Arkansas fan here, and believe it or not, there's one guy I'd put ahead of Chad Morris on worst college football coaches over the last 10 years- Ellis Johnson took over a 12-2 Southern Miss team, and they went 0-12 the following year. Of course, Southern Miss is not a Power 5 team, but had been a really good Group of 5 team. Chad Morris at Arkansas is the worst Power 5 hire, but Ellis Johnson is easily the worst FBS hire, not to mention it took a few more years for Southern Miss to recover from that 0-12 season

Gary Andersen’s short tenure at Wisconsin nearly wrecked the Wisconsin program as he alienated the high school coaches, tried to change their offense model recruiting small o linemen, and quit suddenly when he couldn’t get JC college transfers and other recruits into Wisconsin because of their academic requirements. Turned out to be a blessing for the program

My thoughts- Moorhead - disappointing but not bad enough for being on this list Dana - Agreed Strong - No way, Texas is debatable but the USF hire makes no sense being on this list Morris - Should be on this list but at the 10-9 spot Herman - Hell no, dude won a NY6 bowl and had 4 quality seasons Kelly - Disagree, had a decent 2020 season and seems to have the program on the rise Frost - Agreed, terrible hire imo Taggart - Should be on the list but not at that spot Pruitt - should be at 1 Miles - I don’t really get it, yeah he was disappointing but it wasn’t really all on him at all

100% agree with your take with Scott Frost. As a Nebraska fan, Scott Frost has definitely let me down so far. He gave Nebraska the worst start ever in his first season, shows flashes of improvement that doesn't translate into long-term success, and as for that Iowa game in 2019, where if the Huskers win they earn a bowl game, I'm still bitter. I have zero respect for coaches that settles with overtime; only time that should ever be acceptable is if you're down by 8 late. So, it bugs me that those "coaches that settles with OT" happens to be coaching my favorite team. I'd say that if Nebraska doesn't make it to a bowl game this upcoming season, they should let Frost go. That's probably too generous, as I would also like them to have a winning record. Edit: I need to add that while Frost has proven to be the biggest problem for Nebraska as coach that it is not ALL his fault, though. The QB and RB coaches have jobs to do as well; the ball-security is trash.

@@thomasdaniels6824 Nick Saban was 15-17 at Miami !! That’s called a losing record !! Saban ran off from Miami in the middle of the night to become Alabama’s head football coach, after telling the entire world “ I WILL NOT BE THE NEXT ALABAMA COACH” on national television at least a dozen times or more !!! Yet the entire time he was in contract negotiations with Alabama !! Hell, I thought Saban was suppose to be the greatest coach in the history of the world, regardless of what the sport is ?? Yet you’re gonna try to tell us that 1 single player was the reason for his shitty 15-17 win / loss record as a head coach in the NFL, right ?? I mean since Saban invented the game of football & all, you would figure that no 1 player could ever be solely responsible for Saban having that shitty ass 15 - 17 record he had in the NFL, right ?? Worst coach of the decade? Easy. Mike Jinks at Bowling Green. He took over a program that had just won three straight division titles, with two conference titles, and three recent wins over Big Ten teams. Jinks' first game - lost 77-10 to Ohio State. Fourth game - lost 77-3 to Memphis. The same Memphis team that BG played to a three point loss the previous year. He went 4-8, then 2-10, then was 1-6 when he was fired. He beat 5 MAC teams, all of which went below .500. 2 wins against FCS - both came down to the last play - and a loss to FCS. Recruiting classes dissolved quickly due to arrests and academic dropouts. Just a disaster on every front. The new coach inherited an utter mess and is cleaning it up. Also see Dan McCarney at North Texas. Lost 66-7 to Portland State of the FCS.

