Welcome to the mindbodygreen podcast! Each week, host Jason Wachob, founder and co-CEO of mindbodygreen, engages in open, honest conversations with the people shaping the world of well-being. Today’s featured guest is Dave Asprey, a professional biohacker and the founder and chairman of Bulletproof.
“If you're deficient in minerals, it doesn't matter how hard you try-your body can't make the electricity it's supposed to," he says. In this episode, Dave and Jason discuss all of the nutrition and exercise tricks that will give you ultimate gains (and the ones you are better off without), plus:
0:00-2:08 Intro
2:08-6:23 The “why” behind Dave’s newest book
6:23-9:47 The diet fundamentals for a healthier life

What about people who love to exercise and have for years? I find it hard to believe they are harming themselves. My husband is an iron worker, who works hard for hours. Hes' done this for 25 years. He's never gone to the gym, but he feels depressed if he doesn't do physical work, because hes so used to it. He's the strongest person I know, and can work hard for hours and hours without taking a break. He acts and appears healthier than most people his age.

Yes, when we regularly do physical activity our body gets ready to do that activity, like it is looking forward to it. You can tell it is energized when it is time to work out, it anticipates it if you do it regularly.

This was very interesting. I have noticed over the years that a lot of people, including myself have hurt themselves trying to make themselves better. I have experimented with my diet trying to improve it and in the last two years I have introduced homegrown sprouts into my diet. Broccoli and sunflower. I noticed when I eat them. After a while I would get very tired. When I stop eating them. I felt better. I noticed at one point he said eating cold oatmeal was one of the stupidest things you could do. I have been eating cold oatmeal for breakfast with fruit and nuts and powdered milk for decades. I'm going to get his book when it comes out. Even though this was a very negative interview I got a lot of interesting information and I was surprised that his sense of humor. It was a Very enjoyable interview.

Great podcast and thankyou for stating that those of us with different diet preferences (keto, vegan) are similar in philosophy. :) We CAN get along! 14 yrs vegan and I won't change despite the high number of constant digs in podcasts and discussions.. We are all on a health journey and the real war is with conventional diets and overly processed sugary junk.. which is what most people consume every day

@druelleB I was a vegetarian for 32 years. It wrecked my health. Couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. It’s not obvious when it’s happening until you are damaged. Believe me, it was the hardest thing I had ever had to acknowledge to myself and everyone around, friends and family. It sucked, but I was desperately seeking health. I started myself on bone broth, then chicken. Slowly regaining the digestive enzymes needed to properly and fully take advantage of the animal sourced amino acids. Today, I feel better then I ever remember feeling. There is nothing I would want be true more trie then vegan/vegetarian diets to be the right diet for humans. It sounds great, a lofty idea for the humanitarian in us but it’s just not a good thing for us. Just saying.

Fantastic talk 🙂 Dave is very good at articulating what I'm thinking... In many places, I know what is correct, but do it anyway... I know Phytic Acid will deplete minerals, but I snacked on Cashews, and other nuts until I had low Iron and Hemoglobin... and Gaud knows what else is now deficient... There is so much more... I'll shut-up now 🙂

I loved the Animal Farm reference by Mr. Asprey (pigs always made rules but after getting caught breaking their own rules they would rewrite the rule to accommodate themselves. The pigs took over the farm and made everything much worse, dystopian levels of worse, for everyone. EDIT: Worse for everyone except the pigs. The pigs were doing nothing and just enjoying themselves at the expense of everyone else).

As a physician who is just trying to get my patients to eat a little more fiber (evil plants according to you guys) and move a little more (also apparently a waste of time unless you go to a fancy lab with an AI bike) these recommendations are an impossibility. Humans love to hear good news about bad habits and telling them it’s ok to have some butter and exercise less gives them cart Blanche to continue to eat like shit and sit on the couch as long as their heart rate goes up on their walk to the fridge for another snack.

