These Pokémon Evil Teams Make No Sense

There are plenty of areas in the Pokémon world that can make you hurt yourself in confusion if you think about it too hard, but the so-called Evil Teams would definitely fall into that category! Not every villainous organization NEEDS a specialty, but when they clearly lay out their goals and desires and then proceed to act in ways counter to those objectives it leaves you scratching your head, wondering how YOU'RE not in charge if the Team is that disjointed...

Team Skull were basically the rebels who went against the traditional beauty and ways of Alola. They didn't like how things were and didn't feel they belonged or felt they were wronged by society. That's how I always interpreted it. Most grunts and Plumeria uses Poison types. Guzma using Bug types to show off the "weakest" type and how scary it can be. I wouldn't look at a name like Team Skull and think Ghost types. I immediately think of edgy kids.

Team Flare in general are quite the overlooked team, and because of it, a lot of information about them is kinda sorta missing, something we don't usually get with the other teams. I guess they REALLY banked on the Z version to polish them all up, huh?

you know its interesting, team rocket uses a lot of poison types, while Giovanni uses a bunch of ground types with poison type in his Nidos, and what beats poison type? that's right ground, so it seems Giovanni did that be design to make sure his grunts stay in line, like his team is perfectly set up to beat up the grunts, seeing as his team is made up of ground, poison, and rock types, which beats up those Zubat, and other grunt mons with ease, his Nidos even have fighting coverage for those normal types, so his team is very much set up to keep the grunts in line as he can beat them with ease. so that's cool

I know that Proton uses a Golbat as his signature Pokémon, but Archer uses a Houndoom, which as you probably know isn’t a poison-type. Petrel also has a Honchkrow, which isn’t a poison-type either.

Most countries sees the name Team Flare to mean solar flares, so they don't inherently have to represent the Fire type to begin with. Also, Flair is also an option since they believe in beauty and extravagance.

Given the direction they're going, it would be fun to see a plot where the "Evil Team" are actually the good guys. As in, not just misunderstood or misguided, but for once legitimately taking the correct course of action and your meddling actually did just make everything worse. In New Pokémon Snap, the ancient civilization used the power of a legendary and their 5 (6?) Totem/Noble Pokémon-like friends to stop a meteorite from destroying the region. If the "evil" team used a plot similar to that, then it would look like they were trying to capture a legendary Pokémon to power some sort of mysterious machine (basically like Galactic, Neo-Plasma, and Flare did), so they'd look like a box standard Evil Team. They'd try and stop you from meddling because, frankly, even if they were an Evil Team stopping them should not be the job of a random kid. But because the plot can't progress until you mess with them, you end up making everything worse, and the thing the "Evil" Team feared would happen begins to happen. ~~~ I don't know how an actual evil team would work anymore, as Neo-Team Plasma went about as far as I think the Pokémon Company is willing to go (frankly, bombing a city is actually a lot farther than I thought they were willing to go, but Ghetsis did it anyway), so any other Evil Team that's basically a terrorist group will always just seem like a step down. We've already done Gangs twice with Team Rocket and Team Skull, and doing it again would just be an unnecessary rehash. While conspiracy was more of Team Flare's thing, a bit more could be done with the concept. For example, actually showing that the Gym Leader's are members instead of merely implying it due to their inaction (not that Clemont willfully not checking on the Power Plant while trying to fix the power outage wasn't a really good bit of subtle detail). Maybe they could have the Gym Leaders actually be the admins. Particularly if the plans of the Evil Team is, like, cloning Pokémon to make them artificially stronger, so that it's a little bit unclear if the admins are actually the gym leaders themselves (and maybe some of them just aren't). That actually could be fun.

we have not had the traditional evil team since Gen 6 and if you played those games, it is very easy to see why. Team Flare might just be the most derivative evil team to ever exist. It is just another evil team that wants to destroy the world only to remake it in their image like Team Aqua, Magma, and Galactic. However, those teams had games that fleshed them out plus being a novel approach in Magma's and Aqua's case. Team Flare just feels like it is going through the motions; having absolutely no qualities that make them stand out from the other evil teams before or after them. It is for this reason why I think it was best for Gamefreak to play around with the evil team formula ever since even if the teams are not as iconic. Because say what you will about recent "evil" teams, they are, at the very least, unique.

