So, it looks like they have fixed ND filters ready to go already.🤓🙌 Here’s a link: bit.ly/36Xoh1f You can get from 1 to 8 stops of fixed ND. Nice! Now we just need those circular diffusers! 👍

No filter: imgur.com/D7qbRc6 Polar Pro filter: imgur.com/s3gnYzg SLR Magic filter: imgur.com/nqbqBfb Was really unimpressed with the PolarPro Peter McKinnon VNDs. They had an uneven colour cast across the frame, with the right side of the frame skewing heavy towards cyan. You can't just do a custom white balance to corect, as it only affects half the frame and you'd then throw out the other side of the image.

Hi, Gerald. Do you have any experience with the Aputure DEC Vari-ND or the DEC LensRegain? I'd LOVE to hear your opinion on them. If you're unfamiliar: Aputure DEC Vari-ND is an EF to MFT adapter (not boosted) + wireless follow focus + 9 stop variable ND, Aputure DEC LensRegain is an EF to MFT speedbooster + wireless follow focus.

Gerald as a filmmaker with aspergers and a touch of OCD, the thoroughness of your videos is the most satisfying thing. Really preciate' ya! MKBHD became the top and most trusted tech channel on YT, and I think you will become the top filmmaker gear review channel in no time. The most trusted, comprehensive, nothing left to be desired, the kind of reviews that make you go "i dont need to listen to anyone else". You are good damn right! :) Every time I need to buy some new piece of film making kit (ND, tripod, lens, lights...) I go to Geralds channel and buy what he tells me to buy. And I was never been disappointed. I am very indecisive and he is bringing me peace of mind that I just made a good choice :) Except for Gerald and Marques, I need somebody for sports gear and maybe live choices and I will be happy :D

I just got the Summit in the mail and will give it a try shortly. Upon initial inspection, the build quality seems spot on and I like being able to apply CP with other filters easily. My only complaint is, LOL, the carry case. I wish it had a tad more room to store everything Summit related in one place and a way to attach it to a camera bag.

I am a huge fan of your channel and have always seen you as a pragmatist who values the democratisation of good design and affordability. Its surprising that you endorse a brand that seems so overtly aspirational (the packaging alone) and hardly a snip. The principle of proprietary design seems to embody everything that good design isn't. Likewise any brand that feels the need for "signature" versions of plainly functional pieces has to be a concern. Most matte boxes seem ridiculously expensive, and this really seems no exception given its proprietary bent, though I appreciate your take on that. Swing away design as an innovation at least allows quick lens change and it would be great to see similar. Principally universality and standardisation allows costs to come down and if we all want better egalitarian design, then designs/brands like this, though addressing some practical concerns, seem instinctively a step in the wrong direction. Regardless your time, consideration and valued judgment is always sincerely appreciated.

Thank you for the video. I like fixed ND filters and until I saw your comment below, I was going to hold off. Now I have something to really think about. I like my Lee system, but this is something I am considering for landscapes. I am just pricing it out in my head and thinking long term is it worth purchasing it. If only I was able to use my current filters in this system then the decision would be easier. If I choose to go with it, I may have to run it by my budget director,....I mean my wife. Thanks again. Another quality video which I felt was informative and as usual, I enjoyed it.

You should compare it to the Arri & bright tangerine line. If one wants to start small but then grow to much bigger shoots it’s almost worth it to get the proper stuff from the start. Finally starting to get my head around what would make for a good matte box and moving away from VND’s. These are probably good for certain people but it’s good to know why and be informed all the way up to the pro stuff like with the FX3, FX6, FX9 series of reviews you did which I liked. Love

Although...there is one thing they could do to enhance the matt box's abilities and that is to extend the box itselt (like a piano accordian). When on a longer lens or when light is hitting the glass of even a wide lens, being able to consertina out (slide out) the matt box is a big plus to elliminate the light hitting the lens. That way you dont need a french flag and cutter to cut the light off.

@rossfairgrieve9074 4 жыл бұрын
PolarPro say this on their website regarding the fixed NDs: "Hyper Neutral Through 1100nm Eliminates IR Contamination". From what I've seen, variable NDs seem to be pretty good at reducing IR as the two-polariser method attenuates all wavelengths more or less the same. It's generally much more of a problem with fixed ND.

Hi Gerald, Great review.... The mate box system have a lot of control premising circular CPL +ND , but I just wondered if there is an interest to have a second Polarpro PeterMcKInnon VND Mist, without mate box.. I read that the mist edition reduce a little bit the wrinkle for skin... for people filming fashion or beauty you think it's an interesting approach or only keep the VND with mate box... All the best

Sucks! I just literally opened my kit and used it in Sta. Monica Pier and lost my CPL and its case didn't even get to use it, I can't even buy a replacement cause it's sold out. - I wonder if there's another CPL I can use as an alternative for this?
@rossfairgrieve9074
@rossfairgrieve9074 4 жыл бұрын
I assume that there's no polarising effect (reducing reflections on water etc.) when using the CPL and VND setup? I'd love for that to be controllable at the same time as the VND strength but I'm pretty sure that physics would have a thing or two to say about that idea.

Would it be a bad idea, or just fine to use this matte box on a Pictor zoom lens that has a thin clear B+W protective filter on it? You would have to screw a step up ring onto the filter, then the thread plate onto the step up ring... too jank? Its a pretty light matte box, so maybe, right? Or too much risk of cross-threading? (I would be gentle and not screw it tight, of course.) I'd prefer a 95mm clamp ring, but the B+W filter would be in the way, right? I don't know... (DZOFilm Pictor zooms have 95mm front diameter and 86mm filter threads.) I could also use the Light Fly if I had to...

