So to be an overexplaining killjoy, most of the rules focus on controlling panic responses to minimize injuries and get EVERYONE out safely. A slow, single file line means that all the classrooms will have room in the halls to evacuate. No talking means that the adults giving directions and orders will not be drowned out by crying, screaming, and conversation. No running means no stampedes and nobody gets crushed underfoot. Everyone has to stay together to make sure nobody gets left behind. If people spend time grabbing their (replaceable) belongings, the spend that much MORE time preventing their CLASSMATES from escaping the building. Have you EVER tried to burn fresh grass? Living plants (especially ground cover that gets watered daily) are INCREDIBLY fire-resistant, actually. And open air is GREAT for avoiding smoke. You know what's NOT heat-proof? Insulation foam; releases toxic chemical fumes. Glass; shatters when overheated. Blacktops; melt through your shoes, and/or cause serious burns if you trip while panicking. Concrete, exposed to high temperatures, will crack and/or EXPLODE. If you're not accounted for, it means you're still in the building and people will search for you. You HAVE to stay until emergency services have given the clear or the professionals won't be able to focus on your job because they're busy looking for you in a locker, bathroom, or closet somewhere when you're just sitting with your friends or something. Panic causes disorder. Disorder makes EVERYTHING more difficult to control in dangerous situations. Fire drills work. Follow procedure or else make the problem worse than it already is
@MikaTheSwordGuy2 ай бұрын
Counter point: Realistically, most of the students will rush towards safety regardless of the procedures due the high stress of the situation.

As much as I'm sure these help, I guarantee nobody is going to follow them regardless
@acespades23872 ай бұрын
I mean, NO, the drills DEFINITELY work. That's what they're FOR. If it wasn't proven through study that it worked, then they wouldn't be put into nationwide practice to begin with. Organizations like the Texas School Safety Center and the Northwest Fire District have websites that confirm what I've said. If anything, fire drills can work TOO well in that the desensitization from fire drills can lead a person to act like a fire isn't a big deal and will cause them to be more lax about fire escape protocols. You guys have clearly never been in a burning school before and it shows. I have. I was the one who pulled the damn alarm.

@CrystalFox252 ай бұрын
All of those rules have a reason. They want you to leave things because a) it wastes time and fire can catch very quickly, blocking potential exits, b) people have been ended because they went back in a flaming building to retrieve items and c) if you are still in the building when firefighters arrive, you are in their way and they cant begin fighting the fire. You can’t talk in the hall because of the potential that new instructions have to be given with little to no notice in a smokey hallway with little oxygen, like if a firefighter says you need to go somewhere else OR if the teacher realizes there is a danger and needs everyone to listen and turn around. You can’t run because that could start a trampling event which has ended people in real fires throughout history. You stand in the grass but at what is considered a safe distance away so you could see the fire IF it was coming, but also so you aren’t in the way of firefighters. This also allows you to take attendance and get help sooner. if you had to travel a larger distance, it would take more time for you to realize someone was left behind. Attendance is called because if there is someone still trapped, the principal can inform firefighters who then know to prioritize looking for the person. This is why teachers tell you to be quiet as well. wasted time could mean that the person who is missing could be ended by the time help arrives. They also ask that you continue to be quiet on the field in case firefighters give new instructions (like if the building has a potential to explode, they will ask you to move all of the students back farther to a safer distance). All of the rules have come from our knowledge of past fires and have been developed to help reduce panic and save as many lives as possible. We do the practice so if a real event were to happen, the hope would be that habit would override panic.

Fire Drill Perverts Schools have turned fire drill wisdom into a quirky game of telephone, where each generation of staff morphs the rules into something barely recognizable. It's like they've seen fire drills on TV, given by actors in a drama-free zone, and thought, "Yeah, let's do that but without really understanding why." Hence, we've got ourselves a bunch of fire drill enthusiasts... or, let's be honest, fire drill perverts. So, what does the rule remix sound like? "Form a single-file line and take it easy to the exit" has morphed from "Let's not start a stampede while escaping a fire." “Leave behind all your worldly possessions” should be "Forget your stuff, unless grabbing it is faster than a TikTok video." Silence is golden, apparently, because "No talking" comes from not wanting to drown out life-saving instructions. "No running" is the grown-up way of saying "Hurry, but don't trip over your own feet." Watching the school potentially turn into a marshmallow roast? That's actually "Let's all stay together so we know no one's turned into a real-life Where's Waldo." And standing on grass? It's not for the ambiance; it's to keep everyone in a safe spot, not starting a grass fire. The roll call post-adventure? It's less about attendance and more about "Please let me keep my job because I didn't lose a kid today." And waiting around instead of hitting the road? That's just to make sure the building's either ready for a grand re-entrance or a no-go zone, ensuring no one's sneaking back in for a forgotten sandwich.

