É óbvio que ele não iria conseguir impor o estilo de jogo dele na seleção por não ter tempo para treinar isso, já que o sistema dele só funciona com treinos constantes para aprimorar a técnica, posicionamento e entrosamento. Mas o presidente asno da CBF (sabendo disso! Porque eu me recuso a pensar que ele possa ser tão burro em não saber que o estilo do Diniz não funciona a curto prazo!), resolveu ter a ideia brilhante de contratar o Diniz (e foda-se o fluminense, né?) pra ser o técnico (ou melhor, um tapa-buraco de gringo). O Diniz deve continuar com seu estilo, nem que perca todos os jogos. Afinal de contas, ele foi contratado por ter esse diferencial. Se fosse pra jogar o feijão com arroz básico, tinha trocentas opções. Quem sabe assim aquele idiota à frente da CBF seja mandado embora também por incompetência de gestão. The point about Ganso for me is why I love this playing philosophy so much. Modern tactics while having many positives have in my opinion restricted the game and taken away from what makes this sport so beautiful with tactics almost hardwired into the player's minds teams feel like they're automated you just don't see those individual moments of magic that make the sport special. The position that Ganso plays the "number 10" or a free roaming attacking playmaker basically doesn't exist anymore in Europe which is extremely sad because those were the players that made me and many others fall in love with the game.

12:05 It may sound strange, but it is not weird! I'm from Argentina (just next to our brothers/rivals Brazil) for the sudamerican player, this is CORE football at it's simpliest. Most of us (me included) learn how to play in the streets, in our gardens or in any public space. There is no coach there so as kids, we just learn the game by enjoying it For most argentinean players it's harder to play in european "fixed" tactics that in more flexible tactics

This is why most people in Argentina will agree this is the reason why we won the WC or why we always have at least 1 player in the very top. When the script wont work, only talented, gifted and ballsy players will have the guts to say "f*ck it, i'm stepping in" Argentina doing great in extra time in the WC matches, Di Maria playing a final like its nothing, Mbappé scoring a hat trick in the same final... If you train the ability to have fun and find a way to score by any means posible, you do not need to stick to the script even if it is not working!

And we all learn to play football in closer spaces, like "futsal" courts, yards, etc. We learn to play using short passes, tricks and movement all time. We don't like to wait the ball to come, we're all trying to be in conditions to receive pass and have the ball control. South Americans love the game, but first we worship the ball.

Hey Corey, i really enjoy your channel, im Argentinian and like our neighbors Brazil and Uruguay our football is more tecnical than tactical oriented, here in the young academies there is no teaching about tactical instructions, just polishing technique, and when the child grow to its teens then starts the tactical teachings. Thats why we have in southamerica the most tecnically gifted players in the world history like Maradona, Pele, Garrincha, Messi, Riquelme, Rivaldo, Ronaldo Nazario, Recoba and Francescoli (both uruguayan), Ronaldinho, Neymar, Aimar, Di María, Ganso, Ramón Díaz, and the list goes on. One of the best examples that i can give you is the Boca Js of the 2000's, that team beat Real Madrid and one of the best AC Milan in history at the Clubs world cup final. Riquelme was the "Ganso" of that team, one of the most tecnically gifted players i've ever seen, he was also a mentor of Messi and teached him how to free kicks. Maradona (often referred as the best footballer in history with Pele and Messi) played in Boca Js and Riquelme inherited his N 10 but Riquelme is the N° 1 idol of Boca Js history even over Maradona. The Number 10 player is always sacred to us, and is a honor to wear the number, bc that means that you are not only the playmaker and the most talented player, but also the master of the orchestra.

My local club Malmö FF from Sweden is also playing this way and it has been pretty succesful. The biggest issue with this philosophy in my opinion is that it takes time to build these relationships between players. So for an example we bought around 5 players this summer and sold a few, then you need to build new relations with the new players, and then the same thing in the next transfer window. One big positive aspect is that it allows younger players to really shine and not just be part of a system meaning they are more attractive on the transfermarket which also develop the club. One example is Hugo Larsson who moved to Frankfurt for the biggest fee of all time from a Swedish club, he went for more money than Zlatan and Isak!

Exactly! I follow Fluminense football, and it took about a year for the coach to polish the team and make the most of it. Recently, Fluminense won the Copa Libertadores (equivalent to the Champions League in South America) using players who last year played in the second division of a regional championship in Brazil.

