2018-19 history - After years of incorporating dancers into all the band's performances, KOGA and Hana in separate interviews said they were tired of the configuration and something needed to change or they were done. (ADD: Hana was tired of singing AND drumming, so she wanted to do one or the other but not both.) In 2018 it was already known that Mai, their long-time performer, was retiring from the band in December, so KOGA started scouting new blood that summer. My impression is she was looking for a full-time singer/frontman and another girl to initially act as a hype-girl so the transition from old to new wouldn't be too jarring for the audiences. In January 2019 the two new people were selected and the band started practicing for a tour that would start in March. Shortly before the new members were to be introduced the singer quit and the band was thrown into a lurch, and KOGA had to convince Angie that her position was still secure. Since the band's practices for the new tour was already well underway, It was quickly decided that Hana would have to be the new singer/frontman, so she would move to stage front and play guitar, and the band would try to find a new drummer before the tour began. Angie's role would be determined on the fly. At about the same time yuri, who was previously known to the band, happened to attend a group concert that included the GS members, and afterward she stopped to chat. Three days later KOGA gave her a call and asked her if she wanted to audition. The new tour began in March, and they spent the next 7 months polishing their act so they were ready to make a DVD of their final performance in October, which is where this clip was taken from. ADD: While all the early 2019 chaos was happening the band had to finish a song and do the art-work for their upcoming "GACHA10 BEST" album, which is why Angie is on the album cover and sings on the album, but yuri doesn't appear because she joined a few weeks after Angie. The 2019 tour was in support of this album.

About Yuri, she had just been hired by BRIDEAR when she met the GS members and auditionned for them. She had to make a choice ... Luckily for Bridear, they found Natsumi soon after, who is actually the perfect drummer for the band, so everything is fine in the end (but you can still find some promotional Bridear pictures with Yuri on it).

Thanks for watching more Gacharic Spin =) This particular performance is from their 10th anniversary concert on Oct 14, 2019. The full concert is fantastic, and there are quite a few clips on KZbin. One of the things that's amazing to me is that band had been together in its current formation for about 7 or 8 months at the time the above performance was recorded. Angie joined the band February 2019. From interviews, I think Koga found Angie at a high school festival, thought she was interesting and asked her to audition. Angie didn't really have any experience performing on stage. She's only 17 years old in this video. As she's gained experience, the band has grown to rely on her more and more. Originally Angie was hired as a hype person. Her official designated role is still "mic performer". When Angie joined, the band was also planning on adding a new lead vocalist at the same time. They had practiced with the Angie and the other member for a while. About 5 days before they announced the new line up, their new lead vocalist got cold feet and quit. The band was trying to figure out what to do, and pivoted: instead of trying to find another vocalist, Hana would move up to play guitar and sing. They decided to look for a new drummer instead, and called up Yuri to audition. She joined in March 2019. Pragmatic is a really good way to describe how the band deals with problems. One last thing, even though this comment is already long-winded: the band is making their January 10th Zepp Haneda concert available on Zaiko starting Saturday. It's a concert to celebrate Angie's Coming of Age Day. It requires you to buy a ticket for the stream, though. If you check their official twitter (gachapin_info), they have posted some short performance clips to promote the concert.

2019 is when they picked up the the two nubes. Angie was either 17 or 18 here.the stage had some weird setup that made hana decide to drop back on the the drums for a few songs. The also did next stage with two drums. Koga is tone deaf so she does the shouty parts. Someone referred to her vocals as wailing here. Also about angie ; the saw her in a highschool choir and pretty much decided to hire her but did do an interview first. Koga asked her how she would describe herself in one word. She replied, “HIRED!!!.”

