You might find this interesting: As a carpenter and then a technical photographer I can walk in any room and immediately spot if a door, a wall, or window is off-plumb. However, when ever I taped a piece of seamless paper to a wall to photograph paintings against, if it wasn't plumb - it would always throw me off. In any room I can tell which paintings are cockeyed, set my tripod up within inches of dead center on a canvas, even tilt the camera very close to the angle a painting on a wire is hanging at. But those two big lines at the sides of the paper? Always throws me off. Also when I was in China crossing a small rickety wooden bridge, very dangerous place, with missing boards I froze. What I figured out was with my transition bifocals the boards were out of focus and my brain said, "Not enough good information to risk a next step." - I sort of forced myself to keep moving. I quickly figured out the problem as well as the solution - drop my chin even more to move the planks into the midrange part of my glasses so they'd be in focus. When I first got bifocal lenses it was like I was walking around in a 6-8" depression in the ground. They also threw off my perception of vertical straight lines. That lasted less than a day. When my prescription changed I never had either of these happen again (and my astigmatism has changed over the years.) It's like my brain learned not only to adjust but how to adjust the next time. I really like your channel. I've studied visual phenomenon my whole life. I even took a class with Rudolph Arnheim (Art & Visual Perception) in the 1970s. I think Vermeer may be the only artist, before the modern era at least, to paint the 'same color' illusion (your birds). I've looked at a lot of paintings, the old masters when they painted portraits 'from the subject' are always left eye/right eye optically different ( I think it's slightly anamorphic.) Vermeer, like photographs is completely flat -supporting the optical device argument. Someone like Rubens, will always have an optical effect in his portraits, but two figures or a genre painting and it goes flat. Rubens is left handed, Rembrandt right, Bacon right, Lucien Freud left.... this seems to work really well until you get to John Singer Sergeant, he seems to be the most left eye'd left handed painter of them all -- except he was right handed. He did work from the (his) right side of the canvas which is what left handed painters do. (so they can reach the canvas with the brush in their left hand). Leonardo famous for being ambidextrous, his paintings are left handed. I learned a bit of this in the 1970s, but haven't been able to find any reference to it anywhere online. And I think the source that started me looking at paintings this way was incorrect. It said to look at a Rembrandt left eyed from 5 feet away. That's too far and it's the wrong eye. Hope this has been interesting.

If I remember that the Giant in a room is caused by the fact that your brain refuses to acknowledge that such a thing as a trapezoidal room actually exists, so it "fixes" the perspective for you. The picture one works with clever painting and camera positioning so the frame obscures the paint lines. If you'll notice, you can see his legs under the bottom - however, one aspect of magicians is drawing your attention - you _see_ his legs, but you don't actually pay attention to it, as your attention is on thr painting. As for the super small miniatures, you ever heard of the "Keyhole Effect?" Things viewed through a very small opening such as a keyhole, tend to look odd. Shrunken down, so to speak.
