the main issue with releasing ever-increasing performance phones is the app ecosystem ended up trailing behind hardware breakthroughs far too long, causing people to frustrated when all the powerful hardware is for nothing gaming wise, genshin Impact is absolute monster of a game, yet many people still wanted gta-like titles in mobile.
@m.23835 ай бұрын
Genshin is okay (good if you place a single player, garbage if you want decent multiplayer). The problem that is that it's a gacha game, and it requires an internet connection. What people were expecting is games on part of the DS or the PSP, instead we got gambling disguised as a game. Sometimes the games are good (Genshin, Star Rail, from what I hear also punishing grey raven etc). But it's all just gacha shit. There are no good games in the traditional sense. That's why people will laugh at you if you say you're a gamer, but you only play on the phone. Because the quality of games is just garbage, except for ports, emulation and gacha. There's nothing wrong with expecting GTA, as long as people don't also expect GTA v graphics? (though arguably that could also be possible...). The PSP had Voice City Stories. Was a decade ago. IMO the Achilles' heel of gaming smartphones is actually software. Namely the fact that even though hardware started getting really good and you can pair a phone with sth like a Razer Kishi, devs simply don't port real games to Android (with too few exceptions). Hoping the Capcom+Apple collab will turn things around for smartphone gaming. It would be really cool to be able to use one portable device for all your needs including gaming. And that could even justify spending more money on it.

@wisdumcube5 ай бұрын
@@signe_stilett Yeah, a smartphone or tablet being able to run almost natively like an x64-86 gaming computer is the endgame. As soon as smartphones can run basically any modern PC game at good performance, portable PCs handhelds like the Steam Deck will become obsolete (and so will x64-86 gaming laptops, for that matter). Also, a lot of gaming smart phones in the past lacked a good built in cooling system. Phones like the Red Magic 8-9 solves this. I bought a Red Magic 9 Pro mostly for its design (Snowfall) and uninterrupted display without camera notch. I was going to get the S24 Ultra but I saw way too many compromises that don't make sense on a 1500€ phone, namely the lack of aptX codecs in order for Samsung to sell you their galaxy buds, which I'm not into and I'd rather use my IEMs, and it is also unforgivable on such an expensive phone and nobody talks about it. The rather low capacity battery (the Red Magic has a 6500 mAh battery compared to 5000 mAh on the S24U) was also a factor in my decision, although not as bad as the exclusion of the aptX codec. Another nice thing about the Red Magic is passthrough charging which I don't think the common flagship has. For someone who does emulation which is my case, I find this feature quite nice since it allows you to connect the phone directly to a power bank for example, and not run out of battery and you can keep swapping power banks if they run out. Mobile gaming does suck, the native games that is, I find gaming phones the most useful for hard to run emulators such as PS2 and Switch. Yes a flagship such as the S24 Ultra could run it, but it will throttle after a couple of minutes and give you awful 1% lows in fps compared to a better passive cooling system which is usually found on gaming phones. I got this one for 900€ (16/512) instead of the 12/512 S24U which costs 1400-1500€ where I live, and yes while it is still expensive, I believe there's value in these phones still due to the features I mentioned. If cameras and nearly decade long updates are very important to you, then there's value on a flagship for sure, but I think these points are often overlooked when comparing performance and saying gaming phones do not offer anything new since they run on the same SoC. ...And yeah it has the headphone jack, which is a nice addition and something considered premium at this point apparently. My only gripe with this phone is the lack of SD Card slot (which basically no flagship offers at this point, other than the Xperia), and being unrootable for the foreseeable future.
@pillowgood13185 ай бұрын
This. Also if you're into Insta 360 cameras, on phone video editing is extremely resource heavy. Phones with dedicated cooling can handle it without thermal throttling. There was a hot minute where we really thought we could collapse all our computers into one device, so having a device that is made for all purposes could save money, but this is proven to not be the case. Growing up, Dad had work PC's, we had a home PC, family friends had PDA's and we had CD players, eventually iPods, and we had gameboys, eventually PSP's. Each item we had, had a character to it. That thing had a specific use, and it does help a bit with our monkey brains that each is basically a highly advanced tool for a specific, albeit complex, task. Then, after consolidating cellphones, music players, and primary internet interface into the smartphone, you can see the attempt to keep on going. Razer had an add-on for their phone in which you can just insert it into a very thin laptop, literally a keyboard and screen, and use that razer as a laptop. I have friends that basically work through their phone, so the big folding-screen devices do a lot in that space. I do wonder if the logical end of "true all-in-ones" are progressing into being niche rather than an ultimate goal for tech development. like, others' mileage will certainly vary, but i just couldn't play games on my phone. i used my phone for phone things, and swapping between an immersive game from the flitting around of phone use got really cumbersome, and that's just for what's on offer from phones. They really don't compete directly with Steam and Epic because they don't have to. Steam and Epic don't make cellphones that other brands must pay rent to exist on. Apple and Android do. and what would be the point if they did? why do we need everything on one device? if you're a kid, and all you got is one technology to exist on, then sure, it's a bigger problem, but when its your own money, i see the pull of having multiple devices made to do their specific tasks very well more and more appealing.