Literally every evil team is derived from the real world. Rocket - Yakuza Rocket 2 - The ending of the Yakuza era resulting in plenty of former members of such groups struggling to find meaning separate from their organizations. Aqua and Magma - Literally a real world argument that took place in Japan. Galactic - Was based on cults and the usage of religion as a weapon, seemingly taking inspiration from Aum Shinrikyo, the group responsible for the 1995 sarin gas attack on the 東京メトロ (Toukyou Metro/Tokyo Subway System). Plasma - Was based on the hypocrisy of many animal rights activists who will fight claiming to be in support of a good cause as a way to justify their own horrific actions, with some members supporting the cause and others just being in it for the blanche carte pass to be awful people. Flare - Based on the uber-wealthy and how common it is for rich people to believe that they get to decide who in the world has value and should be allowed to continue living. (Reminder, P5,000,000, or presuming it's comparable to Yen it costs ~$33K USD, to join Team Flare, an investment the average person could not afford.) Skull - Based on how utterly displaced native Hawaiians have become by the overwhelming tourist industry which has been destroying the islands like a plague that pushes the native populations from their homes as their lives, culture, and even survival become secondary to the powers that run the islands. Aether - Based on the corporations built by outsiders that are obsessed with catering to outside forces. In other words, capitalism focused on drinking the marrow from the islands' bones instead of using that wealth and power to genuinely support the local communities and traditions. In Lusamine's case, the outside forces she is obsessed with and accepts aren't mainland (continental US States) investors and corporations but rather the Ultra Beasts which are representative themselves of invasive species which damage the environment. Fitting. Yell - Football hooliganism. Macro Cosmos - Really just Rose. But the basis is a criticism of corporations caring more about their products and the good they think they provide without consideration of the harm they commit to achieve that. For example, Rose is trying to avert an energy crisis Galar will face in 1000 years, so he awakens Eternatus to farm more resources, in turn risking mass devastation across Galar. Compare this to the oil industry which claims we can't switch to green energy because doing so might not be able to support our energy needs so we have no choice but to rely on an energy source that we know is killing our planet... you know, instead of us just being forced to improve our technology and downsizing our energy usage whenever possible. Star - Survivors of bullying and abuse who did not find support from those who are supposed to protect them becoming delinquents who protect one another. This is actually fairly common but notable in Spain and Portugal with an entire subculture in Japan as seen in 暴走族. So, for me, none of these evil teams were actually all that unique because it was obvious they were inspired by the real world.

I think it'd be kinda cool if there was an evil team that had the goal of raising the dead. Sympathetic villain as the boss, only doing all this out of the loneliness and heart-ache of losing their best friend. So they'd mostly use ghost-types. That might sound kinda morbid for a kids' game, but you've seen some of the pokedex entries. This wouldn't be the first time. There'd definitely be some way to make it work.

It would probably go against all fairness but how about evil teams that cheat or use underhanded tactics. One on one battles where a second trainer comes in, locations that have adverse effects (rain rooms that can't be turned off or inverse battles) or illegal items.

Since you went for the pokemon they use (or should be using based on their name sake for the most part), I'd look at the logic stance of each one. Rocket- mafia doing petty crimes, good enough Aqua and Magma- want to create more water or land, OR if playing emerald wanting to save the world from environmental change. It's ok but could've been explored further. Galactic- Cyrus wants to recreate the universe in his image, we don't have much reason as to WHY he's so pissed off at the world, should've been explored further. Plasma- parading around caring about equality of pokemon (though there are a few that do believe it in the ranks including N), while trying to take over Unova. I feel like they should've stuck with the pokemon equality message and forgo the evil team aspect. Flare- Narcassists at best, need an entire rework at this point. Skull- Derpy group of drop out trainers, perfectly fine. Though the Aether Foundation could've been explored more. Team Yell- bunch of fans so they're fine. Team Cosmos were unnecessary, Rose should've just waited for the championship to finish first THEN hit us with the fact that the power issue became calculated to be closer than he wants it and so wants us and Leon to deal with Eternatus. Team Star- a bunch of bullied kids who are being treated like bullies because they stood up for themselves because the school staff wasn't doing their jobs.

