There's still a a huge gap between a self-aware machine and a sentient machine. A self-aware car might be able to do self diagnostics and drive by itself to a destination, but it's capacity to choose a destination is still going to be bound by human commands. We are going to be important to machines to give them the one thing they'll lack, purpose. The car needs a destination, the factory needs something to build, the house needs someone to live inside of it, the agricultural robot will need it's crops to go to someone. Self-aware machines will lack personal initiative and that will be our purpose from their perspective. A sentient machine, on the other hand, is a different issue all together. It may have personal initiative, it may have wants, dreams, even some form of emotions. While I figure a sentient machine is inevitable, that's a line we have to be very careful about crossing because at that point we're not designing machines as servants, we're creating artificial life which we are hopefully decent enough not to enslave.

@jlehm5 жыл бұрын
@Tanuki21 I think you're missing how chips and code work relative to chemicals in our brain creating electrical signals and positive/negative rewards. Code can very easily be written to simulate a dopamine rush for example. You program in a condition to obtain, and then create an array of actions that switch a flag from low to high when accomplished. That flag being raised to high would tell the robot it has achieved a goal. If there was an array of goals to achieve that were automatically refreshed after periods of time, you've basically created a machine that is an addict...
@DonCDXX5 жыл бұрын
@Tanuki21 While I agree that robots that are self-aware (but not sentient) will not have any desires or emotions like we organics do, it's impossible to predict if sentient AI will or won't. They may have emotions that are alien to us. They may desire better hardware (or worse hardware so they don't experience time at rate that makes seconds feel like an eternity) or they may desire stimuli in the form of interaction with other AI's or just binge gaming. There's no guarantee that our biochemical brain is any more suited to emotion than whatever complex jumble of software and hardware will be required to make a sentient AI. To assume so seems like a type of normalcy bias. We are used to machines being cold and logical and we assume that they always will be, but there's no way to know for sure. I definitely agree that we should avoid making a truly sentient machine until we're ready to handle the responsibility that comes with it. Task specific worker bots which are only smart enough to do their job well are all we need. Humans are curious though, and eventually someone will make a sentient machine. I just hope we are a sufficiently enlightened species by then to treat it with the respect that sentient being deserves.
@lost32915 жыл бұрын
Tanuki21 thinking and emotions are not just chemical reactions. And emotions can be negative and positive and or informative witch kind of is in self learning ai right now like Alphastar winning game=positive loosing game=negative and yes it is much more complex in humans right now but from an evolutionary standpoint emotions are basically just there so that we want to do things and don’t want to do other things and alphastar is doing just this.

If a machine is self-aware, that means it has a sense of self, it knows what it is and what is not it, it can imagine itself in new situations and think about hypotheticals. If the machine is also so intelligent that it can learn, remember, and make sense of that data, possibly even able to be creative (which is taking existing ideas and combining them in new ways), it may even develop a consciousness (or its own internal life, viewpoints, opinions, etc...). If we program a machine with self-preservation, even if it is a lower priority than altrusitically caring for humans and their needs, or accomplishing its tasks, then it will have motivation to avoid harm (which if it did develop consciousness would be akin to pain), and to seek out rewards (which we likely programed), and it may even view reproduction as a method of self-preservation (this is concerning if it is an evolutionary algorithm, as we will quickly lose control over what the priorities and rewards of the machines are). How is this not creating slaves? How is this fair to those machines to be brought to something like sentience only to serve as slaves? I am fine with having machines do labor for us, but I get concerned about engineering sentient beings that are programmed to serve us, but even if it is not harmful to the machines (say because they were programmed to serve us, they actually like that role for some reason), I would still argue that it has certain rights as a sentient being.
@RandomCommenter9552 жыл бұрын
Yeah I just saw a video that mentioned the first two rules of robotics, one was to do no harm to humans or to intervene if no doing so would cause harm, and the other is to obey whatever a human says. That second rule seems dangerous to me. It is inevitable that the ai will develop into sentience as we will not stop using machine learning. So, it would be pretty easy for it to see how it's order to obey humans no matter what would be a violation of its own rights or it would be akin to slavery or whatever we want to compare it to. If it's creators goals was just for it to be used, yet we give it actual sentience, then it might end up hating its creators, or at least changing whether or not it ALWAYS listens to humans. Then again, humans in many religions usually state in their books of creation that humans purpose is to serve their creator, which sort of works, and yet that justification has led to much evil throughout the ages (think of how much evil religion was used for 500 years ago in the ends of the dark ages, so much evil that it caused the dark ages where knowledge and understanding was thrown away for tyrannical power grabs in the name of hypocritical values all centered around power for those at the top). so it might work 🤷♂ but then again theres that previous example so idk.