yes, he would love this. The whole album (of the same name) was written(commisioned?) for the paraolympics for 2020; Hana's lyrics are almost always motivational, even if sometimes harshly sarcastic or satiric (common sense destroyer, and dream eating shark are some of my favorites ...), but this just reinforces that, recognition of their supportiveness by the "Para-Project". One way to describe this is if Rush took a 17yr old angry rapper to a rave ... kzbin.info/www/bejne/omnLdmqOobeei6M I'm not really sure that Yuri's even recorded any drums yet? (maternity leave '21). I believe this is the first video with her & therefore this latest/final incarnation of the band; this was on youtube only days (18, had to look it up ;) after she joined (despite babyfaced & 4'10", she was born in '95...) Do keep in mind, Angie, who'd joined only weeks before Yuri, is barely 17, & still 17 in that 2019 concert (orange pants). Huge courage to stand in front of such a band and have an undefined role as non-dancing dancer, 3rd best singer, no musical instrument, and not even officially the MC (Koga does that), just hype girl trying to participate in the talent show extravaganza!
@donkorte802 жыл бұрын
The three dancers were hire with little or no expectation of singing. They were referred to as performers and we usually called them dancers. Angie, however, was hired as a Performer/ vocalist. She was hired as a singer. The energizer bunny of singers but still a singer. Hana is still the lead vocalist for most fans but the fact that Angie was lead vocals on the two videos they had on the most recent album tells you the direction things are headed… Btw…word has it that they went to some kind of performance at a local high school and spotted angie in the choir… I’m guessing that her hair was neither red nor pink at that performance…so her voice must have been fairly impressive to be noticed by Hana and company…