- Galactic: If I am not mistaken, there's a random trainer that does provide further explanation for why Cyrus is as he is. However, this comes from a random trainer in the post-game that doesn't even have a unique class. - Plasma: The twist makes sense and is a good one. - Flare: Nah, they are fine as they are. - Team Cosmos: Necessary so Rose could prepare himself to prevent the power crisis. Also, Leon should have post-ponned the Championship for a day because a championship will never have priority over solving a major crisis.

In term of Team Star (Penny) and the Eeveelution, they could have make her team version exclusive. For example, in Scarlet, she could use Espeon and Leafeon (plant under the sunlight). On the other hand, in Violet, she could use Umbreon and Glaceon (cold night) so combining both version, she could have had the full Eeveelution team. It's may not be so hard since even the professor, the paradox from both version are different For some reason, sometimes, I thought that Penny team was "version exclusive" until I found that in both version she has literally the same team and disappoint a bit...

0:13 Ok, where is this map from and why is Pasio there? I can accept The Sevii Islands, Orre, Almia, Fiore & Oblivia as *questionably* canon locations, but, Pasio from the Mobile Game, Masters? How would anyone even MAP this out? Where the heck is Blueberry Academy? I know, obviously in UNOVA, but, where adjacent to Unova? I see Citadark Isle south of Orre, but, NO BB Academy? I will accept that this map maybe outdated and not have BB Academy, however, Pokétopia from Pokémon Battle Revolution is ALSO missing. Orre is consist on both maps (Included), but, Pokétopia is also consist on both (excluded); the other map being Pokéarth. I could believe it's Miror B. bias from the fans though. Sorry, the map REALLY caught my eye.

Those maps aren't canon, anyway. Perhaps it was different earlier in the franchise, but now we've basically accepted that the regions are located roughly where their real world inspirations are (with a few extra areas like the Sevii Islands being where they are relative to the main region in the games in which they appear). As such, the first four regions are relatively placed the same as they are in Japan. Paldea is southwest of Kalos, which is south (across the Galarian Channel?) from an inverted Galar, etc. That leaves just a few spinoff regions that have no definitive placement.

In all fairness to Team Magma, their options for Fire types in Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and even the 3D remakes Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby were limited given that a lot of the unobtainable Pokémon that became available to obtain later on were not in the Hoenn dex apart from a few exceptions that were (Rhyhorn, Golbat, Heracross, Voltorb, etc.)

i’m happy we’re getting another game set in kalos. gen 6 is underwhelming in many ways, but team flare might actually be one of the worst offenders. characters like Bryony and Mable have such fun and unique designs and they are totally wasted. most people would probably not even know their names. they literally have 0 personality and not even unique enough teams. I think that Team Flare using "ugly" Pokemon as opposed to more traditionally beautiful ones is meant to be to juxtapose their goal of creating a more beautiful world, and also to show their true colors. That said, it's actually a lot like how they gave Oleana (of whom was mentioned in this video that Team Flare should take notes from) a Gigantimax Garbodor as her ace: while it does juxtapose the rest of her team, it also hints at her true nature. It could also very well be to show the differing views on what is and isn't beautiful; and in Team Flare's case specifically, it could very well be that their vision of beauty is why they rebelled and formed an evil team to begin with

