These ps1 games show signs of their era, but they still have more of that "comic book feel" in which they are bonkers and don't take itself too seriously. I never liked the "but the web swinging is not realistic" criticism some people have of these old games though.

My first experience with spider man was the ps1 version the one with electro as the main villain I remember dying when falling off the rooftops wishing there could be a way to go below the most recent would have blow kid me’s brain off I made sure to finish every little thing in the game I opted not to get a ps5 due to upgrading my pc instead I hope it does get a pc release just like the first Seeing the vent part unlocked a memory I actually played this part at my godmothers house her son had a ps1 and the first spider man game I remember hearing that part because she was calling me to eat 🤯

Was recovering from surgery when Batman Arkham series stared my dad had the demo on our first PlayStation 3 back in 2009 it was pretty cool my oldest bro got the game of the year addition a few years later when Arkham City dropped he loved that game our dad played the hell out of the first Spiderman game from 2018 was one of his favorites glad people are still giving super hero video games a fair chance 😊😊

I love the Spider-Man games, I played quite few, interestingly vicarious visions had their solid run *while I never played enter electro and the game boy color version of Spider-Man 2000, I do have mysterio's menace on gba, pretty awesome game and it was basically the ps1 games except in 2D, then ultimate Spider-Man on gba was also good, they put a lot of focus on venom, but spidey is still good to use, then the okay Spider-Man 3 on gba, late era gba release, despite vicarious visions making Spider-Man 3 on ds* I would consider both ps1 games to be an extension of the 1994 animated series, *and I guess to a lesser extent, the first movie game where it played like the ps1 games, except given the movie treatment* thankfully I appreciate there's more good Spider-Man games than bad ones *battle for new York gba 😢😢*

It's a movie tie in game and it has one job that it succeeds at. It advertises and adapts the movie whille having a love for the comics. When's the last time The Controller was in a Marvel game? Did you play with the silly mode on? The two games had a silly mode where dialogue became sillier and there would be more superhero cameos. I remember in the first game when silly mode is active one level had Ghost Rider driving up one of the skyscrapers.

12:00 it could also be that the devs weren’t allowed to use Green Goblin because the first Rami film was in the works, there is a precedent for this kind of stuff. In the 90s cartoon Spider-Man (commonly refereed to by fans as Spider-Man: The Animated Series), the writers were initially forbidden from using Sandman or Electro because James Cameron planned to use them in a Spider-Man film he was working on. Though by the time the last season of the cartoon was in the works it was clear Cameron’s film wasn’t happening, so the writers managed managed to sneak Electro in before the show ended.

The first good superhero game that I can be recommended for as close to a good experience as possible would be Marvel's Ultimate Alliance. It is overall a good experience although still faces problems from it age as it came out in 2006.

The first ultimate alliance main problems are the glitches and the performance issues. Even the almighty brand new next gen versions (x360 and ps3) at the time still chug a lot and have insane glitches. Other than that none of the games of that franchise were bad (x-men legends 1 kinda aged badly though because most of super heroes feel the same. Legends 2 is pretty cool too but has less combos)

I remember the first one of these. Had issues with the level you chase Venom in a race. After the mid point cut scene, Parker would fall to his death. I tried spamming the web swings and zip lines, but I think it may have been a bug. Managed to beat every other level.

If it's the pc version, you could try limiting fps in video card drivers, if the game runs too fast, cutscenes glitch. Had the same problem there as well as after the police chase when Spidy had to swing to the construction crane in the cutscene

I have the PC version of the first game, & I could only progress so far back in the day without the unlock all levels cheat because if your computer runs the game at a high frame rate, a lot of the scripted scenes break & prevent progression. Also, I don't know about the PS1 version, but the PC version of the first game has the same targeting system as the second game.

2001 Spiderman is the where it all began. I played it for the first time a few weeks ago and it's obvious how many games took ideas from it. There's several stealth segments that remind me of stealth in arkham games. The combat aswell when facing multiples enemies is awesome to bounce between them. His abilities are all amazing...... Sussy baka looking aah title, but intriguing, especially when it comes to Spider-Man 2 and Ultimate Spider-Man. These 2 are the gold standard, for Ultimate it's more so the aesthetics, the presentation, the art style, the voice acting, the characters, the story, the bosses, while everything else just goes to 2 lol. I enjoyed Black Cat as a character in 2 though, she was epic, they should've went harder with her...damn if this game released today. I'd make the combat as brutal and acrobatic as it seemed and felt in Ultimate and also stealing that web climbing mechanic while you're web swinging to add more depth to the infinitely increasing skill ceiling of Spider-Man 2 and it'd be perfect. Currently combat may feel outdated in 2, but at least you can dodge hits unlike Ultimate lol (jumping does not count, fk off) and most importantly, what i did most of my time playing this game as a kid....i could grab street thugs...hold them for an infinite amount of time...even while wall climbing...and piledriver them off a fkin skyscraper...i should not have such power in my hands. Also the music in both is great, i just remember more tunes from 2 than Ultimate and not, i'm not only talking about the pizza theme lol. Anyway time to watch the vid now...man i just wish Insomniac didn't have move assist in their game, a generic OST, braindead web slinging and that broken aah wall climbing. The braindead web slinging may sound like a good thing... :) it's insulting i have to continue explaining to you why that is the case but i'll do it anyway for the brain rots among us. Beast was in Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, but the game felt much harder to play especially as a kid compared to the first PS1/Dreamcast/N64 Spider-Man game. I also loved the Kraven easter egg in Enter Electro is great, you can find his secret lair somewhere. The What If? modes that were available for the PS1 games were insanely cool, and offered more cameos I loved seeing as a kid. Also when you train in the first Spider-Man game there’s more cameos of other villains and even superhero pals of Spidey’s, these cardboard cutouts in the game in the training section appears in Across The Spider-Verse when the Spider People chase Miles at the HQ in the film! I love when these games get brought up, because I thoroughly enjoyed these games for YEARS as a kid growing up. I was like 4-5 years-d and I remember first beating the first game and it was so rewarding.

That’s a great point you made at the end there about comic book/superhero games. Sometimes you get one that’s legit really good but you don’t see one that really expresses how much they loved the aource material. There’s some awesome Marvel arcade beat ‘em ups that came out in the late 80s and early 90s but because of their nature of having to be very short games people can play at an arcade, it was naturally hard to show a lot of love for the properties. The closest I can think of is the Captain America and the Avengers arcade beat ‘em up where sometimes non-playable heroes like Quicksilver and Wonder Man show up to help out in some way in-between or during levels.

I would add that the PS1 games + the PS2 Spider-Man 2 laid the foundation for future Spider-Man games. You got combat in both games, but PS2 Spider-Man 2 is were the web swinging comes from. I mean the PS2 Spider-Man 1 is like a reskin of PS1 Spider-Man, they both share the same swinging mechanic and combat.

Enter Electro probably suffered from the fact that Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movie was in development around the time of the second game's production. Goblin was already being used for the movie so they were probably told he couldn't appear, and due to the Marvel Comics Bankruptcy and Sony and Fox obtaining the rights to Spider-Man and the X-Men away from Marvel, they most likely didn't have access to other Marvel heroes for the sequel
