In the mid-1950s, before his rise to stardom, Johnny was deeply involved with a woman named Clara Thompson, whom he met during one of his performances in a Detroit club. Clara was charismatic and seemingly supportive of Johnny's aspirations, but the relationship soon turned complex and tumultuous once Clara was approached by a rich brother that wanted her. She left Johnny and led to what the artist described as a "really dark period in his life." Thanks for this. Johnny was my great uncle on my dads side. He tragically passed in 2010. Lived a long life but the tricking and alcoholism caught up to him. He always told some funny stories though and was super tall (6'5) so the family called him Tree. RIP Unc. We love you!