If devs start utilizing the mobile platform to make legit game ports/versions, we could see a reason for such a thing. Phones already support controllers as well as display to external monitors, which means they’d work perfect for gaming casually. The mobile game scene needs to grow and there’s no doubt it will once the money-hungry companies’ products get snuffed out by actual quality. Imagine being able to play a AAA title, something like Zelda Totk, on your phone instead of having to buy an entire game console/PC! There is simply too much potential for it to not be utilized at some point.

@@jmgonzales7701 The Xperia play came out at a time when phones were only just starting to become mainstream and Sony already had the PSP to sell at the time so it kinda makes sense they didn't push the concept further even though they probably could have. Sony could totally start a mobile gaming revolution right now if they made an effort to get their games on mobile devices along with consoles and PCs, since phones are much more prevalent now, but it would be a pretty big decision on their part for multiple reasons. I think that in order to get a true mobile gaming comeback we need SOME major company to push it, like Meta is doing with VR gaming. Sony could hire game studios specifically for developing mobile versions/ports of their titles (like they probably did with Resident Evil on IPhone) and i'm sure that would cause people to buy and play their games more if they did. However, I think it would be a rock and a hard place for Sony on the hardware side because the phones that people use already are not hyperfocused on performance like the game consoles/handhelds that Sony would want to make, thus forcing Sony to either not create a phone at all or to insert themselves into that part of the market at the same time by creating a very solid phone themselves which would be a whole other can of worms. They COULD also create an android-based handheld made to play the mobile versions of these games better than almost any phone on the market and that could appeal to people, but at that point it's not even phone gaming, it's handheld gaming and the phone hardware would catch up in a few years! It would truly be awesome to see Sony do something like this but i guess only time would tell. Their best option is probably creating a fairly compact handheld that can very comfortably play the "mobile" versions of their game ports at high resolutions and then be like "surprise! You can use your phone to play these games too, they just wont be as good on there compared to the Sony Handheld!" Either that happens, or some REALLY good game comes out on mobile that people are all wanting to play and causes more devs to want to make games on there too, kickstarting quality mobile gaming. I really want to see an indie dev team or even AAA studio create a truly console-level experience for everyone on mobile so something like this can happen.

Gaming phones were always irrelevant. All high end phones have basically the same performance outside of benchmarking tests. You can play high end mobile games just as well for hours between a ROG Phone, an S24 Ultra or an iPhone 15 PM. Zero difference. Well, the iPhones usually overheat and slow down to hell but well, you got the point. We are limited by the SoCs and high end phones all have the same SoC so whatever companies do it translates to 1-2 fps diffence AT BEST. And 99% of mobile games have low graphics on purpose so every phone can play them. The only reason for ultra high performance nowadays on phones is high end emulation or heavy video editing.
@GameOver-nm2us5 ай бұрын
Even then, the "heavy video editing" can be made much better and smoother than any phone out there with a $700 PC (laptop or desktop it doesn't matter). As long as you know what you're looking for, a $400 phone and a $700 PC is all what people need, and for the same price as this pointless phone.
@dhanveercheetoo88684 ай бұрын
Not all gaming phones are irrelevant. Currently the best phones for gaming are Samsung and red magic because of Samsung Dex and red magic console mode. Other phones do not have similar functionalities. But, when ordinary phones will start bringing console modes, then gaming phones would make no sense.

