As I saw that puffin weave its way through the seagulls to get its food back to its nest I was on my feet shouting "Go on, my son!" the way I do when I see an England player weaving through the opposition towards goal.

Warming of the ocean is probably their greatest threat as it means that the sand eels they depend on are forced into deeper waters where it is cooler. Extreme temperature fluctuations at sea can also lead to reduced breeding success among sandeels too.

Do not underestimate puffins, they can dive and chase after the fish, the seagulls are just being smart

Gulls aren’t built for diving underwater to catch fish like puffins, terns, gannets and guillemots, they can only bob along the surface and try and grab any fish that come too near, so thievery is the easiest and most effective way for them to gain food. They can still catch fish but it needs to be very shallow water and even then they usually don’t manage to catch anything the majority of the time. I’ll sometimes see them in the winter trying to catch small minnows in streams, they will do a short dive putting their heads just below the water but I’ve only ever seen them catch a fish once