In Moorhead’s first season They were expected to win 10 games with a lot of production returning from 2017. In 2018 Mississippi State had the #1 defense in America, and also produced 3 first round picks. They went 8-5 though.... Truth is, the offense was abysmal, and the team was extremely undisciplined. I remember multiple games just that season where there were penalties on kickoffs and even before the first play. Moorhead was expected to be an “offensive genius,” and was everything but that... In his second season, expectations were obviously not as high after losing a lot on defense, but expected a similar record to the year prior because of Penn St transfer Tommy Stevens. While Stevens wasn’t bad, he was extremely prone to injuries. Which led to true freshman QB Garrett Shrader being the starter for the majority of the season. He was actually an upgrade over Stevens, but once again a lack of effort and abysmal play calling landed the team with a losing record. Not to mention the off the field problems... Moorhead was Chad Morris, but with a humongous foundation to build on. He just want ready for the SEC as his first P5 job. He’ll be better his second time around

@jamesmarhen 3 жыл бұрын
Reality is hiring for any job is difficult because so many factors come into play. Charlie Strong had a very good resume, Texas seemed a bad fit but USF seemed like a good one and he couldn't regain the touch. Wille Taggart went into a situation where I don't think he fully understood all of the problems surrounding the program and was borderline set up for failure but he also didn't seem ready to adjust and FSU itself didn't seem to want to give Taggart the time to do what he's good at, slowly build up a program. I agree Chad Morris was the worst and his tenure at SMU wasn't really that impressive so to me the hire from day one always seemed strange. I'm an ASU fan and we've hired the proven coaches, the up and coming young coaches, we've done it all and we're still mediocre. The outside the box hire of Herm might actually be the hire we've been waiting for but the evidence is overwhelming, hiring the right coach is extremely difficult and in some cases the problem might be more your program and not always the coach.

When there are 5 star prospects in the metro area of Austin signing with Ohio State, Clemson etc.. it’s not like unrealistic to think they could be back on top in a short time frame. The talents here, moneys never an issue and they play in a relatively weak conference.

@@ScottFisherCFB Arkansas program hasn't won a sec game in years they were trending in the right direction they played Texas a&m pretty tough that year so I say they were going in the right direction but if you fire a guy in 2 years basically some of these great coaches in the past don't make it that program was in a bad place it like they expected him to win 10 games its unreasonable

LOL what? Arkansas was at least somewhat competitive in the SEC prior to Bielema's firing. We currently didn't go winless in the SEC until Chaddy became coach. Arkansas wasn't a dumpster fire when Bielema was coach. "Trending in the right direction" my ass. Arkansas got blown out by Western Kentucky in our OWN stadium by our OWN transfer QB (Ty Storey) before Morris got fired. That's not "trending in the right direction". That's embarrassing. That was rock bottom for Arkansas football. Arkansas should be able to beat Western Kentucky by 30 with just our second stringers. Playing A&M close means nothing. We play A&M close every year. Morris was a god awful hire, and that was still prevalent at Auburn. I don't know or how you could possibly hold this opinion, especially after Sam Pittman got hired and immediately brought Arkansas back off of life support. Chad Morris is easily the worst hire in college football in the last decade and you're objectively wrong if you say otherwise.

@@MentalOutlvl6 No, being "competitive" against A&M means nothing. Hell, under fat Bret we nearly beat Alabama once or twice. "Showing progress" ... as in getting blown out by Mississippi State and Western Kentucky? Two teams we're supposed to beat? Sam Pittman didn't even have full spring or fall practices and was able to win just as many games in an all SEC schedule in just his first year than Chad Morris had COMBINED in both years on the hill. And if for some reason you still think Chad Morris was a decent coach, then please explain what the hell happened at Auburn. It's pointless trying to argue against me, a lifetime Arkansas fan. I watched (tried to watch) every game in the Chad Morris era. There are some 7A high schools in Texas that could've beaten us.

No way, especially considering the state of the program when he was hired. He didn't have a high ceiling as a head coach but we could have easily fallen apart the way the Bastards did after they fired Mangino.

@@ScottFisherCFB not really. Riley inherited a consistent 9 win program and still couldn’t win. Riley didn’t require strength and conditioning, weightlifting, or contact practices. The culture he built wasn’t about winning football games, he literally said “we had fun today” after a loss. His entire 2016 recruiting class transferred. Frost inherited a weak team, missing an entire year’s worth of recruits. Nobody in the country was winning in the first 2 years after that mess. His 3rd year was during a pandemic, and it’s not like the B1G handled that very well (no spring practice, no summer conditioning, fall practice was 3 weeks before the shortened season started). Does it suck? Yes. A lot. But Frost has had to deal with a lot more attrition and unforeseeable circumstances than Riley did. We should have hired Frost instead of Riley in 2015.