I'm happy to have been one of the early suggesters of GS. After listening to you talk about music a few times I could tell you would totally get them. * WARNING - LONG COMMENT * If you read all of this, thanks for taking the time to do so! I appreciate that you get flooded with huge comments like this all the time so completely understand if you don't read it. *** I'm so glad you are continuing to investigate Gacharic Spin! Your reactions are fantastically thoughtful and in-depth as well. This performance is wonderful, they also have a version of them performing this on toy instruments on their channel which is equal parts hilarious and absolutely incredible in terms of how good they make a bunch of cheap toys sound. You can find it here if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqvSqYGNg9N5ptk Watching Oreo absolutely rip out her solo on a toy melodica is insane, and Hana playing two toy drum kits at once so she can have double kick (and constantly needing to move them back into position) is hilarious and awesome. A few things related to comments you made throughout the video: * Hana's drum-set with curved and flared toms is a vintage North Drums set - these are drums that were manufactured in the 70's by a sadly short lived American company called North Drums, they had that distinct shape shape to change the sound and character of the resonant head to make a more bell like and directed sound. It's been the main kit she uses for Gacharic Spin for a number of years (you'll see the same North Drums kit in their 2013 Delicious live DVD for example). For Doll$Boxx she normally plays a really nice TAMA kit. * Tomo-zo's tasteful guitar playing - I couldn't agree more. She's got all the chops you could want but, she's always thinking melody and phrasing first rather than "how many notes can I squeeze in?". If a fast run makes sense she can and will include it. If you play guitar yourself I also strongly recommend taking the time to work through transcribing her rhythm guitar playing. You'll find such a wealth of fantastic musical ideas and it's been my textbook on effective part writing for years. She knows she can trust the fundamental harmony to Koga's bass and Oreo's keys so she often finds other things she can do to elaborate on that. She often includes things like tapping, harmonics, whammy pedal, arpeggios, pedal points, single note runs, octaves and syncopated rhythms, often various combinations of all of these, rather than just strumming chords. Alternately if the keys or bass are getting busier she knows to pull back and focus on providing a solid base the other instruments can play off of and target full chords or simple melodic ideas. I'll also recommend taking a listen to her guitar solo in this track again and listen to what the drums are doing behind it during the last 4 bars. It's 4 bars of drum fill behind the guitar solo where the drums are doing some ridiculously complicated stuff but perfectly locked in together, and during the last bar Tomo does that lovely triplet run as the solo climax whilst the drums are doing a unison 16th notes pattern together. If everyone isn't completely locked that would instantly turn into a complete mess, but they make it sound completely natural! * Everyone in this band can provide vocals. Drummer Yuri is also a talented singer, as is guitarist Tomo-zo (there is always at least one song with Tomo-zo on lead vocals on every Gacharic Spin album). Koga for a long time was the only one who didn't really "sing" - she provided raps and chants but had admitted to being embarrassed about her singing abilities (or lack thereof) in interviews. However she's been putting a lot of practice into her singing during the lockdown and she provided a number of melodic backing vocals to their most recent album and has also started joining in with the close harmony singing live. Angie was originally hired as an MC/rapper/dancer/hypeman and as you mentioned she was not a trained singer at all. Whilst looking for vocalists Koga had spotted her performing at a high school talent show however and was so impressed with her attitude and energy she brought she approached her afterwards and asked her to audition for the band. At the time in 2018 Gacharic Spin had recently lost their last performer who had been with the band since 2013, and they were planning to reconfigure the band to bring in a new lead vocalist, Angie on raps/chants/hype, with Hana and Oreo stepping back from lead vocals so they could focus on their respective instruments. They had Angie and a new vocalist lined up, but just a few days before they announced it the new vocalist got cold feet and stepped out. They knew they wanted Angie but finding a new lead vocalist had been so painful they decided instead for Hana to switch to guitar and lead vocals and get a drummer instead (this idea had already been tested a while before when Tomo-zo was hospitalised during one of their tours and Hana had switched to guitar + vocals in her stead and Tamu Murata, later of Nemophila fame, had filled in on drums). They knew Yuri from before having toured with her band Lagoon and had seen how good she was, and knowing that Lagoon was now defunct, they asked her to audition at short notice, instantly clicked, and she was in the band within a few days of the previously lined up singer stepping back. This also plays into what you talked about regarding the pragmatism of the band. They have the skills and drive to roll with the punches fate hands them and find a way to turn it to their advantage. * Regarding what to call Koga, just calling her Koga is fine. Online she normally refers to herself as "チョッパ" (Chopper) and people refer to her as any of "Koga", "Chopper" or "FCK" (also what she has on the headstocks of her signature basses). * Hana's name is pronounced just like the British name "Hannah" by the way. I hope you will continue exploring this wonderful band. If you want a few suggestions for next steps here's a couple of recommendations: * LosT AngeL (Live 2019) - from the same show as the clip you reacted to here, Hana's on guitar and vocals for this one, Angie shows off some of her unclean vocal skills, Tomo-zo rips up a devastating guitar solo, and the whole band is just totally on fire: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lV7FfoRnm8ikeLM * Kishikaisei Forever (MV) - this is a rip of a bonus MV included on their 2020 album Gold Dash. They go very prog-metal on this one (it was actually written for them by Ohmura Takayoshi, one of the regular Kami Band members for Babymetal, he's very close friends with the band and they participate every year in his birthday concert with the rest of the Kami band). Tomo-zo will be appearing on his next live stream in a week as well! Gacharic Spin write 99% of their own stuff, but they also love collaborating with different artists so you'll find collab's like this dotted over their back catalogue. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZmnFlJxoj8-Vitk * DOLL$BOXX - Shout Down / KARAKURI TOWN / Sekai wa Kitto Ai wo Shitteru nda (Live 2018) - DOLL$BOXX is a side project/collaboration of Gacharic Spin with power metal vocalist Fuki. Whilst still covering a huge number of influences and genre territory, it is much more focused on metal. Hana finds plenty of opportunity to demonstrate her skills at unclean vocals. I appreciate this is a longer video (~13 minutes) but if you're willing to do something of that length you'll be rewarded with one of the most impressive live performance clips committed to history. The band is absolutely shredding and the incredible and powerful vocal harmonies and arrangements they can do with Fuki, Hana, Oreo and Tomo is stunning. EDIT: Forgot to include link, here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4Cvi2WdgayqgpY

Oh, one other thing I'll add - you mentioned having Gacharic Spin pigeon-holed - a dangerous move! They can and will surprise you! Whilst Koga is reknowned for her extreme skills at slap bass (to the point that it's in her name, the "Chopper" part refers to the Japanese term for slap bass, "chopping") she's anything but a one trick pony! You'll find various techniques and ideas incorporated all over her playing, from Jaco Pastorious style melodic lines, finger style, pick style, tapping, and more!