Oh this is soo true. The stupid obsession of teachers to really not take anything with you. Yeaaah, that split second it takes to grab my backpack sure will kill me. And I remember this one time during a fire drill in primary school when a teacher lectured me, why I brought my jacket. Well, because it was cold and I just ripped it off the hook while running past it. I mean, sure, it's good to teach kids that life is more important than personal belongings, but this was ridiculous.

Even worse is taking the time to put your stuff back even if you already had it with you. I once got in trouble for already wearing my jacket, like nah bro they can't be bothered to heat the school it's 50°F in there, I was already wearing it.
@Kuwayukuei2 ай бұрын
It's even worse because outside of school I was always taught in fires, "take what you can, but don't waste time grabbing stuff you don't need." So yeah, grab outer wear in reach and important stuff like cell phones or documents if you can, but don't put your life at risk for them if they're closer to the fire.
@s.j.warlock49012 ай бұрын
During an actual fire, backpacks and jackets become death traps since they're highly flammable (paper + plastic + oxygen), have various strands that can get entangled anywhere, take up much more space (and a stampede is 100% going to happen), and they're literally straped on you. In a panicking crowd many bags and jackets will be left on the floor, becoming tripping hazards. A phone or a water bottle is totally ok to take with you, but a backpack can be a one way ticket to hell during a fire. Follow the directions kids, I didn't had any idea of how much they did made sense until I was the one in the fire.

One of my ELA teachers in middle school, who was an absolute blessing to have, said if there was ever a shooter or fire too close, that she would open the window and tell us all to jump out, it was a big fall so she always said "if you know how to fall, good. If you don't... A broken shoulders better than 3rd degree burns or a bullet.". Once we wouldve jumped out the window, she said in that scenario, "I know where I live and I'm guessing y'all know where you live too, cause just know I'm going home. So y'all should so the same" 😭😭😭
@AngelOkie2 ай бұрын
We always said in early highschool, that we'll pick up the shortest one in class and use them to break the window. It was a running joke, that most played along with. We also said if there was a shooter, the two tallest ones will stand in a cut out near the door and while we throw everything at them, the two tall kids will ambush them. Can't take down a 6ft + tall 250+ weight boys.
@pokemon051003 ай бұрын
They do this for a couple reasons. Forcing everybody to go single file and calmly ensures that people don't get stuck in a choke point around exit doors. There have been some pretty tragic deaths caused by people getting jammed into a door and preventing the people behind them from getting through. You're supposed to be quiet so that you can hear any firefighters who might be on the scene. They might give instructions on how to get out if the regular exit is blocked, and it is essential that you listen to them. You aren't supposed to go back for personal belonging because the fire might block your exit or you might be moving towards the fire. I've never seen a school say you can't bring belongings that are already on your person. The teacher needs you lined up outside so that they can call your names and make sure everybody is out. If one of you aren't there they need to be able to tell the firefighters so that they can save you. I never had to stand on the grass, but we had to stand out of the way of the building in case it collapsed or in case a firetruck needed to get by. These are all tried and true safety steps that do indeed save lives. The solution you intuit will get you and all your friends killed. It's why you have drills in the first place.
@SpaceHardcore883 ай бұрын
Yeah, but if it's already right next to me and the teacher says "leave it behind", I am not leaving it behind. It's already next to me and would barely take any time to grab. And with modern day prices, it's likely to expensive to replace. If it's right next to me, it's only going to take up to 2 seconds to grab (if it's heavy then it's reasonable to leave it behind, but who has something heavy enough to slow you down in a classroom?) But all the other points you made actually made sense. If something is across the school, then yeah, I'm not risking my life for it. I'd only grab it if it's right next to me or close enough to me where it wouldn't take much time to grab it.

I hate to break it to you, but lining up, not taking time to grab your things, walking instead of running, staying in a designated area, and doing a head count all make way more sense than gathering all your things and running for the hills. If you gather all your stuff, you may not have time to escape. If everyone is running for random exits, people will trip and be trampled in the panic, if everyone is talking, teachers won't be able to hear if there's something unusual happening (like a child calling for help). If there is not designated area, people could get too close to the fire and be injured. If everyone leaves and no one does a headcount, the teachers won't be able to tell the firefighters if anyone is missing and how many. If firefighters don't know how many people are missing (if any) they will either leave someone to burn to death without attempting a rescue or risk their own lives searching an empty building for stragglers. Fire drills are well thought out and proven to be effective. All the things I've listed actually happen when people don't follow the plan.

@@shireads2954 When I was a kid there was actually an attempted arson at my elementary school and a lot of the kids did grab their bags. For most of us the two second difference in getting out of the building was worth saving the hundreds of dollars in school supplies, and we still had to make an orderly line and walk out to the field, so it really didn't waste any time in the process of leaving. It's one thing if you're gathering all your supplies from a desk or locker, but if your backpack is literally on the floor next to you.. idk it seems stupid NOT to take it in a real fire.
