I was coming up. I had an Avon one in my undies drawer for years.

it's really interesting how opinions on things change, and i don't think it's too hot of a take to point out the comedy in the people of the 70s and 80s being more comfortable with dolls having underwear than they are today despite the world generally being considered more progressive. won't go into the minutiae because this is a doll video lmao just find it interesting and fun to point out. i'm a huge fashion doll person as an adult and seeing the opinions on dolls from other adults online is always interesting even if it can be disheartening. popular fashion dolls nowadays tend to come with very deliberately painted and noticable underwear bottoms despite how basically all dolls i had growing up having at the most a texture to imply undies. and conversely, even in a doll line with painted underwear, LOL OMG dolls have pronounced nipples. so, it's a mixed bag. regardless of that, i watch a lot of doll reviewers, restylers, and repainters and almost all of them have started covering up the dolls' "privates" in some way even if they don't have any details top or bottom. i think this might be a mix of youtube itself trying to censor for nudity (though i'd hope the almighty algorithm could distinguish a doll from a human...) and viewer outcry. i think the latter might be a loud minority since it's pretty ridiculous to be upset over a genital-less and nipple-less doll being nude when the majority of children play with said dolls nude after losing all of the clothes (speaking from experience). one restyler makes bralettes and cami tops out of what appears to be colorful vinyl to censor the dolls' nudity and another repainter puts masking tape over them. really interesting, if a little disheartening. perhaps this is a "something something societal censorship for the wrong reasons" situation. i'll stop rambling, just really into social behaviors and dolls lmao as for the actual video, i really enjoyed watching this! great introduction to your channel. subscribed as soon as i finished the video, can't wait to see more.

I’ve seen doll videos on YT where the doll has post-it notes stuck to the body to cover up any sources of complaint! But these are sites that often state they have content suitable for children. Other sites specify that the content is aimed at adult doll collectors.