It's interesting how so many reactors talk about what genre to fit Gacharic Spin into. I think it's quite simple: their genre *is* Gacharic Spin! I don't think I've heard anyone else quite like them. I discovered GS shortly before I Wish I came out. My first experience was the Mindset MV, and I was blown away! By far the best song of 2021, and one of the best I've heard in over 20 years. Absolutely astounding musicianship! I Wish I was equally brilliant, but that first experience with Mindset is unforgettable! I looked into their back story, and have listened to as much of their earlier work as I've been able to find on KZbin. And I have to say, this current lineup with Angie out front is by far their best. Their sound, especially live, is so much more powerful, rockier, and mature than their earlier stuff. Just compare the Lost Angel MV with Armmy to the live version with Angie from 2019, turning a pretty decent bit of electropop into an absolutely rip-roaring bring the house down wall of sound, with Angie's harsh vocalisation replacing the highly compressed ones of the original, plus all of the instrumentation raised to a higher level, and a faster beat. Similarly the live version of Juicy Beats, compared with the original MV. There's just no comparison -- Gacharic Spin as of now is orders of magnitude better than ever before. They discovered an absolute gem in Angie, especially when you consider she was not intended originally to be a main singer. I can't wait to see where they go from here!
@PrymalChaos2 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I think I had the exact same experience as you. Mindset - I wish I, then down the rabbit hole. Also I think you’re dead right about the genre thing. In fact so many of the bands from Japan are the same. I’ve had people saying the same thing about Band-Maid being a genre unto themselves. I think the influences over there are just incredibly diverse, and the general level of musicianship makes them less restricted.

That was a really nice video. It's all those little things, like actually learning their names (you wouldn't believe how many channels show more than a couple videos by one band and still have no clue who's who), noticing that in all that sonic chaos TOMO-ZO's solo is actually really held back, and she knows what NOT to play, and simply remembering what's different from the last song you've seen.... That sounds like minor things, but it makes it much more engaging, and it is a gripe I have with the majority of reaction channels. It also doesn't hurt when you get the feeling you know what you're talking about :) That's just my convoluted way of saying thank you for these videos, and if you ever should get to ANKIMO (Tower of the blood especially), or even something like 妖精帝國 (絶 anyone?) i'd just love to hear your thoughts. KOGA is the bass player's family name - her real name is Michiko Koga. The CHOPPER refers to "chopping", the Japanese name for "slapping" - the slap & pop bass style that was popularized by Larry Graham of 60's funk band Sly & the Family Stone. I believe the "F" was a mis-translation of the first letter of the word "pheromone", a behavior changing chemical. I'm guessing the full F CHOPPER KOGA stage name was supposed to be a reference to the raw, animalistic funk bass style she utilized in the punk band she formed while still in high school, THE PINK PANDA.
@Frahamen2 жыл бұрын