I have been working out smart not long for the last decade and ever since I gave birth to my first child. I exactly work out three times a week for 5 minutes at a high intensity with brakes in between. I will admit that I do go once a week to the gym where I actually do run one mile at the highest possible intensity. That includes running at 9 minute mile for 2 minutes and then taking 2 minutes break and doing this again four times. I have not gained any weight since I decrease the amount of exercising by at least five times a week and I have also retained my muscle. Good video and I just wonder if David still eats a lot of bacon. The reason why I am asking is because bacon contains a AGEs or advanced glycation and products which age us. This is one of the things I could never understand and they love for bacon, which is one of the most aging foods. 😃

In those communities on earth with the most centenarians, "dieting" is the last thing to be followed, also supplements of any kind. Instead, they eat rather monotonous and simple foods, far from being a "western recommended balanced diet" -- but they are happy people. In my rather simple opinion, there is something like "chemist" in our body, constantly watching our predominant moods, beliefs, attitudes and thoughts -- and according to what it observes, it turns crap into a vitamin or vitamin into a crap. We always seek solutions outside of ourselves, instead of seeing how we are killing ourselves with toxic thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and poor stress management. I am 78, haven't seen a doctor in 18 years, and not fussing much about dieting. But of course, to each their own, I am not a normative dude, whatever works for you -- even a placebo diet is O.K..

@@hamzaali-qz4ci Yes, just like if you take a medicine, if you take too little there will no therapeutic effect, if too much you can have a detrimental effect. You need the minimum effective dose to create a positive effect and no more which may have a negative effect. I’ve found that intense brief exercise that is orthopedically correct fits the bill. Frequency should be 2-3 days a week depending on your ability to make inroads into your recovery. More intensity, more inroads and longer recovery. Just my take, 30 years of being a strength coach.

Starbucks uses a water purifier which removes the minerals but preserves the equipment in the stores from build up! I drink coffee at home with local high mineral tap water. Chase and Sanborn is a good cheap coffee better than Starbucks. Sourdough is the way to go! I make sourdough by leaving my mix out to ferment. Refrigeration preseves the food, but not the people who eat it. Raw milk left out turns to buttermilk. Pasturized milk left out becomes intollerable to drink, maybe if i reheat it and pour over ice that might work! You can't buy raw milk with food stamps. I wonder if wearing copper jewelry is sufficient and take it off when the skin turns green. My skin rarely turns green from wearing copper.

You stabbed me in the heart ! IT TAKES 2 YEARS TO GET HALF OF THE GARBAGE OILS OUT OF MY SYSTEM ? 32:47 Ok, Dave; you may stab me in the heart anytime that I need it. I am now going to take a stick of butter to any Chinese restaurant that I eat 'Mushroom Egg Foo Young' at, and ask the cook to scrape the grill and borrow my butter to fry mine with. Aarre Peltomaa of Mississauga, Ontario p.s. I was wondering why I felt slightly nauseous after frying my eggs in Extra Virgin Olive Oil. I now believe that it was because the EVOO was destroyed by the high heat. Another paradigm smashed. I think that I'm going to join the paradigm smashed every week club ! (no such club).

Not buying it. It feels so much like one of these get rich quick with no investment, time, skill or experience by just giving me your money conn. He should begin by. describing in detail that study/ies supposedly backing his claim for his ultra minimalistic cardio and resistance training strategy. I haven't looked into it yet but I'm not expecting to find anything of statistical substance. I'd love to hear him debate Peter Attiia regarding exercise intensity/frequency/duration!

Considering the price tag, I would give it the benefit of the doubt. It might just be one of those ways for rich people to trade their money for time, but that isn't worth it for the average person.

Just do the sprints. It take seconds. Then go on and do the slow zone two cardio. It’s very likely that you need both. Every training program uses a big volume of low intensity with speed work once a week. People grind out the work in the middle which really is not useful.

This does not sound correct, more like a desperate attempt to sell books. Plus I would never recommend only exercising a few minutes a few times a week, unless you wish a short life. The number one killer of men and women is cardiovascular disease, exercise (much more than a few minutes a day) is needed. Recommending to eat white bread will spike your blood sugar level, help encourage diabetes, cause kidney stones and a long list of other issues. You lose weight from a calorie deficit, evidently not something he could do. Sounds like he enjoys Corn Flakes. I’m sure the study he referenced was heavily influenced by the Colorado weed dispensaries…like his logic. Someone could write several books on the reckless and life shortening advice in this video.

Maybe. But Asprey only claimed that his exercise protocol improved VO2max and longevity. There is more than that to running a marathon; e.g. conditioning the body to be able to run that far, fueling, developing grit, etc.
