Well this was an eventful first light session. I decided to hit the local river with the medium/heavy pike setup and target some aggressive river pike and I wasn't disappointed. The pike were really fired up and the takes were explosive! I had plenty of action and even had a really nice fish take the lure just before heading home. Hope you Enjoy!

I actually fished here a week before you uploaded this video - spotted some lovely Barbel and Chub near a deep hole under a tree on the near side of the river. Got em feeding and all of a sudden a big ol' Pike turned up and ruined my swim, started chasing around the Chub. The best thing about these swims is how easy it is to see the action unfold right in front of you.

If you are concerned about injuring the fish and to make it so much easier to get out of the net. Try crushing or grinding down the barbs on the hooks. Sometimes when a fish thrashes around in the net the last thing you want to do is spend time to untangle it because the other hooks are snared.

Its always daunting first few times. If you have a matt, put fish down and get on knees one knee either side of the pike. Feels a bit more like you are in control helps with confidence. Then put pike on its back, slide finger up the gill flap until you feel a bit of chin u can grab , pull towards you and mouth will drop open wide so you can get forceps right in. If you are chinning and unhooking while lifted, gently sqeeze its body between your knees, not ideal but if you are going to unhook that way its better than a fish flying out of your hands and landing headfirst on the bank!

I know you like the fishing for Pike and fat Perch . Have you ever settled down for a session for using a swim feeder, ha ha I hear you swearing. I'm only adding this because me and a friend fishing the Tees on free pegs a match further up. My set up cheap Boyes Warbird Feeder rod, open cage feeder 30g, using Sensas 300 Classic Match Bream ground bait, smells delicious, white maggot size 14 whisker barbed hook. No sooner it settled on bottom a 2.8lb Bream then another and another within similar weight, completely bonkers. I stopped counting after 8 of em and my landing net covered in slime. I'd probably have won that match if I was in it, the main thing I noted, they fought like stink, each and every one of em. Normally a few heavy headshakes and dives then like reeling in a soaked tea towel, not these, all the way in. Love the vids you put up. Keep em coming.

Why do you use such thick braid if I may ask?
@Sonikks

With pike fishing, you mostly use treble hooks. It's important to use a strong braid especially if you're dead baiting because it you get snagged, you want to make sure your hooks bend out before your line snaps otherwise you risk leaving a deadbait with two trebles on it that will get picked up a pike.

@r0binho386
@r0binho386 2 жыл бұрын
Often the difficulty with pike is they slam their mouths shut once you've caught them. Grabbing them under the gill plate means, as well as having control over them, you can ensure you can get the mouth open. Anything other than small jack pike, chinning them is the best way for sure. Also keeps your fingers safe from the teeth!
@jakereich
@jakereich 2 жыл бұрын
I caught my first big pike the other day, and held it under the gill plate for the first time. Luckily I'd watched a bunch of videos so knew what to do. Just be careful to take your time and not accidentally touch the gill rakers. If you get the fish on the bank with a net, then hold it on it's back between your legs, you'll be able to carefully take a look at the jaw and gills and figure out what's going on. Immediately reaching down and grabbing the fish by the gills is probably for when you have a bit more experience.

Hey, next summer, talk Berkley into flying you to Alaska and I'll put you onto some salmon and halibut! I'll host you no problem. We'll have a blast! I live on the Kenai peninsula, little off grid farm, half dozen kids, and I'm permanently disabled so, no job to get in the way 😉... bring the fam, I'll feed and house ya, y'all just get here 😀. Kings are a maybe, been a lot of closures, but we literally get millions of sockeye! Last week the kenai river had 137,000 enter the river in 1 day! 5-12 lbs of rocket fuel on the end of you rod in a Glacier fed river with bears just off the trail 😀. Early to mid July is the best, late July through mid August can be really good for coho salmon, fall colors, 7-20lb slabs and an occasional 1-4lb Dolly Varden in spawn colors! epic! So, dead serious mate... think about it, trip of a lifetime, I'll cover everything but the flight, could even hook you up with the Outdoor boys, and Alaska boys channels for a collaboration.

My understanding is that it is to do with oxygen levels. Standing or slow moving water like canals and lakes can heat up and have low oxygen levels and the fish can suffer. Rivers will tend to be cooler and highly oxygenated regardless of outdoor temperatures.

Nothing when comparing to Malaysian giant Snakehead on the lake. Malaysian soldiers in training need to lob a grenade before crossing a river that connected to the lake. These alone is big as a baseball. Divers cutting trees 100' deep in the lake were afraid when the fish attack them. In a Snakehead infested lake, it is known to bite the hands of fisherman washing their hands !!! It's a good fighting fish, much more stronger than Muskie. So far 20 kg is the captured one. There are much more bigger in size deep in 100' lake claim by underwater tree harvesters !!! They were never landed.