What I liked from that game was that Fluminense played with a combination of “relationism” while also being cynical, which is something Malmö also need to improve. I can recommend you watch Malmö-Elfsborg this Sunday. It’s the last game of the season between 1st and 2nd, whoever wins the game wins the title!

My dad and Gran parents still say the Brazil 1970 team of that era was the greatest team they ever saw, they said they were like Aliens playing the game doing things with instinct and joy.

I always felt this identity loss happened to the Mexican National team as well. Everyone says the new generations are not as talented but the Mexican player is just different. Our players can't compete in strength or speed usually, but they are relentless and never run out of gas as well as having very decent technique. Having foreign coaches trying to implement the European/Argentinian style of football was never going to work. There are of course a lot of other issues that need to be fixed, but getting back to the identity and style of play that suits the players best is crucial.

Think Luke did a relationism vid. My son's HS team is interesting because they teach positional but kids are kids and the better players skew relationism due to skill differences. None will play D 1 college soccer but a rising tide lifts all ships and from my youth where US programs were all day runners and effort players, there is a bit of flair being developed and kudos to my son's coach who wants players to express themselves while also teaching strong fundamentals in any system

Additionally the US soccer fed actually gives the dev programs and youth programs marching orders regarding how to coach them. In Europe players don't play actual games until later in youth than in our country because skill on the ball is paramount and then you fold that in to a game later on. Very interesting when he discussed Dunga and how he tried to kill the Brazilian flair to a certain degree. And how that ties in culturally. You can see it in this game and others that are global like baseball (Japanese players being super sound vs Dominicans who trend power etc) where culture influences trends in sport. Using that free space is actually part of the tactics. As well as having numeric advantage to do quick passes and break the defense in the spaces near the ball. Diniz has been doing this for quite some time though. Even in smaller teams with not so good players he was able to pull this off.

When you wonder about the background of these players, If you ever visit "Río de Janeiro", at any beach, you will find yourself amazed watching groups of brazilians from all ages and genders passing a ball without letting it touch the sand. I'm from Argentina, we proudly say "Maradona is the best player in history", "Messi is the GOAT" and we do have a lot of great players, still, we will never have the natural skill Brazilians have to play "pases". I would love for Dinitz to be succesfull with Brazil national team, cause that would mean the return of "Jogo Bonito" I remember from the 90's (hopefully not as succesfull as Argentina nowadays, as we are historic rivals).

I say this as a Brazilian: I love the fact that this style of game is growing and it gives me hope. Brazilian football, in my view, in these last cups, sinned for one simple fact: it tried to imitate European football and its "Positionist" style of play. THIS DOESN'T MATCH BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL AND I RISK EVEN TO SAY THAT WITH SOUTH AMERICAN FOOTBALL IN GENERAL. If you take the 1970 Brazilian team, considered by many to be the best that ever existed, they played in this style, with players surrounding the field, not always maintaining a fixed position. When I say that the positionist style doesn't suit Brazilian football, it's because we here learned as children to play football on the street or on small sports courts, with children playing without tactics and without a fixed position.

Regards to the long pass/short pass debate. It's much easier and safe to keep the ball on the ground with short passes. It's a shame you are injured (hope you will recover fully soon) so you could try atleast some kickabout with Luke and realize how stupidly hard is to place a accurate correctly weighted pass furhter than five yards away and how is it even harder to recieve that pass without just bouncing of you like a wall aka the concept of soft feet :D atleast even for some long time amateur footballers it still was an issue too :D

There is a problem with Diniz tactics and the National Team. The best brazilian players GO to Europe nowadays. Sometimes VERY young. And they are trained more and more in the European model. So if they are called to the national team and the tactics are totally different, it will be VERY difficult for them to adapt, considering it's just a couple of matches at a time with Diniz and then back for a few months of European football before the next Seleção games.

Fluminense just won the Copa Libertadores da América, the South America's Champions League, playing this way. Beautiful match against Boca Juniors from Agentina. Diniz structure has some hidden objectives: the obvious one, to open space; to break the opposition’s D (positional players get lost on what to do when the left wing starts overloading the right wing and the left back is suddenly an offensive midfielder); and the most important that most analysts don't get: your players runs less and the adversary runs A LOT (chasing the ball). Opposing team gets to the second half dead tired, they can't put up with the tempo the full 90 and the spaces suddenly are wide open. Cheers!