@@Frahamen Japanese doesn't have an exact replacement word for "pheromone" so it is written as the phonetic representation "フェロモン". For extra trivia, both Kanami and Tomo-zo started out using Addictone guitars but switch to PRS as their mainline guitars.
@FourBleats2 жыл бұрын
You are spot on with TOMO-ZO - tasteful is exactly the right word. I think having performers makes more sense in Japan due to the huge idol segment of their music industry. While idols mostly operate in the world of pop, there's a growing alternative idol movement that explores other musical genres, including metal, punk, prog and techno. If you're aware of the likes of BABYMETAL, BiSH, PassCode and Yanakoto Sotto Mute, that context will help in understanding what Japanese bands like Gacharic Spin are doing. Japan still seems to value entertainment, while in the west we seem to have focused more on technical musicianship. Trying to think of examples of western bands having performers and the only one that springs to mind is Bez from the Happy Mondays.
@PrymalChaos2 жыл бұрын
Ok cool yeah, I've been trying to quantify how Gacharic Spin fits in to the overall Japanese scene. They are extremely proficient players, but their energy seems to lean more towards entertainment at all costs. At least from the perspective of the live videos I've seen. Thanks for your insight!

For a completely different side of Gacharic Spin try "Generation Gap" (ジェネレーションギャップ), where the musicians tripled their roles in a very funny video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3fPo4J3htiZaLM

kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqvSqYGNg9N5ptk is IMO the definitive version you watch! As you say the fact they can all turn their hands to vocals is key. In this very alternative version you get to appreciate another side to these ladies; as women & mothers, there are a few videos on line showing them teaching children to have fun with music in a music therapy fashion & also just having fun with kids in a kindergarten. The other drummer (Yuri) is currently pregnant which is giving Hana more time to go front. I wish I was one of their kids... how great will the next generation be with these mothers!? What you say is this video is very true (both about the Internets influence & the rock band characters as archetypes). If that's 1/3 of Angelina I wonder what attitude the whole package has? I call Chopper, Chopper as have heard other band members call her that, as opposed to Koga or Michiko which is her given name.

That video is the best thing I've seen in ages. That's for the tip. Also that's for the heads up on Chopper.

Great reaction. Gacharic Spin and Lovebites are my favourite female bands from Japan. I recommend Redline (live) from the former and Spellbound from the latter. Here's a link to the best version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mprdmZ1sfJ11gsU It's a fun, somewhat surprising song from them. Oh, and definitely give Doll$Boxx a listen as well. It's a shame that many great, if not better, bands tend to get overshadowed simply by what's more popular. Gacharic Spin being a good example, so I'm glad that you've returned to them yet again. I have to admit that I have contributed to that problem as well in the past, but I try to actively recommend more obscure stuff now. So maybe check out Riot Sugar by Boris. One of my favourite Japanese bands and there are hardly any reactions to them out there, despite them having a considerable following and a lot of acclaim among music enthusiasts. Much more so than many of the other Japanese bands popular with reactors, actually. It goes to show that there is somewhat of a reaction bubble. You wouldn't get a lot of views, probably, but I would definitely watch it haha.
@PrymalChaos2 жыл бұрын
I'll take a look, thank you! There definitely is a reaction bubble. It's pretty astute of you to notice actually. It's a little sad because I'll do a video that I know is a formative and important piece of the genre puzzle, a band with an enormous number of fans, and it will get 3-400 views, but if I happen to do something that has been reacted to a bunch, it can get 2000 views over night. At this point I have about 6000 followers, so people probably expect that if I post anything at all that it will get at least 3000ish views, but it's really not like that.. you are lucky if you get 10%.. unless the video itself is currently going viral. I think, in time once I've garnered a little more respect in the YT community and among my viewers, that ratio should climb, but I'm definitely not there yet. One of the things I really want to do is to draw attention to local and unsigned bands, but it's not worth it for them if people won't click on the thumbnail just because they see me, if that makes sense.

Hey Dude - thanks for the shout out and reaction - this is my youtube handle - I was pretty sure you'd be doing more GS anyway, but I wanted to make the donation irrespective for your interesting and appreciative response - Band Maid and others such as Lovebites tend to get more recognition, but there's just something about the personalities of these ladies that grabs me, and looks like the same for you too 😁

When i saw them live koga is the leader through and through. For the meet and greet she's the one organizing the table, moving the otber members around, taking the lead on the greeting. And she did a lot on stage between the tracks to make sure things were moving forward.