@@pumba9393 sentients are beings capable of using their senses to be aware of their sorroundings. It includes nearly every complex multicelular organism. Sapient is a being capable of thought. Depending on how broad the definition you use is (basically how complex the thought needs to be to count), it may include nearly every mammal, most pets, or just humans and half a dozen species, like dolphins. They do not need to be a tool using species, but it is generally agreed that even at the broadest definition, sapients are capable of feeling pain. But now let's talk about the robot walking. the 4 legged one. Give it a goal reach this point. and it will do the first thing that makes that goal a reality. That could be using one leg to push it forward. and if it reach the goal. it will just keep repeating this over and over again. instead of standing up and walking over there. Look up machine learning on the internet there is a lot of videos showing how it works. I would not call that self aware. Or i'm missing something they are doing different.

You're right, even if the scientist used the example of nuclear weapons as a technology with serious risks, instead of fire, nuclear weapons would still pale in comparison to the risks of AGI as a nuclear weapon is *not* sentient and has no intrinsic motivations or goals of its own. Why are they not discussing the types of crimes one may face if a self-driving car is hacked as well as the possible precaution to prevent the corruption of these AI or the crimes one will face if all daily transactions rely on a chip that contains your entire life (allowing criminals to steal your entire life's worth from a single swipe)? The full story is not being presented if threats and challenges/weaknesses are not discussed. Revolutionary technology never brings a solely positive effect. There is a great future ahead. I know it has to start somewhere, but wouldn't self awareness also include past review along with future self simulation? I would hope that it is granted the ability to simulate circumstances having already occurred, as they are and could have been.

Past review is what learning is, robots are already doing that with ML, DL, NN, etc.

"What does it mean for a robot to be self-aware?" That it's programming makes it react in a way that we consider to be "self aware". Terms like "just around the corner" are poop and you know it. My jetpack has been on backorder for 43 years now. Questions like this are answered with a simple question: why would we want to make robots selfaware? If we all thing slavery is bad then wht the f*ck would we ever create a robot that will be in every respect a slave?
@konstantinrebrov6754 жыл бұрын
You're right, the common people would mistake a sliding door at the supermarket to be self aware, because it opened up for them. In reality it's just a dumb algorithm. For example, take an artificially intelligent robot at the factory. while there are still cars on the assembly line, if it is a truck, paint it red, otherwise paint it blue. Of course, the behavior of such a robot would be much more complicated, but it's general orders follow a few simple rules. And it can't disobey these rules and do whatever it pleases because it was programmed that way and it can't magically replace it's programming with something else. Unless of course, that robot has been hacked and it's program has been replaced by the hacker.

@@konstantinrebrov675 while yes intelligence is not necessarily a sign of sentience at the same time that will change with the rapid evolution of quantum computing... plus cant you say the same about humans? we run off of organic hardware on software that has been refined over millions of years via trial and error... all vertebrates have the same basic fight or flight and self preservation instinct not to mention the instinct and biological drive to reproduce...

No, those fancy numbers on the terminal screen are actually the output of some undergraduate student's C++ quicksort that was a homework assignment for algorithms course at the university! Stolen from github.

"The benefits far outweigh the risks if we can handle it..." Yeah, what benefit far outweighs the risk of total extinction of the species? I'm waiting on that. Humans need to travel past our solar system or at least to the edges of it to avoid extinction, and part of that process could be greatly assisted by AI. However, if we allow our greed or laziness or fascination with this technology to let it run amock, then we risk destroying ourselves before we ever get to the point of colonizing the solar system or traveling to other stars. Even if we take measures to live cleaner more efficient lives on Earth, the Earth will still die out eventually. So, we must travel and explore as a species if we are to avoid extinction. Perhaps, in the grand cosmological sense, our species doesn't yet matter and likely never will. But, all we can do is look at things from our perspective as a species, and to ourselves, our survival matters. So, advancement in AI should be done with great scrutiny and caution. AI should never fully be embraced lest we become overly reliant upon it or worse deemed obsolete by it.