steam deck does all of that better and is able to emulate up to ps3 and xbox360, and you can plug it to a tv with no input lag and use it as a regular console, unlike phones which all have super laggy hdmi-outs, when they even have that feature. plus you can add 4tb of storage to it pretty cheaply, while you'll be struggling with storage on phones. not to mention that phnoes die off way faster when you play games on them a lot - my sisters' galaxy s22 went to hell after less than a year playing that dumb mmorpg that ripped genshin impact off... tower of fantasy i think. moreover, there are dedicated emulation handhelds for that for under $100 bucks that have a very small form factor and can be what you want them to be, plus using them won't drain your phone's battery and you can keep them after you upgrade phones, which you can do way more cheaply because you won't be concerned about useless gaming features. playing emulators on phones is still cope. it's pretty bad.

I think one of the other key factors involved (and you almost touched on it in the video) is just how good smaller dedicated android handhelds have gotten too. One of the biggest arguments against the steam deck was its size for true "portability". These days we have android powered devices like the Retroid pocket 4/4 pro and the Odin family (but for gamer phone comparison probably the Odin 2/2mini). They solve a lot of the middle ground problems pretty well. Like the odin 2/2 mini have a 8 gen 2 processor, a massive battery, way smaller than a steam deck, and a built in controller (I personally feel things like the gamesir are too "wobbly" for comfort, and no longer need to purchase and carry around the controller). considering a top spec odin 2 pro mini is like 400 and a 2 pro max is like 470 (in the US in USD at least), that is a pretty enticing offer for a gamer compared to a four figure "gaming phone". I also like separating my "serious" gaming from my phone so I don't have a call mess up my screen or something, but can't use DND lol.

Fruit Ninja, Jetpack Joyride, Cut the Rope, Tiny Wings, Tap Tap Revenge, Paper Toss, Touch Hockey, Jelly Car, and so much more! INFINITY BLADE! The games at the time were all original IPs that were well made, nice to look at and play, and could run for hours because they didn’t push the phone so hard. Mobile games should be made for the hardware, not the other way around.

Alright, let's dive into the cesspool that is mobile gaming. Most mobile games are a festering pile of garbage, designed to suck every last cent out of your wallet while delivering zero satisfaction. The developers don't give a damn about creating a quality experience; they're too busy cranking out the next clone of a clone, hoping to snag a few suckers with flashy graphics and promises of easy rewards. Ads? Oh, get ready to have your eyeballs assaulted every other minute. You'll spend more time watching those goddamn ads than actually playing the game. And don't get me started on in-app purchases. It's a never-ending barrage of "Buy this! Buy that! Only $99.99 for some worthless digital crap!" They're banking on addiction, manipulating you into thinking you need to spend money to progress. And the gameplay? It's shallower than a puddle after a light drizzle. Repetitive, mind-numbing tasks designed to keep you hooked just enough to keep coming back. There's no depth, no real challenge, just a cycle of tapping and swiping that would bore a toddler. Touch controls? Yeah, because trying to maneuver with a touchscreen is so much fun. Clunky, unresponsive, and infuriating when you’re trying to do anything precise. It's like trying to play a piano with boxing gloves on. Sure, there are a few diamonds in the rough, but finding them is like digging through a landfill. Mobile games, for the most part, are a testament to how low the bar can be set when profit is the only goal.

Mate, I just bought a Red Magic 9 Pro for USD 907.50 (incl tax) with 16gb ram, 512gb storage and a 6500mah battery. So I'm not sure what you're on about. You can't get a comparable Samsung for anywhere near that money.
@ronaldmcdonald60675 ай бұрын
Imagine paying that much for a chinese gaming phone when 99% of the mobile games out there are pure ass... could have bought a decent gaming laptop and play real games instead of your redmagic bullshit lmao! And how about comparing the camera quality of your shitmagic to a Samsung or an iPhone? Phone cameras are important if you want to capture memories, but your phone is just good at being useless!