Your video is very good and, in a way, inspiring. I am a (avid) supporter of Fluminense Football Club - it is the club at the root of Brazilian football, with strong ties to the British; founded in 1902; it's worth getting to know its history up close - and I live next to the club's headquarters, located in the Laranjeiras neighborhood, bordering the Guanabara Palace (former residence of Princess Isabel) - currently the headquarters of the State Government of Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro was the federal capital until the mid-20th century (just to provide context). Hopefully, what we are witnessing, through this magical institution (without exaggeration), is the rebirth of the Brazilian way of playing football. The famous "beautiful game" was forged in the irreverence of the Brazilian way of being. And this includes Preguinho, Heleno de Freitas, Leônidas, Waldo, Didi, Garrincha, Pelé, Rivelino, Zico, and many other stars of this culturally significant sport. In 2022 and 2023, we saw Fluminense perform, several times, plays like the one in the 4th (magical) goal against Italy in the 1970 World Cup final. The resemblance of Clodoaldo to André is almost unbelievable, I must say. The pass that Pelé gives to Carlos Alberto could be Ganso to Samuel Xavier. And of course, I'm not comparing one player to another. But the way of playing? The same. I can make other references with the 1982 team as well. So, yes, we have seen it before over the last century, but it was lost in the turn of the millennium. Probably (that's a guess..) because the teams that were winning the World Cups were more pragmatic and structured than Brazil, which had seen its "beautiful game" fail even when it was shining. If you are interested, maybe it's worth to watch: Fluminense vs Flamengo (2nd leg of the Campeonato Carioca final) Fluminense vs River Plate (1st leg) Fluminense vs Boca Juniors (1st half and 1st half of extra time) Offensively, it is a very interesting team. But without the ball at their feet, I wish they could be more incisive in their marking. Saudações Tricolores :)

Relationism is playing to the strengths of futsal and street football that most Brazilian players learn to play in. So it's not that crazy for a good Brazilian player to play in that method. It's another thing for a Brazilian player that's been playing for years in Europe, with very rigid positionism

Well, last saturday, november 4th, Fluminense have just won the Copa Libertadores, the south american continental cup, kind of equivalent to the uefa champions league. Thank god for Diniz! LOL edit: Diniz has, since the update of the video by the football purist, been appointed as the interim manager of the brazilian national team.

As a Fluminense fan I advise you to watch a whole game so you can see this structure working with all the benefits and the eventual flaws. I guarantee you that it's sometimes unsettling as you see the other side of the pitch wide open, but at the end of the day it works. Like you said, it's not for every team and even more for every player. But for those who get used to it and feel comfortable on it, is a joy. Every player touches the ball several times on a single attack, without showboating, playing strictly to the system. The setbacks are on the counter-strikes, with so many people surrounding one area of the field, a stolen ball crossed over to he other side creates problems. That's how most of the goals against Fluminense are born. Sometimes they get the ball back with that pressure, whenever they don't, our defenders better start running..

As a Fluminense fan, I was very happy and grateful for the title, I was at Maracanã and the emotion was indescribable. Diniz revived our love of going to the stadium and watching good offensive football being played, sometimes it seems crazy, but it's a lot of fun to see Fluminense playing with so much quality in the middle of such a congested sector. Such a creative football!!

Greetings from Brazil Corey. The Diniz approach is kind of how we play as kids. All the boys want the ball and run all over the pitch, as we do when playing futsal. This is definetelly a brazilian way of do things, with some thick tactics but a lot of improvise.

When you talked about players being raised playing a system and then having to deal with another completely different, guess what? Thats what happens with EVERY south american player. We all grow up playing this "Relationism" play and our stars had to adapt to a positional play to be considered """"successful"""" in global football (aka European). What Diniz is doing is cutting off the "need" to play a positional play and go back to our creative/technical playstyle that isnt centered on who's stronger/faster but on individualism

Relationism is probably the best and the most natural way of playing football - that is - if you have a really good players 🙂. They can make it unbeatable, because it's the most fluid, dynamic and adjustable playing philosophy capable of reacting to any style of play. However, less skilled and less-technical players, unless they know each other extremely well, will completely butcher this style and will lose against any tactically sound and more organized team, even if it consists of completely untalented players.

Suddenly, this content popped to me and I can agree Diniz has a totally different tactics. The concern is will he going have free permission to choose the player that best suits his idea or must have to fit a player name in his 11 main squad? If he's really free to choose, why still haven't took Ganso in there? Well, without the free permission, Diniz has to setup on what these 11 main squad can offer and not force Ingenuity in brainless players.
