The Pokemon Card Market has seen some pretty massive growth over the past few months. Alternate Art Pokemon Cards and Sealed Pokemon Booster Boxes are currently sitting at record highs and it seems almost every day, a new Pokemon Card or Pokemon Sealed Product goes through a buyout. These price hikes have caused quite a few headaches for Pokemon Card Collectors as they struggle to finish off Master Sets with fear of getting priced out continuing to be an issue.
Rainbow Rare Pokemon Cards have also seen some crazy growth numbers over the past few months. Popular Sword and Shield sets such as Evolving Skies, Lost Origin, and even Astral Radiance have been impacted greatly by these buyouts and many popular Pokemon Cards which also have Alternate Arts, are seeing insane gains as the Market continues to confuse itself. With Pokemon no longer making Rainbow Rare Pokemon Cards, is it possible that we will see more Pokemon Cards impacted in the near future? Let's talk about it!

That Gyarados Vmax rainbow from E.S. caught my eye on my TCGPlayer app in my list of cards, I pulled it on 10-20-2023 and it was a $15 card, and saw it higher in my list (sorted high to low in value) and was like where did you come from lol. One of my favorite rainbows I have.

Interesting comments in the middle of the video about the recent price surge, and dualing possibilities of manipulation vs. demand (or both playing a role). It would be really interesting to know what's going on. One question, to Danny or anyone else: do we *really* know, for sure, that the sales and pricing on TCG Player are verified? I was wondering about that. I mean, it's easy enough to list sales. I'd just like to think it's all accurate.

I always wondered about that too. Any Tcgplayer seller can make a second account and "buy" their own card for an outrageous price and just relist it a few days later for that price again because they manipulated the market and have now imposed a new value on the card. I think the solution is after a sale, there needs to be an official USPS tracking number on the order and then it's a verified sale. I think this whole thing is smoke and mirrors.

As far as rainbow rare cards go, I guess I consider myself lucky that I picked up a mint copy of that Sylveon one for $20! Crazy to see how it doubled in value! But I doubt it'll stay that high for long, but not selling any of my rainbow Eeveeloutions anytime soon!

While everyone’s buying I’m that one guy who’s constantly selling and moving cards because I’ve had fun these last few years collecting and trading but after having to sell all my high ends cards last year with a family crisis it’s been hard to stay caught up so I chose to sell what I have left and start over slowly overtime buying what I like not what is a hot topic. I’ve followed fomo before and it’s always the same story and same ending!

A lot of the detail gets lost in the rainbow.

It’s a lazy recoloring of existing art that cheapens the look of the original illustration. Take the rainbow rares from Cosmic Eclipse for example, you have the special art versions of Zekrom/Reshiram or Solgaleo/Lunala or the Vileplume with Erika and then you throw out all the colors and just apply a “rainbow” filter that does nothing to complement the artwork. Or like what Danny said, full art trainers had backgrounds illustrated by the artist, all to be completely removed and just applied a rudimentary rainbow filter over it that doesn’t add to the actual subject.

I collect rainbow rares whenever I can, have a topload binder specifically for them. I'll be putting it in a fireproof lockbox soon. I love the way they look and its a good investment since. . .You know, they prob won't print this rarity ever again.

Its amazing how many people love these now that they are up in price. Weird. The rainbows in sun and moon were ok but the rainbows in swsh are garbage. If you have them in a binder it all looks the same. But thats the story of pokemon. Cards go up in price and then all of a sudden its "ive always loved these" sorry pokemon getting rid of rainbows was a good call.