And also let's talk about how many software updates your phone is getting. I bet it's gonna be outdated in two years 😂
@polarbear17135 ай бұрын
That looks like a good deal and 512 gb is a good size, overall. I have been considering only phones with an SD card slot but I may have to give Red Magic another look. The guy above is right that they only do 2 years of updates, though, and I plan on having it longer than that so that is definetly a con. I am just wondering how much of a con that really is.

16gb of ram and 512gb is useless when you'll only get 2 major updates with it 💀 the only good thing about red magic is the screen the rest of it, kinda mid ngl and mobile gaming doesn't need that much ram to run as minimum as 6gb is considered as flawless... what matters is the processor

The cumulative bugs and lack of software support made my ROG Phone 5 brick itself last month in August. The cheapest 512 GB I could find with major Android updates until 2027 was last year's Z Flip 5, refurbished and half price, so I got it. It performs great on games like Grid Autosport or Zenless Zone Zero, only downside being the screen dimming when the phone heats up. There's not much of a point to a gaming phone anymore.

Mobile gaming is a myth. It died about 8 years ago with all of this garbage in play marker and apple store. If you want to play real games just buy PC or steam deck if you want mobility, or even switch, but not phone

The biggest issues with these phones are the prices. I got a phone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, 16GB RAM, and 1TB of storage just for roughly 500 bucks.

ROG 7 user here. Didn't buy it for the 'gaming' aspect as I only play Star Rail and maybe emulators if I'm feeling it. What sold me for the phone is the massive battery, jack, screen size and refresh rate. Current major flagships always follow apple to let go the audio jack and gotta stick a wide converter just to charge and listen at the same time while I watch KZbin all day with the massive battery.

I bought my first gaming phone during the pandemic because I needed the extra power and screen recording capability. I was satisfied with. Then, I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 FE for its drawing feature. It's not as powerful as my gaming phone but playing on a large screen is a game changer. The phone simply become a camera phone which another big hobby of mine. I am saving up to buy a new phone but my new criteria for it would be a good camera phone, not a gaming phone.

I don't understand it at all. They have so much potential. Imagine a modern sleek Xperia Play. Slide out Gamepad, marketed for emulators out of the box, big battery, cheaper than a flagship phone, stock android and they would sell like hot buns.

No one wants to invest in a business that is worse than the PC/Console market. I'm pretty sure the majority of people that "game" on their phones, wouldn't want to pay 69$ for a new AAA title. Most people are already too used to free stuff or extremely cheap stuff. Also, do you really think people would prefer spending that much money to game on something that has a small display, touch controls, heating problems, etc...
@ModeSieben4 ай бұрын
@@ektasix I mean the market is there. That's why they keep releasing gaming phones like the Asus rog phones for example. Something has to stick else they wouldn't be releasing model after model. I originally intended to say: make a gaming phone and just slap a thin slide out keyboard on it. That would be very neat.
@bristlesthistles4 ай бұрын
@@ektasixThere is absolutely a market for mobile gaming and the potential is there it just gets ruined by greedy trash mobile games. Also phones like the red magic are half the price of the Asus Rog while being arguably better and they have built in cooling fans so they don't overheat. Touch controls are actually better for some games than controllers such as shooter games.

I got a red magic 9 recently because that's the only phone I can find that doesn't have a notch or punch hole except Xperia - which almost doubled the price with their flagship for a better camera while I just never take photos. So I think gaming phones may be the best budget option for someone who wants a powerful device and doesn't take photos. For clarification, the phone I got cost around 500$ less than the flagships with the same specs (except the camera).

Despite the non flagship grade for the camera system, personally I think that the ROG 8 or 8 pro is the best looking phone in its whole lineup because it looks so clean, not too crazy, and the best part is that they're gathering gamers and average users as well into 1 mobile platform, the only issue is the pricing though