I was pretty surprised to learn that Team Aqua never used crawdaunt in the games, having been myself introduced to Team Aqua in the anime, where they were first mentioned after a thief gave himself away as a member of the team when he sent out a crawdaunt. Also, it's a bit of a wonder how few ground types Hoenn has in proportion to water types, considering the theming. And it's not even as if it's got a lot of fire types either, only having torkoal and the numel line, apart from the starters. And I guess a few earlier-gen 'mons, but there are also some earlier-gen water types along with the slew of gen 3 water types, so the roster does seem a bit lop-sided, as much as I love gen 3. As for Team Galactic, I'd imagine the fact that, lunar-themed or otherwise, clefairy's looking like the last pokémon any criminal would use led to it being a write-off for Galactic grunt teams. It's hard to feel like the hero of the game if you're beating on a cute li'l fairy. Though I guess that's never stopped Ash from sending James and his team into orbit, even when he had a cute, pink fairy type on his team... Also, solrock, lunatone and the porygon line don't live in Sinnoh, so Team Galactic would have to get quite a bit out of its way to get those, even if I could kind of see them wielding a porygon-Z. Though I guess that would make the Dubious Disc all but explicitly software designed by the villains, which might give players more qualms evolving their porygon2 than the developers wanted.

Hi thats my world map at the start of the video. Ik you say it doesnt make sense but its literally where each region is placed in reference to where npcs say they are to there position like kitakami being between hoenn and sinnoh Almia being south of sinnoh north of kanto fiore being west of almia Kalos being just north west of paldea etc etc each npc has lines referencing where these locations are. The map is layed out based on that and not based on where there real world locations are because it wouldnt make sense based on where the actual characters and npcs say they are. and it isnt just randomly thrown together ether like other world maps. carefully crafted for a huge world map project of remaking the entire world in minecraft. each game me and a team played through to make sure this was as accurate as it gets cross referencing and checking with bulbapedia and the such. There is some minor creative liberties taken this is so that the mmo experience me and my team are crafting is fun to play through. oblivia and hoenn are connected for example as we plan for oblivia to be a expansion after hoenn. i hope this helps clear up some confusion as iv had a lot of people bring up my world map being inaccurate recently.

Honestly, I like Team Rocket, but their grunt team roster is the most disappointing in the series to me. How is your stated mission “to steal rare & powerful Pokémon to sell for profit” if you only use the same handful of early game evolution lines to back yourselves up? Even with all of the work Let’s Go did to improve team variety across the board, the Voltorb & Ghastly lines were the only new additions. And they don’t use ANY Johto Pokémon at all. They had multiple opportunities to make the grunt teams unique in some way; they can all still have the standard Ratatta & Zubat, that’s fine, but I want to also see stuff like Poliwhirl, Tangela, Fearow, Wigglytuff, Growlithe, etc…, SOMETHING as potential proof of a recent mark. They’ve even got the Game Corner rewards at their disposal; your telling me no Rocket Grunt is willing to bite the bullet at the casino to get a Pokémon their own organization is readily supplying to the public?

The problem with Team Flare is that they had no reason to actually interact with the player until the climax. Most of the plans you stop are them stealing things they could have easily just bought, and your final interaction with them before the climax is them harassing an Abomasnow for no reason. Team Flare, ideally, should have shown up everywhere without ever actually fighting you, gating your progress like an authority figure rather than an evil team. Not only would this have made way more sense for them as a whole, as they basically are an authority figure in Kalos, but it also would have substantially increased the number of optional areas in Kalos, something X and Y severely lacked.

In defense of Team Flare: I always interpreted them as GameFreaks take on the NSDAP (the historical German Nazi party), which lines almost perfectly with Lysandres themes. Also, Hitler was the perfect opposite of the aric type he propagated as the only "real" human. So yeah, ugly Pokemon make sense. And don't forget that you have to pay to enter Team Flare - it's your wallet and nothing else they're interested in (also an uncanny similarity).

There were originally three towns in Ula'Ula, there is now only one. Pokémon Village was destroyed by Tapu Bulu for building a supermarket in the wrong spot (which was ironically the only thing it didn't destroy). Po Town was ransacked by Team Skull and turned into their main base. We also only see two confirmed residents of Po Town from before the attack, which has disturbing implications about what Team Skull did to said former residents. ~~~ Team Star wasn't evil because they were never meant to be. While we still don't know where the pyramid scheme we saw at the beginning of the game came from (as none of the squad leaders seem to even know it was occurring, and to even try would break Team Star's rules), the Team overall was essentially just protesting the school and trying to provide a safe space that they believe the school failed to give them. ~~~ I'm not going to try to defend Team Yell. I actually like Sword and Shield, and even like its plot, but Team Yell added so little to the story that they could be removed entirely and it would still work basically as is.