I really like this product, however, I find the wheel on the Stage 3 VND Basecamp Kit I just bought to be too hard to turn to achieve the Vario ND effect. It is a bit too difficult to get your finger in there to adjust the wheel as there is no room designed at the front to accommodate that, so depending on how you holding it you are at times awkwardly forced to use your fingernail at times - no fun at all. Why would PolarPro Basecamp design this so hard to get at? They figured that out on the Summit kit, but then forgot to add a flag to that kit, so no solution there either. And it's a tad too tight and requires too much effort to turn. I would prefer to turn it loose and then have a fast lock button of some kind next to the wheel. It would be an idea if they made use of hard stops so you do not have to turn it around full circle again, and it could use a marking on the wheel, a red line or white line which shows you when you are back to no ND effect, and then mark it off in 1stop, 2 stops, etc. I rather have that than push the ND toward "blue" being fully circular. PolarPro, on the next version, your designers should move the gold-brown tightening clamp to the other side and move the wheel from being on top to three O'clock if you are looking at it from behind attached to the lens. That way you could use your thumb or finger to easily turn it without having to move your hand off holding the bottom of the camera and its weight. The way you have it now you have to AWKWARDLY reach to the top and try to reach it while moving your hand off cradling the bottom of the rig and holding it steady for its weight. Gerald has it on a tripod. I would have liked to have seen him handhold the rig and adjust the wheel for a dose of why this needs an update on the next version of Bascamp. It's really clumsy at the moment. And does not need to be. PolaPro needs to do a little more product development here. Otherwise, mostly great.

Wow, this kit is really expensive once you start to build it out. I have to say, I'm not a huge fan of ah-la-carte systems like this one. You'd be better off getting a cheaper mattebox and And adding a variable ND to that. This one can run you up to $600 if you're not careful. It's a very nice kit though.

That's my concern too. If you need to switch products you have to buy all of your ND's again. Better to find one that can fit industry standard 4x5.6 ND's with empty filter trays you can leave on your glass. That way you don't keep touching the glass itself as you slide it in and out.

I like good packaging as much as the next guy, but I'd actually like to see reviewers starting to praise more efficient packaging. With that I mean, uglier easily recyclable packaging that is not only better for the environment, as it would be cheaper to produce, so that the manufacturer can lower the overall product price. Yeah, cool boxes are great, but after the unbox you just get a carrying case and the box just stays in the corner somewhere.

Recommended by Gerald: ooooo this could be worth getting. Proprietary mount: oookay maybe not. Looks like a great tool, really high quality, but the closed system nature of it is pretty off-putting for the mean time... I'd want to see several generations of this to be reassured that they weren't going to come out with a slightly different mount each time. Definitely will be keeping an eye out for if they introduce a compatibility add-on.

I was thinking about that, but since they currently offer a complete range of VND and ND as well as supports and cover every front filter size, they almost don't really need to add anything to the system. Other than that diffusion filter! But once they add that, it might be a closed system, but it's a complete one. So I don't think we're really missing out. Just my two cents.

Great vid, as always... My question is regarding black pro mist filters and the like. How would you include one to this kit? Is that possible with the proprietary filter restrictions?
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 жыл бұрын
You wouldn't be able to use existing filters with this kit. That's why I want them to make a diffusion filter for this system.

@@geraldundone thanks for responding dude! Yeah, that's the biggest downside. As a DP, access to pro mist filter use is super important on most projects. It's a shame bc I'd otherwise jump all over this. Perhaps if they made their own version of such a filter.. Keep being awesome man!

@@geraldundone Could you not just screw on the ProMist filter directly to the lens and then screw the PolarPro clamp onto that?

Bocus Focus i think that should work unless the filtersize of the screwon filter is not bigger than the lens diameter and has a thread to put on the adapterring for the mattebox

@@bocusfocus9714 in theory, I suppose so, but one of the selling points of a mattebox is to be able to put on multiple filters so that when you switch lenses, the breakdown is minimal bc the filters are on the box, not the lens.

Can the base kit be used with the canon laowa 12 mm , with the glass that protrudes forward? And also are there any IRNd filters available?

Great video! Ive got a Sony FS5ii. So, is this still a matte box worth considering since I have a variable ND built into my camera and what I really need is something to block light? What might be the benefit of going for the full kit? Appreciate your thoughts on that Gerald. Also, nice save when that camera slid.

Darn it Gerald, I just bought the dp500 last month and I love it apart from the front leaves little room for adjustment as I like to double up on quick release plates also so some of my lenses don't sit centre 🙄

Hey Gerald. Great breakdown brother. I know you have much new stuff to deal with outside of this, BUT you said that you like to use double quick releases. OMG. I have been trying to figure out what QR system I need to do that. Would you mind referring me to the quick release product you use. By all means, make it an affiliate link please! I would really appreciate that help my man. Thanks a ton if you can help a desperate fella from having to get an engineering degree. 😂

When you say the "lightest in its class" does that mean there are others for probably much more money that are significantly lighter?
@geraldundone
@geraldundone 4 жыл бұрын
No, I meant for the size and purpose. Because you could make a smaller 4x4 matte box that has fewer features and which can't accommodate as many lens diameters for lighter, but it's not really comparable. But for any regular 4x5.6", 114mm matte box, this is the lightest, I believe.

9:30 doesn't the color shift comes form the direction of the CPL as installed? Like if you would have changed its direction there is less or no color shift.
