I think these are my favorite pencil condensers for overheads. Nice work.

I love pencil condensers for overheads. I've got an old matched set of M-Audio Pulsar pencil condensers that I use on drums. Also, since you haven't been able to get to Vancouver Island, I did my own studio tour of my studio. ;-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn2WqIefo7pjr6M

I have to admit that after I initially bought (and quickly returned) the original LA-120s I am somewhat .. well... not confident in the quality of them (threads were rusty, capsules crooked, output not matched and hyped treble. Also the sound was absolutely not anything special. Also they were insanely hot in the output. I had to put an extra pad on the mic cable for my pres to handle it (or leave the pres at super low input gain). Dont' know if I got a bad pair. Dont know. Currently using my Slate ML-2 (they knocked all others out of the park for OH.. including KM-184 (ML-2 to me sound pretty much like 184 without the hyped treble at 5-10 kHz), AKG 451, and others I tried at the same time), or my other favorites: KEL HM-1's (yep the old cheap Canadian/Chinese stuff.. AWESOME mics).. Yes, maybe these new ones are better than the old 120's? But I need a lot more good reviews to try 120's again. Sounded ok here I admit Missing some midrange maybe?. But I will say the the low end on the 120's IS good. But as I mostly low cut anything below 80-100Hz or sometimes 200 Hz I cant really use that low end.

lauten 308 is one of the coolest mics ive used in 30 years. amazing rejection. just used a pair of them on bass and guitar cabinets during a live tracking date with the full band playing live in the same room, loud drums, bass, guitar and vocals cranked through a pa system. the isolation on the guitar and bass cabinets is unreal and the mics sound wonderful. i can solo those tracks and i barely hear any bleed at all. just a tiny bit of the drums and low end.

I have the V1 version 120s, and they are great mics. I use them primarily on acoustic guitar, usually XY. Lauten makes excellent microphones.

Darrell Thorp uses Lauten-Audio, even on Foo Fighters records. I own the LA-220's. Great mics for the money.

I just got a pair of these. Was using a pair of Roswell Mini K67x's as overheads for a while and really do like them, but, on the darker side. Put up the 120s -- man,...the difference was stark, especially the way they pickup the toms. More attack/transient response and fullness in the lowend. I use the HP filter @15k and the LP filter at 150hz. Love the Lauten stuff, also own an LS-208 and a Clarion.

Lauten makes fantastic mics. I own most of them. FC-357 is my favorite. It's a kick drum God mic.

Pencil condensers are probably my favourite overhead mics. These sounded awesome, the entire kit sounded great and the La120's helped enhance them. Great video thanks Andrew. Have you dug into the UA mics at all? those are on my list to try out as well.

The ribbons sound smooth. I like the Lautens better than the ribbons in solo, but I think I might like the ribbons more in the mix. I wish we could have heard that. The Lautens sound is more focused so it's a more complete picture in solo. But with all the mics in I might not miss the focus of the Lautens and I might want that smoothness, that elasticity. More clarity, more focus, more detail isn't always what I want. The Lautens definitely sound good, but I was digging the ribbons to be honest.

Hey @Andrew Masters, the volume on your voiceover is considerably louder than when you solo the drums which makes it a bit jolting when if you turn the volume up to hear the overheads at a reasonable volume. Not sure if I’m the only one who was having difficulty going back and forth to listen to them, but it’d be great if it was just a bit more matched or you added the A/B audio comparisons at the end again with no voice in between. Appreciate the videos either way!

Hey bro, what overhead mic stand is that, and what stereo bar? I'm recording drums this Friday and using all 5211 pres. Was definitely going to bust out the LA 120s on over heads!!!

I'm struggling on the decision between these and the Austrian Audio CC8s. The LA-120s seem like a screaming deal but I'm not against spending some extra cash on the CC8s. I'll probably end up getting them both 😅

I prefer the ribbons on this kit, with LA cymbals, especially hihat sound bit harsh to my taste.