I disagree with Team Magma needing more ground pokemon and here is why: Close to the only ground types really availabe in Hoenn are sand based. Team Magmar wants to create fertile land and sand is the opposite of that. The Numel line makes sense because it is a literal volcano-pomemon line. Slugma would have made sense because it is a magmar pokemon.

@@emperorcubone Nincada loses the ground type upon evolution. Not using a pokemon above its base form is weird, but Team Magmar having a flying/bug or a ghost/bug pokmoon would be even weirder. Given how they want to create room for more life, a pokemon associated with death would be especially weird. Barboach just has the issue of being a water type. Even if you want to argue to use it as a "link" between the teams, a team wanting to get rid of water having a water type feels really off. I also don't see the confusion. Team Magmar is as much of a ground-type team as Rocket is a poison type team. They are not. Margma is a word associated with Rock and Fire (Through heat) mostly as Magma is molten rock. If anything Groudon being a ground type is weird in every way. Groudon is a ground type that does not cause volcanic erruptions, but bright sunlight, for which it does not even get a stat boost on the strengthen attacks for.

Team Rocket would have always been best fitted with the Dark type for the stronger more individual members, but being that Kanto had none, I understand why it was the poison type instead that was more common; but since they actually used stollen pokémon they should have an over abundance of normal, water and flying types (I guess they do have Rattatas, which I believe is the most common trainer 'mon in Gen 1...). The connection with Giovanni makes me wish Ariana and Archer had Nidoqueen and Nidoking as their ace Pokémon. It would have been dope. Gen 3 always baffled me on how little ground and fire types there actually were. You'd think being right next to a volcano would introduce more variety than 3 new fire type families. I guess the early recruits could have traded Poochyena for Nincada, but then everyone would be confused as to why they'd be dropped in later grunts. Gen 3 just has so many characters that needed aces that it is an impossible exercise to make anything feel fresh. I agree about Gen 4. A psychic theme would have been amazing. And then when you pull the curtains and give Cyrus a Dark type as an ace, that would have been chef's kiss. I don't mind Houndoom, Honchkrow and Weavile on his team, but I always though Drapion should have been his ace. Not much to say about Team Plasma; but Flare? If the Flare comes from ostentation and to be bright rather than just fire, they could have taken advantage of the newly introduced fairy type and major in that too. Grandbull, Clefable, Wigglytuff and Azumarill would all have been great grunt fodder. Gen 7 and 8 don't particularly bother me with the exception of Oleanna having a Garbodor as an ace. They could have introduced another poison type this generation... Gen 9, all the aces with the exception of Erin and Annihilape bother me. Giacomo should have a juiced up Lokix. Kingambit is Elite 4/Champion material. The humming/buzzing even fits the dj theme. Mela isn't *bad* with Armarouge, but I think she should at least have Scovillain in her team if not her ace. Riddle me this: Why doesn't Atticus, the poison type artist, not have a single Grafaiai? Ortega is in a tough spot. Without introducing a new Pokémon specially for him, he really is left with only Daschbun, as Tinkaton is left for Poppy. Klefki is there and he could have had a Mawille... but truth is, he needed some kind of Steel/Fairy Gremling that dismantles machinery as a partner, or at least have a form of Revavroom that is Steel/Fairy instead of Steel/Poison; like a "Clean" form or something. Penny is my top disappointment perhaps. Terastal was the peak new thing to introduce a new Eeveelution. You just needed to say that only a Dragon-Tera Eevee is the only Eevee that can become a Drakeon or something and leave it at that for now. Penny is already rocking the royal blue and red hair color that is already dragon color-schemed (See Lance, Druddigon, Hammerlocke Stadium, Rising Badge, etc). That would feel so much less redundant.
